Sketches of PlayStation Orbis Features Surface, Then Disappear

Kotaku - The design firm Coque Design may have worked on illustrations for certain features of the next PlayStation, according to pictures a tipster spotted on its website today.

The pictures, which have since been removed from the site, were labeled "Illustrations & Sketches for new PlayStation Orbis features." Orbis is the codename for Sony's next gaming console, as Kotaku revealed today.

I can't make anything of those 2 images, what is happening in there.

Cannot wait for the official PS4 announcement. =]

Some dude is recording girls gone wide on his phone?

FatGayandbald4424d ago

Its clearly an example of a guy taking pictures of a group of girls dancing through their window and the new pseye 2 can track all 3 girls dancing aswell as the peeping tom and it immediately alerts them !

That's what i got from it anyway ;)

humbleopinion4424d ago

They don't look very wide to me...

Tired4424d ago

Girls gone wide? Is that a soft-core spin-off?
Overweight American students binge eating and rubbing cake on each other!

lociefer4424d ago

they had to read comments to figure out this was ps eye ? rofl

irepbtown4423d ago (Edited 4423d ago )

Possibly a Sony Ericsson mobile phone that can control certain aspects of the new PS3.
So instead of the WII U type thing, its your mobile phone that does all that.

Atleast thats what I got from the second picture. The first one I have no clue what is going on...

Plus; it would make sense it is a Sony Ericsson phone as Sony recently brought the rights to the Sony Ericsson hence the new 'Sony Ericsson' is just called Sony Xperia and not Sony Ericsson Xperia.

morkendo234423d ago

@ fatgay
what i got out of it seem to look like clone of kinect with portable viewer recording girls dancing.

I think Kotaku is trolling us to legitimize their "Orbis" rumor. I just got through seeing those pictures 10 minutes ago from the site, even neogaf managed to snag ALL of the pictures.

StraightPath4424d ago

haha pathetic trying to combine kinect and wii u aspects if this is true. did not sony learn after a failing hardcore with a medicore piece of turb the move ?

fluffydelusions4424d ago

Sales wise it did just alright. Tech wise it blew the Wii controller away.

SilentNegotiator4424d ago (Edited 4424d ago )

Why is that pathetic that they would build on features like all game consoles have done since Pong?

Move is doing fine in sales, but isn't rocketing off because not enough games make use of it.

TekoIie4424d ago

@fluffydelusions

The PS move was comparable to wii motion plus. It did NOT blow it away.

--Onilink--4424d ago

while i dont agree with the way you make your comment, its true that the move didnt do well at all.

@fluffydelusions, the latest numbers Sony showed were about 10mill SHIPPED, and worse of all, 10mill including the navigation controller, which is kinda mandatory if you want to play decently.

So yeah, it honestly didnt do well, but it can also redeem itself if its FULLY supported since launch with the PS4

SilentNegotiator4424d ago

"worse of all, 10mill including the navigation controller"

Previous reported numbers specifically did NOT include nav/eye sales, so please give a reliable source on your claim.

Hayabusa 1174424d ago (Edited 4424d ago )

On the contrary, isn't it EXACTLY like Sony not to learn and rip off what other companies are doing with their peripherals? Dual shock came from the N64's analogue stick, Sixaxis came from the Wii-mote and when no one used it they tried something closer to the Wii-mote, the Move.

Who honestly DIDN'T expect the Kinect to be Sonyized? I'm not saying it's a bad thing, but they do it EVERYTIME.

Having said that, I think this article is fake.

No Way4423d ago

... where is your source?

SilentNegotiator4423d ago (Edited 4423d ago )

@No Way

http://www.1up.com/news/son...

When they reported 4.1 million shipped: "The figure doesn't include the navigation controllers or PlayStation Eye as separate sales"

@NoLinks
Sorry, but if no one is going to give a source saying that they handled the 10 million figure any differently, I don't believe some random person on N4G.

Looks like the new pseye will allow people to use it remotely on their phone some how.

E.g a group of friends are playing just dance. One friend goes onto her phone, uses pseye / ps orbis app to view what the pseye can see, record it and probably let u upload it social networking sites. Using the fone app u will be able to control the camers n zoom in etc.

It will probably also support AR making the recordings a lot more interesting.

The photos depict several people moving around in front of some sort of Kinect-like motion-sensing device that rests on top of a television.

Why call it kinect like, isn't it pseye like?

SuperLupe4424d ago

Nobody cared, cares or speaks about the pseye, maybe thats why.

