God of War: Ascension is Coming to PS3

The studio has a lot of talent. Better to let them experiment with a new IP (like Naughty Dog is doing with TLoU) than tie them down to Kratos forever.

They took a page out of Microsoft's book or bungies book. Before moving on to a new possible trilogy for next gen, release the origin storylike reach. But then 343 & microsoft go and do something crazy and release halo 4 for 360. They have to have it though.

Sony would b real smart to release a gow4 as a launch title for ps4. Who knows, maybe santa monica moves on to something new and another studio of great talent and gow lovers will be created to start the new trilogy, lol.

@lastdueal Yea they can pick up with plenty of ideas for GOW4. With the Ascension title, I thought this was gonna be GOW4...

Also they could do an open world sandbox GOW where you can control a lot of things. Elements, mechanics, people, emotions, basically anything and wreck havoc. Something like that I would save for PS4. More gorgeous graphics :)

Someone also said they could have made this trailer to draw away attention, possible but maybe not this time.

In case you missed it, Kratos died in GOW3. They aren't going to continue the series after all the gods are dead. They can only do prequels at this point because of the poor choices made by the idiots who wrote GOW3's ending.

After all Athena seemed to be helping him even before he decided to go after Hades and we don't know who else was helping him.In GOW 1 he was frustrated with Athena asking her when will he be forgiven for his misdeeds and the torment be ended. We have no idea how long he was working against Hades with Athena. She could easily be helping him out just the way the Gods and Titans were doing.

I think it will take place before Kratos kills his family. Kratos served Ares for a pretty long period. So maybe we can still have the blades of chaos.

If it's after his deal with Ares, it should be pretty similar gameplay wise. He was in servitude to the gods for 10 years before GOW1, culminating in Chains of Olympus which had the same combat/power system.

No Icarus wings will be the biggest difference, but plenty of room to up the ante on melee abilities. The running spear/tackle in Ghost of Sparta for example was quite useful.

Magics are always found as he goes. From the Persian King's Efreet to Charon's Wrath.

Kratos already had some sort of relationship with the Gods. It may have been adversarial at that time. But remember, he was a demigod already. Whether or not he was a prodigal son is certainly a matter that will bear directly on the story.

according to amazon this game will be released on the 31st december 2013 but i sincerely hope this is just guess work. gow1 was released in 2005, gow2 in 2007 and gow3 in 2010. you'd think that now that they've got used to the ps3 they can do games in a 2 year cycle just like naughtydog. so im hoping for a 2012 fall release. whenever it is they can have my money right now.

I could make a list a longer than that for ms new ips this gen especially if you are opening it up to dl or psn games. On topic I don't feel the god of war series is milked since it hs a loyal following that want to keep playing. If this game somehow does bad or does not live up to its presecessers and they continue to make more games than that would be milking imo. God of War IV would be best left for next gen. This is a good way for Sony to cash in with a side-story, considering how well GoW3 sold. They'd be crazy not to push another GoW game out this gen despite the fact that 3 was supposed to be the last. Money talks.

This way, they can make good money without exhausting the potential to carry a strong brand into next gen. If they told GoW4 this gen, they'd lose a lot of steam for a GoW game next gen. I think it's a smart move.

There are lots of greek gods out there though, not just the big three.

Chains of Olympus had Kratos out to save Helios, ironic since he'd kill him in GOW3. Came across a couple other titans and gods along the way, same as in Ghost of Sparta. From titans like Atlas and Thera, to Hades' wife Persephone and Thanatos (Death).

I'd say it's more likely it takes place between the moment of his pact to slay the Barbarian King, thrusting Kratos in servitude to the God of War Ares, and the moment he slaughters his family. It really isn't made clear how long he was working for Ares before the unrest and decision to rebel was made.

I don't want it because it's yet another prequel. I'd rather have God of War 4. They can still easily carry on the story if you watched the last scene from God of War 3 after the credits.

This will be a rental at best and only if nothing else comes out around it. I wouldn't even bother trying to platinum it either. It would be a game just to play through and send it back ASAP.

All of these prequels like the PSP games are nothing but cash-ins and it's getting way too obvious now. Games don't need to have prequels to begin with. The first game will be the prequel. Regardless, no game needs more than 1 fucking prequel.

If u listen to the trailer,she says "But there was a time before Kratos became the monster known as the ghost of sparta.I assume this could mean that we play the role of Kratos before he killed his family.If I remember correctly Kratos earned became "Ghost of Sparta" after he destroyed the village and killed his wife and kid and the oracle cursed Kratos with his families ash thus turning him white and earning the name Ghost of Sparta. She also says "A time when something other than rage consumed him" Going by that line it seems we will be playing the role of a rageless Kratos this time around also? the god of war series, while excellent, needs to die. this will be 6 full games in ~8 years (along with 2 HD collections covering 4 games), when really we only needed the main 3.

