Xenogears For the First Time

Heath and Janelle Hindman have run into a marital problem: he's never played Earthbound and she's never played Xenogears. This needs to be resolved immediately. For the next however long, they'll remedy this problem, and invite you along for the ride. In this first podcast, the couple discusses Janelle's progress in her first run through Xenogears. (For those interested in Xenogears, it is now available on PSN for play on PS3 and PSP.)

Xenogears is awesome, unfortunately it didn't age as well as Earthbound. Any rpg fan should consider it their duty to play both if they haven't already.

Eamon4383d ago

I tried to play Xenogears about a year ago. I didn't quite get the combat system and the navigation in towns was awful. The camera is zoomed in too much and the fact you could rotate it confused the hell out of me of where I should go.

I'll probably try again later this summer. I hear the story is really good. I also completed Xenoblade last year.

knifefight4383d ago

Wacky O_O The battles and town exploration were two of the highlights for me. Bummer that they gave you problems. Hopefully it goes better the second time around for you.

Xenoblade isn't really related to Xenogears, though. It just has the same director; he didn't even give it that name, the other guys did it as "an honor" to him and his previous work. It was previously called "Monado: The Beginning of the World."

Lucretia4383d ago

The gameplay is pretty simple. im guessing you never played legend of legaia 1 or 2 either?

you input commands, X is one attack, O is another, Square and triangle, you can do a random combination if you want and discover a new move.

Certain combinations result in skills, sooo

XXO would be Drill buster, XXXO is Chaotic Reign, XOX would be Emphereal Divination, X,Triangle, O, Square would be Seraphic Symphony.

pretty simple and fun to discover new moves, also ones you get your Gears (big robots) it becomes even more awesome not to mention the amazing story

Xenogears is in my top three RPGs of all time. Competing with Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy 6.

It also has my favorite battle system of any RPG as well as one of the best overall stories. The only real fault it has is that the game wasnt finished. Square lowered the budget on it to shift to the Final Fantasy series. In order to release the game on time they had to cut some game play from the second half of the game. This resulted in key parts being told from a main character's perspective while sitting in a chair and showing scenes of what was supposed to be game play. Overall though, the story in the game is so fantastic that you don't even mind the missing parts.

Mikhail4383d ago (Edited 4383d ago )

Xenogears would have been more awesome if not for the budget cut (which result into more cutscenes in part two). It did not had a mainstream popularity because of its themes and concept regarding religion. Having a sex scene in the game also added some controversy.

kevnb4383d ago

Its one of the most successful Japanese made rpgs ever, and one of the only ones not named final fantasy to find success outside Japan

Infernostew4383d ago

It did well enough to get a late greatest hit reprint in NA.

catch4383d ago

Two of my all-time favorite games. Earthbound has timeless charm and humor, and Xenogears has a fantastic battle system and truely mature character development and plot.

The first of the Earthbound portions has been posted now!

Fantastic game. Adult themes. No bull. No clichè. A masterpiece. And the music is made by a hero of musicians.

Please Square Enix, Bring Back Xenogears

Square Enix's interest in reviving its classics is the long-awaited ray of hope and the ideal chance to resurrect adored gems like Xenogears.

CrimsonWing69256d ago

Seriously, I mean if anything an HD Remaster. I wish they had the balls to allow the entire story to be made, but I get the financial gamble won't all for it.

Terry_B256d ago

Is it even up to Square Enix?

ZeekQuattro256d ago

Xenogears is Square. Maybe you're thinking of Xenosaga which is Namco.

Tacoboto255d ago

Possibly Xenoblade, which is Nintendo.

... Also my phone wants to autocorrect to a "XenoVerse", is that another Xenofranchise?

InsaneChronos256d ago

Please don't. I will not survive another "Chrono Cross Remaster".

on_line_forever256d ago

Bring back vagrant story & parasite eve

mrcatastropheAF256d ago

Agree but do Parasite Eve first lol

I would definitely enjoy a Xenogears remaster. Recently finished Legend of Dragoon again (this time with platinum trophy) and would love to dive back into Xenogears with Fei and the rest of the crew.

closed_account286d ago

Came here to say Xenogears as well. Great taste, raWfodog!

notachance286d ago

It needs more than a remaster though, I hope they can turn disc 2 into a full game..

Kneetos285d ago (Edited 285d ago )

I wonder how they would even handle a xenogears remaster

Would they give it to monolith soft (the original developers) to handle, and more then likely make it a Nintendo exclusive, cue the endless bitching from Sony fans...

Or will they do it themselves, thus not finishing the original story as intended

raWfodog285d ago

"... and more then likely make it a Nintendo exclusive"

I would think it'd eventually hit all the platforms much like the Front Mission 1st Remake. That way no one would be 'bitching' regardless of your platform preference lol.

Miraak82 285d ago

They don't need the original people , they already have the foundation of characters ,world and lore to work off of.
Honestly it's not that big of a game if you really examine it by modern standards , it's how they present everything that makes it seem so grand especially with how epic the story/music is . SE have good writers that could incorporate post release lore of perfect works and such if they ever remade it from the ground up.

gold_drake287d ago

"THE BOUNCER"

scares me everytime i play it haha

Godmars290286d ago (Edited 286d ago )

Maybe this time around it could be good/playable?

Becuzisaid285d ago

Lol! What a game. Had a lot of fun with it. Beat it multiple times!

Marcello287d ago

Square Enix classics? dont they mean Squaresoft. Square Enix dont make classic games, just games with pretty graphics, no heart & soul, boring & over stuffed with woke Gen Z cockiness.

But while were on the subject i would love too see a remaster of Front Mission 3.

ZeekQuattro286d ago

They already announced a Front Mission 3 remake. Doubt they'll also do a remaster.

Marcello286d ago

I will get the remake but i still want a remaster cos with all remakes they lose a lot of the original magic the original game had.

Godmars290286d ago

Pretty sure its going to be a remaster of the game, similar to what's been done with the first two games, not a remake.

FF7r is certainly more a remake of FF7 than a remaster for instance.

Now, if they did Gun Hazard remaster...

raWfodog286d ago (Edited 286d ago )

Yeah they call it a remake like "Front Mission 1st Remake" but I'd consider it more of a remaster as it doesn't change any of the core gameplay but basically just sharpens up the graphics. I think they added a couple of new features also but I still think it's more of a remaster.

Like @Godmars290 suggested, FF7Remake fits the mold of a remake since they 'remade' the game from the ground up, changing the battle system completely, and retelling the story with a lot of different elements added.

But I guess they can call it what they want since they're making it lol.

DeadManMMX286d ago

Exactly. SquareSoft merged with Enix shortly after Final Fantasy X and it has never been the same.

Gardenia286d ago

I miss the old Squaresoft games. So much quality back then.

Terry_B287d ago

Almost all of the listed games are not Square Enix Classics lol

Cmon Square, release a 90s remastered collection and include this game

Godmars290365d ago

With Monolith at Nintendo, any number of licenses all over the place, they may not be able to.

FinalFantasyFanatic365d ago

The PS3 PSN has it, I'm hoping it ends up as a PS Classic on PS4/PS5, I really want it to happen, especially if it gets Legend of Dragoon's improvements.

sadraiden365d ago

While there are night and day improvements to textures and assets such as character portraits and maps, contrary to the article, it doesn't seem like they touch any sprites with this romhack.

FinalFantasyFanatic365d ago

This is how remasters should look, I would love to have this game on PS4/PS5, it really gives the game new life.
