The Backlog: Fatal Frame

DF writes: There was big trend in horror films about ten years ago where they were all about ghosts. Not just any ghosts, but Japanese ghost girls. The Japanese film Ring got the ball rolling, but soon American theaters were awash with knock-offs that used Japan’s unique interpretation of evil spirits. This quickly spread to video games and suddenly the zombies of survival horror games found themselves competing with ghosts for the attention of gamers who liked spooky tales. The zombies won that battle and have remained the go-to bad guys for horror games, but I recall being terrified of the first game to use this premise, Fatal Frame.

There were a few sequels in the years immediately following its release, but I never continued with the series, or even revisited the first game. Now with Spirit Camera, the “spiritual” successor of the Fatal Frame series arriving for 3DS, I decided to stay up late, turn down the lights and play the first couple of Fatal Frame titles.

Fatal Frame is still the greatest horror game period..

One of the interesting facts was that it was based loosely on a true story...

I disagree with the author on the versions..I had them both..but the original PS2 version is the best version ever.

I hope they do an HD remake copmilation of both of them ala ICO..that would be heaven.

I would like a Vita version. I think it would add to the atmosphere using AR in the game and would love to see it actually depict ghosts in your house. oooohhhh spooookkyyy

I think silent hill 1 would have something to say about that!
I must admit though fatal frame is one of the most scariest games ever made.
Theres just something about japanese ghosts that are so freakin scary. I really hope we do get a HD collection for these games they really deserve to be remastered.

I agree with Harry that if your going to argue a scarier game that Fatal than The original Silent Hill would be high on your list. Unfortunately the graphics are up to today's standards, but I would have jumped up and down like a child if the original was a part of the HD collection.

I always had hoped that that there would have been a remake of the original with random changes ala the Gamecube Resident Evil remake. But,IMO ultimately SH and It's sequel were as scary as it got until the Fatal Frame came along and changed the game.

Yeah the graphics suck now,yet it still doesn't
hurt the atmosphere in the game its still scary as hell
when played alone at night lol.
You cant beat being trapped in a mansion
full of horrible japanese ghost women though haha!
Fatal Frame and silent hill are the only games
where i had to stop playing and take a break because they were freaking me out so much lol.

if you have this game on your backlog, stop what you're playing right now and put this game on. then, play Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly afterwards...

Great game, I loved the second. Sadly, my copy of the 3rd went missing, hhmm.
I remember trying to snap a shot of the random ghosts, to complete my collection. I must've played through those games 5-6 times each. Definitely worth a look, for anyone with an interest in the genre.
