Was COD4 Really '07's Top Seller?

Activision said Friday that Call of Duty 4 was the top-selling game of 2007, with unit sales of 7 million. But Microsoft said earlier this year that Halo 3 sold 8.1 million 2007… so who was on top?

A press announcement made rounds Friday, coming out of Santa Monica, Calif.-based Activision. The publisher trumpeted how Call of Duty 4, released in November 2007, has sold 7 million units worldwide, which makes it the "#1 Title in Units Worldwide for Calendar 2007." Activision cites figures from NPD Group, GfK Group and Chart Track.

But you may recall that Microsoft announced in early January that September's Halo 3 had sold 8.1 million units worldwide. So that would appear to be the top-selling title of '07, according to Microsoft anyway.

So which one was the top-seller?

I live in the UK and we are just as into Halo as the US. At my university there was a queue of people outside the post room waiting to pick up preordered copies of halo 3 on release day. A kid spent all his food money on a limited edition halo 3 xbox, it was a funny day. I think everyone of my friends with a 360 has Halo 3 and not quite as many have call of duty.

A lot of people bought Halo 3 for the same reason as I did there wasn't sh!t else. Then Mass Effect turned out to be a disappointment so I kept it for a while and then traded them both for COD4

That's a stupid question. Halo 3 will continue to sell while COD4 will eventually die down just like the rest. Halo 2 was in the top 10 for over 3 years. Plus Halo 3 is still out selling every ps3 game on the market. Halo 3 will be in the top 10 for a long long time. Their is only one game that will give Halo 3 a challenge and that is GTA4. Not MGS and not FF and definitely not Haze or KZ2.

I would say they are about level in sales,with HALO 3 having an edge but that is a testament to the power of the HALO franchise.That it requires a juggernaut like call of duty 4 which was released on 4 platforms to match it.They both deserve the success that they got

In terms of sales every Grand Thef Auto games starting with 3 have outsold Halo 2 and last time I check San Andrea sold 11+ million copies. Way more than Halo 2 life time sales which is about 3 million copies more than Halo 2 life time sales so basically GTA IV will have NO problem outselling Halo 3. Final Fantasy X sold almost up to 8 million copies which is pretty close to Halo 2 life time sales. Same thing goes for Metal Gear Solid 2. As you can see everytime a Final Fantasy game or a Metal Gear Solid game make the jump to next-gen it will sell upwards to at least 8 million copies so how can you say that Final Fantasy and Metal Gear Solid is not a challenge to Halo 3?

I understand where firstknight is coming from.The user base of the Playstation when MGS2 was released was already like 3 if not more times than that of the 360(lets say around 50million) when HALO 3 came out.And seeing that the userbase of the PS3 is around 10million now and with 1 or 2 more million by the time MGS4 comes out, will require around 70percent of the PS3 userbase to purchase the game in order to beat HALO3.That is going to be an incredibly difficult feat.

As for GTA4 it would beat HALO3 considering its multiplatform.

Metal Gear Solid 2 came out in 2001 a year after the Playstation 2 launched and Halo 3 came out two years after the 360 launched. And there were a lot of negative news about the PS2 so I doubt that the PS2 userbase was 3 or more times larger than the 360 was when Halo 3 launched.

mgs had nothing to comepete agaist. Everyone forgets the ps2 was a barren landscape for gamers in 2001. Nothing was out. Onimusha was the only game available. MGS2 was extremely hyped. It was the Ps2's savior. Then came GTA, and DMC in consecative months.

Halo sold around 6.5 million, right? Microsoft gave out shipment figures, but I've seen Halo 3 copies at 7-11 (I kid you not, right next to the cigarettes) so shipment figures don't mean much. I guess if we count PS3, 360, and PC sales together then it probably beat Halo 3. It's a better game than Halo anyway.

usually things like hype will boost the games sales before word gets out on if its good or not.
you only need to look at Assassins creed to realise that some games that aren’t the best get better sales than other games that are built well and have a better story line.

World of Warcraft sold a shade under 10 million subscriptions at US$15 every month of last year lol.

Super Mario World sold the most with 40+ million units! So according to you guys it is the best game ever made since it sold the most units. Actually now that I think about it it probably is one of the best games ever made so my point is pretty useless...
