Codemasters to give Gran Turismo 5 a run for its money

"It's all about the race." That is the mantra over at Codemasters right now. The studio has a title in the works that may give Gran Turismo 5: Prologue a little competition in the racing genre. The title is being developed for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC, and Nintendo DS. Yes, even the DS is getting some love here, quite impressive.

Yea right a port is going to beat a game that is developed specifically for the PS3? Multiplatform alone says this game is all hype.

Anyway, they wont even compete with Prologue (only a "demo" remember), i bet prologue (only on PS3) outsell's this on all platforms combined.

wow trying to compete with gt5 and its gonna be multiplatform
gt5 its suppose to be 1080p correct
so if this so called codemasters its gonna be multiplatform it would most likely be running 720p max
correct me if im wrong but this is my opinion

7.1 - I wonder how many people have 1080p televisions
Ive just bought a hd tv and went with a 32" 720p/1080i screen for my bedroom. This was down to the fact that after a bit of researching i found that the difference in clarity between 1080p/1080i cannot even be seen on a screen unless its bigger than 50" and you sit closer than 1.5 times the screen size.

All hd broadcasting is in 720p and all 1080p games are upscaled from their native resoloution.Basically gt prologue being in 1080p is not really a selling factor unless youv'e spent alot of money on a 50" 1080p monster. Its just another selling gimic to get people to either spend more money or trade their old tv in for a 1080p model.

Ever wondered why you cant get 1080p 32" screens? Even the 37"/40" screens with 1080p discernible screen resolution diff is neglible but people still buy them.

you are right and should spread the word that if you dont buy a 50" or above dont bother with 1080 anything. 720p is the way to go if you have under 50". Higher resolution TV's are made for the giants, thats why they came out.

If you bought a 32" 1080 tv you got screwed. Just remember size of the screen and viewing distance is huge when selecting a TV.

7.3 - 1080 p
"If your screen is not over 50" and you got 1080 p, you got screwed."

I'm not so sure about that...

I use my 40 inch screen as a computer monitor as well, and a 1900 X 1080 resolution is a lot easier to stumble upon, and looks noticeably better, than anything with only 720 horizontal lines of resolution.

8 - This could really be a contender.
Codemasters have had tons of exp with the toca, colin mcrae games and with the new direction there taking there gonna appeal to the mass market.

Imagine the damage model from Colin mcrae along with the lighting model. The driving model of toca in plush enviroments from the usa, japan and race circuits from around the world. Add to the mix drifting and car customisation outside/in.

Ive seen the cgi trailer for this and i have to say it got me excited about this game and if they fully realise their ambition with this one we could have a fight on our hands for the best racer crown.

The Need for Speed series, which pretty much sucks. I'd love to try out this title, even though DIRT was a little underwhelming.

*remembers GT5's 1080p , realistic lighting , smooth frame rate and high-poly cars *

*remembers how Polyphony have insider tech knowledge from Sony*

*remembers GT's powerful franchise*

well from what i've seen of Grid, it looks impressive and a title i most likely will be picking up, BUT it still doesn't hold a candle to GT5

for one thing it will only have 45 cars, while GT5 will have over 600

16 - DOES IT REALLY HAVE TO GIVE GT5 A RUN FOR ITS MONEY?
If it sells over a million copies and gets great reviews from fans and critics, isn't that enough? No first-time game could ever hope to compete with a next-gen Gran Turismo YEARS in the making; that's not even a fair comparison.

But with PGR in limbo and Forza Motorsport the only other significant challenger to GT, the racing arena is ripe for some new blood. So, that in mind, good luck to Codemasters and GRID (GRiD?). If the game is excellent, it will at least serve to keep Forza and PGR and Gran Turismo devs on their toes....

16.1 - well
you can't compare a racing sim like forza to an arcade racer like gt.

forza and toca will forever be the best racing sim games ever made.

16.2 - LOL!!! did that xbox fankid call GT an arcade racer?... I guess LMAO!!!
Forza might as well be compared to PGR because againt's GT thats all it is an arcade racer. i'd say CodeMasters better get back to the drawing board. they were claiming the same thing when motorstorm came out. LOL!!!

as for Grid, They have a better chace at giving forza a run for their Money, because up to now Forza aint cant even match PGR4's Looks or Fun Factor

18 - It's really not that bad
I can see none of you have actually played this game, I tested this out at play.com live and i currently have prologue japanese version. The version at play.com was for 360 and i must say i was actually surprised, Graphics were forza 2 standard at least and the car physics while a bit arcady held up quite well. I found racing was much more fun than need for speed prostreet and much better looking. Comparing to prologue maybe a bit big headed at least the developers are aiming high.

18.1 - @Murkster
What did the enviroments look like? does it have a good sense of speed? is it 60hz? Which track and what car were you using in the demo?

I ask these questions because i am deciding wheter to buy a ps3 solely for gt prologue this month. But if this game looks really promising i might not get one yet untill ive seen both these games in action.

18.2 - how arcadey
have they made it is it as arcadey as dirt was, does it grip too much or is it more silly controlled sliding I really liked the handling in race driver 2 is the damage model still there

thanks for the incite btw

Are they even competing? I think they are two very different driving games.

19.1 -
yeah they kind of are

they are both simulations

although by the looks of it, GT5 will be much more realistic and feature-rich

it's pretty tight in the graphics department though- but since GT5 uses advanced techniques like raytracing it will probably end up looking better

this game looks damn good nonetheless

22 - Good to see some competition for GT5
Codemasters is a great company. They are on more platforms that GT, so they should be getting decent sales. Time will tell if it is as good as GT. Go for it Codemasters... always good to have more than one good franchise in a genre.

Codemaster's your competing in dangerous territory, not only that, while it might fair okay on Xbox 360, how over shadowed do you think your product will be seriously? This is whack, nothing can stand up to the GT series, nothing.

27 - i like Codemasters,
but are you saying that this game is going to have, what, 700 vehicles, each with true to life handling and physics, on real world tracks?

is this game going to push the Cell Processor like no other game before it, utilizing the unique architecture, making sure the PPE, SPEs, and RSX are working *TOGETHER like they are supposed to?

like i said, i like Codemasters, but when *ANYBODY starts making claims that they will be competing with another series, red flags immediately go up. i've been nothing but disappointed in the results each time (hell, i'm still smarting from when Peter Molyneux said the original Fable was going to be the "best RPG ever made," many moons ago, and i fell for it and bought an X Box *JUST for Fable. i happen to enjoy Fable, and am looking forward to the sequel, but lets just say that back then, i learned a hard lesson about hype).

of course, this sounds more to me like, once again, it's the *MEDIA that are hyping this game as some sort of Gran Turismo competition, and not Codemasters. it's a lot like the media dubbing the original Killzone a "Halo killer." look it up, Guerrilla Games *NEVER said that Killzone would be the "Halo killer," but OPM and PSM magazine started that hype train (i had the issues, actually), and it did nothing but hurt the game in the end.

the media needs to tone down the hyperbole, and just report the facts.

and the facts are, Codemasters is working on taking the GRID series in a new direction, and the results are looking impressive. end of story.
