Blacklight: Retribution - Free-to-play just got a quality boost (Hooked Gamers)

Hooked Gamers writes: "Back in 2007, I was flat broke. I decided to challenge myself to game for a couple of months without spending a dime, legally of course. I had dabbled in free-to-play online games such as SilkRoad Online, but was surprised to find an FPS on my list of games to get. War Rock turned out to be a very fun distraction, for its lack of a price.

When Blacklight: Tango Down was released in 2010 it received generally mixed reviews. Most reviewers agreed, however, that for a measly 15$, this was probably the best multiplayer FPS experience change could buy. With the upcoming sequel, Blacklight: Retribution, currently in open beta, Zombie Studios obviously listened to their audience as the best aspect of the game, the price, has been made even better by disappearing altogether. Being free does not make a game good, however, and with the plethora of other free-to-play shooters on the market today, it's starting to get about as competitive as the big budget market. We got our hands on the final build of Blacklight: Retribution and gave it a run for its... Zen."

I hated Tango Down. The balance was awful, people were abusing game mechanics and don't get me started on the spawn rape.

You want a good multiplayer game? Get Team Fortress 2 for free or buy Gotham City Impostors on Steam while it's still on sale.

Tango down sucked!! the game was laggy an the controls werent smooth at all. Retribution is actually a very good balanced smooth running game. Glad its F2P. Wish it would come to Ps3 knowing how sony is growing its F2P market for its systems.

I personally hate f2p games cause it just robs legit buyers since a complete game of 60 bucks gets turned into 150 or more but the ONLY game I love that is f2p iw tribes Acend and its amazing. I played a good amount of the Blacklight f2p and It was really bad considering how much equipment costs and how its almost all rent and no perm purchases compared to all permanent in Tribes :)

Obviously PC wasn't cuttin it, PS4 is a Juggernaut, makes sense.

That sucks

Shut the servers down but let people host their own and keep these games active for those who want to play. Its bullshit when they kill a game completely when they could easy patch it for hosting / creating online content

Blacklight Retribution Servers & Official Support Ending in March, All Items Made Free

Hardsuit Labs has mentioned that the Blacklight Retribution servers are shutting down on March 11 for PC, though PS4 version will continue as is. All items in the PC store are now free.

Another one bites the dust.

Father__Merrin1903d ago

Remember playing this when I first got a ps4. Never good news to see games shut down I guess one day online only games can bite the dust

Sgt_Slaughter1903d ago (Edited 1903d ago )

This is why buying into these sort of games are a bad idea.

BlacKJesu51903d ago

That's like saying buying cod at 60 is bad..cause you know a new version is coming and you won't play last years

Sgt_Slaughter1903d ago

Not even slightly the same. I can still play Modern Warfare 2 because, guess what, it still works online AND it has offline modes. This applies to I think every Call of Duty game.

With Blacklight, everything you've ever purchased is gone forever after the servers are gone, and you can never play the game again.

BlacKJesu51902d ago

Is there no other f2p games.....Apex legends just came out..play the new version

masterfox1903d ago

See this is why online mp only games effing sucks and definitely will never support them. ;)

Giblet_Head1903d ago

Depending how much of a cult following it has, it could be revived by some mod team in the distant future. Similar cases have happened with games like 2142 and Star Wars Galaxies.

excaliburps1903d ago

Yes, I see this happening if the fanbase is there, too.
