Just Who Is Assassin’s Creed III’s New Hero?

The hero of Ubisoft's massive October video game is no Ezio Auditore or even an Altair. He's not a beloved rogue or a noble assassin. He's not the star of multiple games.

ninjaman9994432d ago

And he is completely right. It was still a time of patriarchal dominance in the household and female oppression. Is the writer trying to pull some shit? Cause I dont wana give him my click <_______<

DragonKnight4431d ago (Edited 4431d ago )

Here's my issue. The American Revolution may have been a time where men were still dominant over women, but AC3's main character is part Native and Native culture didn't have the same gender equality problems that European culture did. There were whole matriarchal societies among the Aboriginal peoples, such as the Mohawk tribes, and Aboriginal men respected women for the sacred gifts which they believed the Creator had given to them.

So this is just a load of B.S. really. It wouldn't be historically inaccurate to make the lead a female if the lead character were part Native. Plus, the other AC games weren't completely historically accurate to begin with.

Sabian1874431d ago

"Mohawk women were in charge of farming, property, and family."
"Mohawk clans were always ruled by women, who made all the land and resource decisions for each clan. But Mohawk chiefs, who made military decisions and trade agreements, were always men."

Mohawk women women were held in very high regard, but they were not taught to hunt or fight or make war.
Much like the Norse people women were in charge of the land, home, and money, but the fighting was always the men's duty and responsibility.
So in other word..No B.S., just typical historical sexual archetypes.

DragonKnight4431d ago

Just because they weren't taught to, doesn't mean they were unable to and also doesn't mean there couldn't be an explanation for a female lead in the game. But I appreciate your reply as it at least shows you researched what I said.

All I'm saying is, unless the character was a white American character, then there's no reason why the protagonist absolutely had to be male. Plus, this shouldn't even be an issue. No one would have even thought about it if Ubisoft hadn't brought it up.

Sabian1874431d ago

I understand what you're saying, but sadly at that time a woman wouldn't have been taken as seriously as a man would. There weren't many if any uber women warriors at that time.

If you went back in time to the last real female warrior you would come to Saint Joan of Arc and that story didn't really have a happy ending.

I think a female protagonist would be a fresh turn for the series, but given the time period it would just be highly impractical.

This wasn't brought up by Ubisoft. It has been part of a recurring theme of questions.

smashman984431d ago

I got an idea how bout we stop trying to make a big Deal out of nothing, fact is its more historically accurate this wayand thats final. Ubisoft has never said that women cant fight they have had characters in both story mode and multiplayer that were just as skilled as the men.

jony_dols4431d ago (Edited 4431d ago )

John Wilkes Booth , Lee Harvey Oswald, Gavrilo Princip (Murdered Franz Ferdinand & sparked off WW1), Felix Yusupov (an anti-tsarist who disposed of Rasputin) & Marcus Julius Brutus (stabbed Julius Caesar to death).

Notice a trend. Probably history's most famous assassins, & all of which were by men.

AC3 isn't being sexist, it's just being accurate. Well as accurate a game can be, when it is set around a machine that allows you to see into your character's past using DNA, whilst in the process trying to piece together an alien conspiracy involving Templars.

Ascalon944431d ago

yeah but you play as a character in the "white man's world" not in the native american world. Thus there is no issue, because playing as female would feel off in the "man's world" the revolution truly was.

Sleazy journalism at its finest, trying to put words in his mouth that he never said.

This is what he said

"It felt like, if you had all these men in every scene and (a female assassin is) secretly, stealthily in crowds of dudes, it starts to feel kind of wrong. People would stop believing it"

And now its women don't belong in mans world... he said that it would ruin the believabilty of the game as she would be the only women roaming about during a patriarchal time(rule of men)

The headline makes it sound sexist saying women have no place in that society at at all.

Sigh... just move along

Spydiggity4432d ago (Edited 4432d ago )

Give me a break! Such a cheap cop out.

They didn't write in a female lead because they didn't want to invest in the writing for the extra character. at least give me a good excuse. like, "we had too much story to tell."

i'm sure we'll see a female character in the multiple expansion packs that will be disguised as full priced retail games.

EDIT: i'm sure there will be a bunch of comments about how women had a limited role and blah blah. but come on...think about it! that's the best possible way to sneak in a story line. all the sexually/emotionally repressed women looking for a man to care about her orgasm. the possibilities are endless.

RedDead4432d ago

I....what?

ok, they could have easily stuck in some women instead of some of the men. But in reality...yes it was a man's world. America grew up later than the rest of us. So unless they want to have a **** love interest for the new character then no.

taijutsu3634432d ago

Um... did they say there was going to be a female lead?

Cuz that woulda been news to me!

Neo Nugget4432d ago

No, it was just a hope for many people.

That, and Feudal Japan for the setting...

Simon_Brezhnev4432d ago

Well the lil short movie the girl was from China. I rather have it in China than Japan done seen and played to many ninja inspired games set doing feudal Japan.

gamernova4432d ago

They were around...just making sandwiches...

Bathyj4432d ago (Edited 4432d ago )

so what. hes right. it just wouldnt make sense.

why is that a big deal?

ShaunCameron4431d ago

Indeed. It's just that Westerners are freaking obsessed with wanting everything and everybody to be "fair and equal" trying to look "progressive" while still benefiting from the unfairness and inequality that made their society.

Bethesda makes the most consistently stupid NPCs, like really bad... yet I still can't help but love playing their games. Guilty pleasure, I guess. *sigh* 😩

How did redfall not make the cut.

My first thought was the safe rooms in the resident evil series. When you hear that enchanting music you know you’re safe.

Killer2020UK291d ago

I literally just came here to post this. That music in the Resi 1 safe rooms is playing in my head.

Rimeskeem290d ago

I was thinking TLOU work benches. Although I remember one time where it was a false security.

Perfect. 👌👌

I'd add the top of my highrise apartment in GTA Online. That calm, quiet peace, just knowing as soon as I step out that door I will be bombarded by 8 and 12 year olds calling each other n**** and f****, trolled by combat jets and rocket launchers.

The entire map of SotC is peaceful as hell. Used to just ride around exploring it.

mastershredder290d ago (Edited 290d ago )

Afterlife in Cyberpunk 2077 is a peaceful area? Erm, hands down and very hard to miss, Misty Olszewski's Esoterica is the absolute epitome of peaceful areas in that game.

raiden_188290d ago

The "last of us" deer location i found to be a welcoming respite. It was nice to not have someone trying to eat me.

RPGer290d ago

Kingdom Hearts tend to present half peaceful areas and most of them are amazing.

'Assassin’s Creed III': Ten Years Later

With the recent reveal of Assassin’s Creed Mirage and the promise that the series will return to its roots, there hasn’t been a better time to get stuck into Assassin’s Creed’s back catalog, whether it’s replaying an old favorite or getting lost in previously looked-over classic.

Ten years later, we miss the old you, Assassin's Creed.

Popsicle565d ago (Edited 565d ago )

I really enjoyed Assassins Creed 3. My only complaint was that I didn’t enjoy when I had to switch from Connor to Desmond. It’s a personal preference, but Connor’s story was just more fun for me.

On a side note, Black flag was the most enjoyable of the AC games I played.