God of War 1 was epic. 2 was great. 3 was really good, but by then it felt decidedly "last gen" with just a flashy coat of paint. hold block while the enemies go through their attack routines, wait for them to leave themselves open, do your square-square-triangle combo a few times, rinse repeat.

id rather they just finished the series when they actually finished the series - after god of war 3. theyve just been milking it with the 2 PSP games and the 2 HD collections and now this yet another prequel. its unnecessary to the overall story of god of war, its just money grabbing.

i still hold GOW as one of the best games of all time, but unless Ascension brings a radical change to the gameplay im going to give it a miss until its in the bargain bin. there are only so many times you can walk into a room, have red magical barriers block the exits, and then use the same combos to beat the same predictable enemies before it gets boring.

what am i saying though - its a PS3 exclusive so its OMG GOTY 11/10 OMGOMGOMG. 50:1 disagree to agree ratio incoming from N4PS3G in 3,2,1.....

I think they may focus in on the era of when he was doing Ares dirty work, slaying villages.
He had a lil' power then, to some degree. But if this is the route their taking, it would be enlightening @ least, & may be setting the stage for an GoW4.
If they make any changes, the most they should do is imply slight RPG-elements, like; upgrading Kratos stats, or allowing him to go back & forth between stages/zones, give him dialogue choices, etc. Doing so can better express how he increased in power over time.

I know many will disagree with me here, but we've already had a prequel for God of War; I want to see what happened next for Kratos, not some retcon story that starts with "Hey,you know Kratos' story? Did you hear about this one time when...?"

While i agree with wanting a sequel, The two existing prequels were very informative and quite frankly very fun. Seeing Kratos and Deimos take on death itself was such an amazing moment in my opinion. If this is indeed a "prequel" and it holds awesome moments like that brotherly reunion or that King Midas bit from GoS (lol) than i think we are in for quite a treat. :b

Trying to start a flame war, but I d not see how people say halo is being milked when there have been only six games and you only played as master cheif in 2 and a half of those games and with halo 4 3 and half. But there will be 7 gow games all starring kratos, but there is nothing wrong with that because is story is worth telling just like the halo stories. Im going against the whole its a prequel idea.
I think at the end of GOW 3, what ever happened to Kratos, he`s no longer "bound by blood" as it says in the trailer.
He notice`s the chaos he has created in the world. But as Zues is dead, there now is a fight for power with other Gods/Titans etc. Kratos wants to put things right, but now you have this fight for power which Kratos has to stop and put things right!!. Sony and SMS are sly when it comes to trailers to make you think what they want then blow you out the water!! just my opinion :-)

Could be one game that covers all the events told in the cutscenes from God of War 1, so starting as a promising captain in the army of Sparta, the battle with the barbarians, a beautiful HD version of Kratos receiving the Blades of Chaos, lots of slaughtering for Ares, ending with you killing your family and the mother of all videogame cutscenes, Kratos becoming The Ghost of Sparta recreated in HD, perhaps with the ashes in 3D:) After that a epilogue or something that covers the killing of Ares and Kratos' ascension to Olympus as the new God of War. That'll be the last we see of him, and fitting imo. Kratos being The God of War. And no God of War 4 untill far in the PS4 era when someone skilled like Jaffe comes up with a valid story to continue where God of War 3 ended, which is no easy task considering each and everyone is pretty much dead

I read on a German site they're aiming for a Spring 2013 releasedate, which would be excellent imo. I know SM have been helping LBI with Starhawk, but this could be in development for 2 years already with another year to go. Think what ND did with their engine in 2 years, SM should be capable of doing the same. I expect Ascension to look absolutely stellar. This is by no means a cash-in, and I'm really looking forward to it.

I was very sceptical about all this GoW4 rumours. GoW3 had the perfect ending it wouldn't make sense to continue the story. Now that I know that it's gonna be a prequel I'm ok with it but:

Everybody has to be aware that this probably won't top GoW3. It's a prequel. After killing all these gods and titans in GoW3 it's going to be a step back from that.

Opinion:

God of War series is one of the FEW series in video games where EACH sequel was exponentially BETTER than the previous (in both sales and reception).

The fact that each one was led by a DIFFERENT director says a lot about the synergy of the team.

I'm all for no GoW game as the previous one ended on a high note, but considering their track record I welcome what they do next.

Someone on youtube left this comment "Pay close attention to 0:43. Notice how she emphasized TIME and all of a sudden switches from past tense to future tense. In GOW2 he went back in time to save himself. Now I think he'll go back in time to save his family. It's not a prequel. It's a sequel. After watching the trailer over again I think this person may be right,when she says "But there WAS a time BEFORE Kratos became the monster known as the Ghost of Sparta,a time when something other than rage consumed him.
