Holocaust Survivor Criticizes WWII Game

The game "Imagination is the Only Escape" recently sparked controversy, becasue a holocaust survivor condemned the game. Jack Kagan says that he is mad at the concept of the game.

The game is about a boy in east France after the Germans invaded France, and the only way to escape the horror is through fantasy.

He said:

"The Holocaust is serious for all humanity and I don't think anyone should make this kind of game. I'm very upset by it," Mr Kagan said.

The game is being developed by 21-year-old Briton Luc Bernard, whose mother is Jewish. It is being produced by Alten8, a private company licensed to develop games for Nintendo UK.

Mr Bernard, who now lives in France, told the JC that the game was intended to educate people about the Holocaust.

"This is to educate children. I don't find war to be a game and this will not contain any violence. Lots of other war games just have a lot of shooting and don't really show what war is, but that's not what I'm doing," he said."

But Mr Kagan said: "This is not educational. Holocaust education should not be done through games of this nature. People can read and watch things about the Holocaust, they do not need these kinds of games."

dude, a little out of line. people are entitled their own opinions and to disagree, but your obvious trolling is disgusting. You despise this man for not understanding games, yet you tell him to "go get gassed" and completely justify his opinion. This man is concerned that a traumatic life altering event that effected millions of innocent people will be portrayed in an immature manner and presented to an audience that will think its just fun an games. With your comments, and the thousands of other like-minded cretins like you that run rampant on the internet, i can't say i blame him at all. This stigma this man subscribes to that games are nothing but empty brain candy must be changed. Games can be artful, emotionally engaging, thought provoking, and profound; comments such as yours only serve to knock gaming's image back to the dark ages, and make yourself look like an idiot. i award you no points and may god have mercy on your soul

WOW i was going to come in here guns blazing about how stupid this is and then i saw XBREAK3FIXME's commment. You sir are very sad and pathetic. Good to know you have the balls to make jokes about the mass muder of millions like that under the veil of anonymity. I would love to see you say some crap like that in a public place. Someone needs to beat some respect into you because obviously your sad excuses for parents didn’t do a very good job of raising you.

While being a holocaust survivor I'm sure he's been through hell, and witnessed acts we couldn't even dream of picturing.

In this situation, however. Should people really be educated of the holocaust simply by reading and watching all the gore and blood spillage. Or be educated that war isn't the answer to everything?

The premise of the game seems to be that its teaching the latter, and Jack would prefer the former.

To determine the game as "not educational." is a little quick off the mark. The real question would be how well is it teaching its education?

This argument is far too open. Games get released that touch on far more sensitive subjects. I'd say allow it, let the public decide whether its educational or not.

"Or be educated that war isn't the answer to everything?" I am not saying that i don’t agree with you or that you are not right but you do realize that war was the answer to ending the holocaust right? Some things can only be resolved with war, it’s sad but true. Life is about shades of gray and EVERYTHING has a time and place, even war and killing. War has always existed and always will as long as people are born with different perceptions and ideas of how the world should work. Peace is simply nothing more than one group of people submitting to the will and ideals of another group of people for mutual benefit. Sooner or later the group that is submitting will grow tired of submitting and then boom we have a war. Unless you can make everyone agree on everything all the time war will never go away.

To sum it all up, some "games" just shouldnt be made if there's really no real winner. I'm sure no one wants to see a 9/11 or Hurricane Katrina game, but some people are just crazy enough to make them. Even if this game is made, no one would want to play it...especially for the DS.

Good points too. Yeah I did know it was the only solution to the holocaust. But you hit the nail on the head with war being the answer to "some" things. Todays children/teens need to be educated that it's not the only answer.

I for one, however, do not agree wholehearedly with either party. I do not feel that this education should be done by taking a warbound situation and making light of it. But it seems thats the premise of this guys game, I can't fault his views on that, nobody can, what is a true way to teach?

My point was, games have been released on equally if not more so, sensitive subjects and have been either overlooked, or acclaimed i.e. almost every WWII shooter released. None of them accurately depict the horrors that those soldiers went through back then, they'll never be able to do it. The medal of honor game that opened with the Normandy shootings for example.