SilentNegotiator4424d ago

At least 8 million people care.

catfrog4424d ago

there are probably more people who own ps eyes then there are people who own kinects. its been out for like 4 more years - theres just a lot of marketing for kinect right now

MrBeatdown4424d ago (Edited 4424d ago )

Great logic.

It looks like a PS Eye. It's made by the company that makes the PS Eye.

So let's refer to it as if it's something completely different even though we have no idea how it differs from the PS Eye!

irepbtown4423d ago

PS Eye has been there since PS2 era, so really it has been there for many, many years.

humbleopinion4424d ago (Edited 4424d ago )

Because Kotaku don't know what they're talking about. The actual phrase they used was "Kinect-like motion-sensing device", but Kinect is not a motion sensing device, it's (primarly) a depth sensor.

So they got it wrong anyway, but I guess that the general assumption is that Sony will finally move to using 3D depth sensing technology as well (or something equivalent), and not use a simplistic RGB camera for 3 generations in a row.

Series_IIa4424d ago (Edited 4424d ago )

And how does it detect depth in a 3D environment? With an motion sensing infrared beam projection...

Cryptcuzz4424d ago

Its the way kotaku writers garner more attention. I notice they do this often to invoke attention from as many groups as possible. Come on, do you really think these guys can't tell a ps eye from a kinect? The writer knew full well that it would get flame baited into someone taking that bait and making a comment that would get all parties involved in making comments etc.

Go see the comment section on the site and you will see what i mean LOL.

LOL_WUT4424d ago

Some people cant get that through their head, that its a code name & not an actual name for Sony's next gen console.

Sevir4424d ago

as 4 is bad luck in japan and much like the Vita the PS brand will have a new nomenclature for the Home console! And it makes sense, peopel were complaining about the Name of the Vita, but in a few months it'll be apart of our Vocab. I dont mind the name at all

LOL_WUT4424d ago

I never mentioned PS4 i just said that it wont be called Orbis thats all as its only a codename.

TotalHitman4424d ago

13 is an unlucky number. It didn't stop Square Enix (a Japanese company as you should know) from using it in Final Fantasy. Twice.

Frankfurt4424d ago

"Shi" ("four") means DEATH, not just regular bad luck. You think Sony will call their console "Playstation Death", Total Hitman?

Wenis4424d ago

If we were able to accept Wii as part of our normal vocabulary, we can pretty much accept any name

Hicken4424d ago

"4" in itself is not an unlucky number. "Shi" or "shin" is, as it also implies death.

However, "yon" is also a word for four(often heard used in countdowns and the like), so there still wouldn't be any problems.

Additionally, the PS3 isn't called the PS San, but the PS Three, even in Japan.

PS4 as Playstation Four (or PS Four) is perfectly acceptable, and given that both of the numbered systems before it are called by their English names in Japan, why would that change, ESPECIALLY given the fact that, as mentioned, "shi" is not exactly a desired word to use?

Sevir4424d ago

They have avoided the number 4 because of the associations with the luck and superstition. we only need to look at the PSP to see. It's had 4 rivisions and each of the reviews are numerical up untill the the fourth and final rivision..

PSP-1000, PSP-2000 and PSP-3000 with the fourth being the PSPgo! Even it's its FCC registration serial number there isn't a "4" in anything.

Its just apart of the company's roots! The Vita is apart of the Company's naming scheme and They will avoid anything with the number 4 and given how they named the PSP's 4th revision the "Go" and the direction to use a name rather than anumber for it's successor, they'll follow suit with the Next Playstation Home Console.

Shadow Flare4424d ago

Really, I don't think Japan gives a rats crud about the number 4. Unless I merely imagined Metal Gear Solid 4, Gran Turismo 4, Final Fantasy 4, Street Fighter 4, Resident Evil 4, Ridge Racer 4, Tekken 4

Need I go on?

TenkoTAiLS4424d ago

I agree!! It won't be called Orbis! You just have to look at the Vita, it's codename was Vita and it didn't end up....oh wait

SquidBuck4424d ago

The Vita's code name was the NGP, if I remember correctly.

NIRVANArazor4424d ago

I think the pic is showing a bunch of people can be in front of the camera and the cam will only pick up the person it needs to. or something like that.

Ilovetheps54424d ago

All it seems to me is that someone is trying to get hits off of the recent "Orbis" rumors. I really don't listen to rumors very often. We'll see if this Orbis thing is true or not.
