Sleeping Dogs: Chinese GTA Bringing Real Competition

Currently there’s not much known about GTA V. Things like how large the world will be, and the number of features that will appear in the game, have all been rumored about. But nothing has officially been revealed. It’s not hard to speculate about GTA 5, a history of drug dealing, carjacking, and gang fights in previous Grand Theft Auto games offers enough ammunition for speculation on what GTA V could bring to the table.

I'll believe it when I..you know what, no.

IRetrouk4412d ago (Edited 4412d ago )

OPM gave it a very positive preview in this months mag, have to admit it looks good and sounds fun, one interesting thing OPM said was that it definitely didn't deserve being canned by Activision for quality reasons

andron4412d ago

Well, Sleeping Dogs seems like it will be good fun. It will be nice to play a undercover cop instead of all these thugs...

specialguest4412d ago

According to Wikipedia, it says that you play as an undercover cop infiltrating the Triads. http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...

specialguest4412d ago

My first reply wasn't necessary.

killerhog4412d ago

It won't be of competition critically or sales wise. It's made by a dev not really know by many and a publisher who are currently being criticed by fans. It's also a new IP. Most westerners will see it as some Japanese gta rip-off filled with crap most westerners dislike about Japanese games/style. china town wars was the least selling gta this gen I believe. Besides with little info we got on gta5 most journalist are already having wet dreams about it and will be fastidious/harsh on sleeping dogs.

specialguest4412d ago

First of all, the game is developed by a Canadian developer United Front Games known for making ModNation Racers, and in addition to Sleeping Dogs, are developing LBP Karting. Secondly, the game is based off of Hong Kong in China, not Japan. Are you suggesting that westerners are too ignorant to understand the difference?

I'm not going to presume success or failure of the game, but I applaud the United Front Games for putting effort into their attempt to develop something different. A game that seems authentic instead of portraying Asians(specifically Chinese) in a cliche Hollywood stereotype.

killerhog4412d ago (Edited 4412d ago )

Didn't bother reading your comment as the first sentence insinuates you missed the point completely.

Edit: I decided to read your comment. Modnation racers (ps3) didn't sell well and modnation racers (PsP) sold even less. Only people who would know them are the few who bought modnation racer games. Squareenix is a known company and people know its a Japanese company.

Really you guys disagreeing are either delusional or have high hope/faith in this game. Think about it why isn't yakuza selling millions of copies in the west? It's a gta inspired game based on the yakuza. Also united front is Canadian not Japanese so don't expect them to have the backing of Japanese gamers. I mean western games don't seem to sell well over there like it would here.

andron4412d ago (Edited 4412d ago )

@killerhog

I think you underestimate gamers here. Most gamers know SE have a western arm now after buying up Eidos, and they have published several games now.

GTAV isn't out for a while and Sleeping Dogs will be out before it so it will have a chance. Also many gamers have been dissatisfied with the direction GTAIV took and want a more action filled open world game.

Edit: The mafia in Hong Kong is triads not yakuza...
I'm willing to take a chance on this game as a the footage I have seen so far look promising...

GTA 5’s cut “James Bond Trevor” DLC was already part-shot, actor says

The GTA 5 Agent Trevor DLC episode could have been a real treat for fans on PlayStation and Xbox, before it was scrubbed sometime before 2017.

More interested in money than giving fans what they want. Such a shame

CrimsonWing697d ago

With the amount of money they generated, I just don’t understand the scrubbing of this. It would’ve been fantastic for fans.

Profchaos7d ago

I really want to know who drove the decision to focus on multiplayer was it Rockstar or take two.

Because when online started taking off many of the studio leads began having falling outs and leading including a founder

Demetrius6d ago

Ikr mfs that greedy it's ridiculous

andy857d ago

This makes me sad. Trevor was one of my favourite characters in gaming

Demetrius6d ago

One of the reason I believe once gta 6 release, most of us thoroughly play it, enjoy the world they crafted then after that no offline support, no dlc at all

It's A Crime That There's No Sleeping Dogs 2 Yet

Huzaifah from eXputer: "Sleeping Dogs from the early 2010s is one of the best open-world games out there but in dire need of a resurgence."

LG_Fox_Brazil15d ago

I agree, I consider the first one a cult classic already

isarai14d ago

You say "yet" as if it's even possible anymore. United Front Games is gone, along with anyone that made this game what it is

CrimsonWing6914d ago

That’s what happens when games sell poorly. And I’ve seen people wonder why people cry when a game sells badly… this is your answer.

solideagle14d ago

Majority of the time it's true but if a company/publisher is big (in terms of money), they can take a hit or 2. e.g. I am not worried about Rebirth sales as Square will make Remake 3 anyway but if FF 17 doesn't sell then Square might need to look for alternative. <-- my humble opinion

Abnor_Mal14d ago

Doesn’t Microsoft own the IP now since they acquired Activision?

DaReapa14d ago

No. Square Enix owns the IP.

Abnor_Mal14d ago

Oh okay, Activision owned True Crime, but when that didn’t sell as intended it was canceled. Six months later Square Enix bought the rights and changed the title to Sleeping Dogs.*

*As per Wikipedia

boing114d ago (Edited 14d ago )

Sleeping Dogs was a sleeper hit back then. It was fantastic. It actually still is. Would love a sequel to this, or at least a revive of True Crime series.
