EA slowly taking Madden out of the Madden franchise

A Gamertell writer has noticed that the legendary John Madden seems to be slowly slipping out of the videogame franchise that bears his name, speculating that it may be an intentional move by EA. From the article:

"Madden's role has diminished within the game in recent years with new features and load screens focusing more on individual players than on Madden and his expertise. For Madden 09, for example, John Madden's role is reduced even more with color commentary going to Chris Collinsworth across all consoles (in the past, Madden had only been removed in that capacity on next generation consoles)."

why not? They've taken everything else that was good about old school Madden out of the game, so they might as well remove the Hall of Fame coach as well.

The best days of Madden are long gone. The best days were when Summerall and Madden shared the mic, and gameplay was king. The Madden and Al Micheals duo wasn't bad either, but the intro of Tony Bruno marked the beginning of the end. Now, listening to Chris Collinsworth is like listening to a used car salesman talk up a Ferrari. So long, John.

I was never a fan of madden since he was over-the-top fanboy over certain players, it was embarrassing...and my god take that clicker away from him. CC would seem to be more balanced but I can’t say as I have spent that much time listening to him. Pat Summerall was king.

At this point I like the college announcers better and the college game more so I don’t even think CC could get me to buy another Madden....but who knows.

it kills me that people are complaning about how bad madden is an how much better 2k was but did you see the SALES of the 2K franchise. even at a cheaper price the game cant seem to sell a 1\4 of what madden sales. I think the ones that complain the most are the ones that really dont understand football. I like the game ALOT, they were never great but always better than everything else. at least on the PS2 an 360,PS3. because on the PS1 sonys game was king, NFL GAMEDAY, but for some reason when it went to the PS2 that game turned to crap!! so until theres something that can compete with madden EXPECT MORE of the same which at bad to begin with!!

9.1 - Brand loyalty...
Its the same thing that Sony uses to sell Playstations. NFL2k series has produced on a whole better football games than Madden but with marginal improvements. That was until Nfl2k5, that game smashed Madden every way easy and hands down. But when you tell this to someone thats been buying Madden every year since the early 90's they seem like they dont even care 2k even made it cheaper just because they new if someone serious about playing the best football experience, played it they would like it better than Madden. That is the year EA bought exclusive rights to the NFL because they new they couldnt compete with the talent of 2K so they had to basically buy the market.

one of those guys that everyone talks about that buys Madden but it changed with madden 07 on ps3 it was a total let down and I will never play Madden looks like EA lost a customer.

11 - It's a good move from EA
They've made some missteps over the years but it looks like they're making a genuine attempt to freshen up the franchise for a global *cough* European *cough*, as opposed to American, market.

Getting rid of Madden all but in name is a bold step but in my opinion a great one. Besides his loathsome commentary it serves as a sign that EA is attempting a rebirth of the franchise. The reinvention of Head Coach from the ground up, a playback tutorial type mode, online leagues and putting an internationally known (and retired) player on the cover all seem to be taking the image of Madden to a broader arena of gamers.

Am I convinced it will work? Not yet. But at least EA appears to be attempting to right its past wrongs, instead of just sitting on its Madden laurels.

I've never been a fan of EA or passball but as long as they have the name "Madden" in the title it will sell and besides out of the one madden game I've played it wasn't that bad and I didn't even know the rules!

Loved him as a player, but his know-it-all superiority complex has got to go. I only buy one Madden game per generation so I can play FB if I want - I'll be sticking with my '06 - it's good enough for me...
