No Backward Compatibility For PS4 Orbis? No Problem In The Long Run

Techtorial: Yesterday, some critiques were a bit surprised hearing Playstation 4 (Orbis) won't include "backward compatibility" support for PS3 games. Today, we're hear to tell you this decision might be lucrative on Sony's end and the Playstation brand itself.

When I heard the PS3 took out BC I was annoyed but I realized that when the PS2 had BC I never used it. With my PS3 I never used it either...so I don't have a problem with it not being BC with PS3 games.

Dante1124415d ago (Edited 4415d ago )

Wow, Sony next gen console is getting trolled hard. We don't even know if this will even be true yet the journalists are pushing stuff out as fact. Like Patcher said, I'm taking this with a grain of salt. I think the Orbis as well as the Durango will have BC.

Rai4415d ago

just stating the fact that I don't care about BC. I do hope Sony doesn't put BC in the PS4, it would keep price down.

If the PS4 comes out within the next 2-3 years. The PS3 would of probably just reached the 150$ point, if they added that into the PS4 the price for machine would be ridiculous.

Baka-akaB4415d ago (Edited 4415d ago )

I prefer BC , but with history so far showing that when given the choice people didnt care about BC much , i dont see Sony heading back that path .

Either the ps3 will be emulated via software and the console's sheer power , or it will be dropped . I can't see them keeping pieces o the ps3 with additional costs inside .

Besides eveyone is already raving and frothing whenever some hd collection pop outs , for good and bad reasons alike . I can only see the trend going even bigger with remastered ps3 titles

Either i'll only care that much for BC if there aint regional restrictions , as with the ps3 , and always kept my old consoles around .

ProjectVulcan4415d ago

Rip out any hardware that might cost a bunch to emulate a machine i already own, and spend it on something else to improve the machine i will play by far the most for the next half decade.

Cheers.

Highlife4415d ago

I don't care if they have it or not. I don't want them to focus on trying to make it work. Just give me a system for the future not the past. I will keep my PS3 for those game.

Outside_ofthe_Box4415d ago (Edited 4415d ago )

I'd like to have BC out of pure convenience. But if it the PS4 doesn't have BC no big deal. I'm not going to skip buying a next gen console just because I can't play last gen games on it.

ABizzel14415d ago

I agree BC isn't really needed, but it's nice to have when you want to go back and play that one game you loved on a previous console.

That being said, Sony needs to make their entire back catalog downloadable.

guitarded774415d ago

I don't think it's as relevant to compare PS3 backward compatibility to PS1 and PS2 backward compatibility, because the games of this generation have longer legs with the growth of online multiplayer from an novelty on the PS2/Xbox to the status quo. Also, DLC has made the games of this generation greater investments for the players. Finally, we could be sold on the idea of PS2 backward compatibility going away because we were offered HD ports of our favorite games from the previous gen... but this gen is already in HD, so the games are still relevant. Of course I don't believe the rumor that PS4 will not be backward compatible, so none of this should matter.

EDIT: Forgot to add, that when a new console releases, the software line-up is very limited and players want to be able to play the games that are still popular on their new hardware.

ninavoljic4415d ago

Its still a rumor -- yes. However, haven't we heard from multiple sources, even last year, that Sony would shift from an IBM/Nvidia architecture to AMD/Radeon for its CPU & GPU? That alone would give credence BC for PS4 won't be available. For PS3, this was the same commotion six years ago and it took Sony a lot of trouble just to add "a little piece" of PS2's hardware with its newer kin.

Now, for Xbox 360, that'll be a different story since we all know Microsoft only provided "emulation" for the console to play old Xbox games and not a real BC support.

I'm the same as you Rai. I used it maybe once or twice on my 60gb to play Manhunt and GTA Vice City again. After that I never even noticed it was there and I had a PS2 anyway.

specialguest4415d ago

You want BC? Don't sell your PS3. Otherwise, good luck on Sony providing sufficient BC through emulation. I think on a business standpoint, they would rather reintroduce old classics on SEN at a certain cost.

criticalkare4415d ago

When I do get PS4 I'll still keep my PS3....

Bounkass4415d ago

I don't care. That's what I have my PS, PS2 and PS3 for...

Kurylo3d4415d ago

what happens when ps isnt made anymore and yours breaks?

Aggesan4415d ago

U get one 2'nd hand, really cheap.

Kurylo3d4415d ago (Edited 4415d ago )

really? going to be reduced to buying 20 year old hardware hoping that it wont break on u next week? lol

Provided you can find one in existance outside of a store...

Ill just say ... no

kneon4415d ago

They will keep making the PS3 for a long while yet just like they have done with the PS2. By the time the PS4 ships the PS3 will likely be selling at $150 or less.

PirateThom4415d ago

what sort of ridiculous arguement is this?!

Why does the Wii not play NES games?! What if my NES breaks?!

Kurylo3d4412d ago

because noone wants to replay a game from the wii.

I'd like BC. I didn't care that PS3 didn't have BC because PS2 games looked awful compared to PS3 games. I'm sure PS4 games will look amazing but I don't think the jump will be as significant. I would like to have BC next gen because the current gen games will still look good.

ninavoljic4415d ago (Edited 4415d ago )

Remember, the console might only be unveiled until 2014 (don't trust that holiday 2013 release either). Considering PS3 was launched on 2006, the jump of eight years in technology might be a leapfrog after all.

It's notable to say PS2 debuted on 1999 and PS3's tech seven years later is already gargantuan.

Rolling the Dice: Do Modern RPGs Miss the Point of Team-Based Play?

It seems it was long time ago. A bunch of friends spending hours on end playing RPG games, sitting around the table with the box of cold pizza. Excited about the story, listening to the Game Master, they were completely engaged in the worlds only visible to them and their imaginations.

The GM is the programmer, and in MMOs and co-ops, you can play with others. If you want to ONLY use your imagination for the visuals, read a book.

1) Hope they put it on disc this time.
2) Hope this is a positive for Neptune coming over as well.

Demons Souls5076d ago

If so, that's being developed & published by Idea Factory. Compile Heart has nothing to do with it (Thank God for that).

Godmars2905076d ago (Edited 5076d ago )

Thought Compile Heart was one of the companies lending characters.

Was also speaking in general as in regards to a US of Neptune. If these guys are offing a second game, NIS or Atlus, both of whom offer quirkier titles, will put that one out.

@kagon01:
My issue isn't - wholly - with the DL-only option, but the price. The first game should be $30. Maybe $40, and by that I mean $39.99. The only reason its $45 is the 360 disc version which has extras. Nevermind that by all rights its a PS2 game. Something that proabbly could have been done if the devs had the GOW2 engine or tools.

ClownBelt5076d ago

I approve of this god damn message.

Could have gotten my 60 bucks if they just put it on a disc.

Another exclusive damnn the ps3 keeps on rollin wit games awesome ;)

Jack-Pyro5076d ago

Is this a half decent SRPG, porn aside, cause if it is, i might just decide to go and buy it for the 360.

Anon73495076d ago

There's no porn just some sexual innuendos but that's it.

Also it is a great game by itself, maybe not graphically but everything else is top tier.

RedDevils5076d ago

so it had some kind of "top tier" porn story jk

ThanatosDMC5076d ago

Yup, it's a decent game. I just hate that a move has to go first before any attack options.