I don't really think you can educate at all by allowing interaction with a replicated experience.

My point was simply that this is not the only game with an open argument to it. I'm sure Jack could take issue with a few other war games out there too.

So this would be a game like "It's a Beautiful Life" what's wrong with that? The movie won oscars and awards for showing how some people would get past the horrors. If they can make a great movie off of it why can't they make a game like it as well.

7 - It's hard to critcise
the man's opinion considering he's one of the last few survivors left. None of us can even being to imagine what he went through.

@Zane above me ...

I think he's upset because the medium of learning is a game. I don't think he considers it to be a laughing matter or anything to make a game about.

And he'd actually be right. But that'd also apply to all WWII games out there. It's wrong to attempt to replicate that experience at all, but unfortunately in the business world, it seems to sell.

7.2 - Don't get me wrong but,
I think genocide is a little different than a war. Not that war is good but, genocide just seems a little bit more rooted in evil.

Honestly, I think he's a little outdated. Teaching things to kids through games is a great idea in this hi-tech world. I just think it's hard to criticize the man after what he's gone through.

I have actually been to a holocaust memorial museum twice and it really educated me on how such evil can be committed by such propaganda that Hitler did. But this is just a game if someone were to try and recreate what Hitler tried to do then it would be a problem.

9 - I sincerely doubt this game will ever be on the shelves...
...considering Nintendo's conservative and family friendly image. I just can't honestly see them publishing and marketing this game given the controversy that has already emerged.

Plus, I doubt any game company will embrace the project, given that (no matter how the game ultimately ends up) its subject matter will almost assuredly create a firestorm in the general media.

12 - Go visit Yad Va'Shem in Jerusalem
The Israeli Holocaust museum and receive an education before making flippant remarks about the Holocaust or any survivors.

WWII changed the world. An entire culture was murdered.

I've stated before that I think that a "game", if educational and done tastefully, could be a good thing, however I have no way of verifying if this game treats the subject that way. Kids don't want to read books or watch black and white video of WWII, thats just how kids are. If you can educate through a medium that they'll sit through, then so be it.

It would be better to call it a computer aided educational experience instead of a video game. The name is where all the problems are coming in here because yes the Holocaust is not a game.

Maybe if the first poster had been exposed to this "game" he wouldn't have been so ignorant.

This guy may have been a holocaust survivor, but this guy is only entitled to speaking for himself. How does he know that PEOPLE don't need this kind of game.

Video games always get a bad rap when it tries to be creative, just because it's a video game. Like how Ebert and Roeper say video games can never be art, when there are countless games with amazing graphics, art direction, and plot that match the best of movies. Just because it's called a video game, everyone's supposed to think it's all about mario jumping on enemies and 9 year old kids going "oh mario is cool!" And of course, anything that kids like are always below the likes of douche bags like Ebert and Roeper, right?

And in this game, just because it's called a video game, kids can't learn anything from it, right? After all, video games can only be a bad influence, right? The minute games try to be educational and be a good influence, people come out and say that we don't need this type of stuff.

Video games, like films or books or music, are just another type of medium. You know, just another means of communication. Just because this guy prefers books or films, he's going to shut out the possibility that any other medium might be useful or effective. He's just another old-fashioned, judgmental, and close-minded person who cannot get on with the times.

I think video games should be appreciated for what it can do.

It could be like a few have mentioned, he doesn't understand them. Many older generations see video games as fun for children. You can't blame him for his views. Coming from a Military Historian, yeah I agree with him, but why you ask? WW II is one of my particular interests of study, having said that I've studied in depth of the Holocaust. What he says holds true. The only way folks learn from History is to read, see and hear if possible. It was a truly horrid time for these folks. The things I've read in accounts from American Soldiers to the survivors themselves is enough to make a grown man weep. My interest in this and of WW II comes from the fact that my Grandfather was a Sniper in WW II and he was Jewish. I fully understand where this man is coming from. Being Jewish myself, I know of some of the hardships of what my people go through.
Some of the comments on here are clearly from the uneducated and ignorant of the world. To those of you who don't understand his point of view try walking in his shoes, hit the books. Do some extensive research on this. The High School version only touches the horrors.
