5 RPG Series’ I Miss The Most

Trendy Gamers: It is a very good time to be a player of RPGs. Even though at the start of this console generation it had seemed like most of the good RPGs had simply disappeared, RPGs are now abundant in number. Whether you are looking for classic RPG action or newer, more forward thinking RPG action, you can find it on one platform or another. There are however, several RPG series that have seemingly died on us over the years. These are the five RPG series’ that I miss the most.

Rogue Galaxy

Legend of Dragoon

Yeah the Shadow hearts series are great games
Shadow hearts 2 is the best in the series but Shadow hearts 3 has the best combat.

How can I miss when this has been one of the best japanese rpg eras in modern history? with awesome titles on no less than 5 platforms?

Lets look at the companies in question and what awesome stuff theyve done

Level - dragon quest IX, ninokuni, d' arc, inazuma eleven.......

The team who did shadow hearts, went on to do lost oddessy, enough said

grandia team has made a bunch of things but my favorite is the 3ds rpg REXX.

Then we come to capcom - Yes they really dont do rpgs at all anymore, but they have done monster hunter, and 3 games in the megaman battle network series this gen

Breath of Fire, Suikoden (there's a new PSP title, but no port for US), Vakyrie Profile, Wild ARMs, SaGa (Frontier or Romancing) and many others, not to mention the series that are around, but don't deliver anything close to past gens like Star Ocean or Final Fantasy.

suikoden has had 2 new entriesw ( whether the psp game comes to the US is irrelevant big time for now)

a new entry in the valkyrie profile, wild arms, saga series have been made this gen as well as awesome entries in the SO and ff series

Chrono Brake (Break) needs to just happen already.

Another Breath of Fire would be nice, just so long as it doesn't try to be edgy like Dragon Quarter... that game just seems like a complete fumble..

A Next gen Dragon Quest game would be lovely.

Rogue Galaxy 2, although the original's pretty self-contained...

As for people making noise about Legend of Dragoon, seriously, rethink your sh!t. That game is a turd. Completely amateur soundtrack with all sorts of woeful musical mistakes in it. Absolutely awful dialogue, flat characters (with the exception MAYBE of Rose...), derivative, stale storyline (and no I'm not basing that on todays standards, the game just wanted to be it's contemporaries so bad.) and dreadful pacing and poor execution. That game would need a total overhaul if it was going to be remade. Although I'm willing to say the designs of the locations were pretty nice.

Oh and Valkyrie Profile 3 would be nice. Not the biggest fan of those games, but I've still played them all so far, so a third one wouldn't go unplayed.

jeez louise, this has been a fabulous gen for new rpgs from old and new franchises, weve seen entries of old series from past gens in english for the first time in this past gen and still people complain

dont focus on the a single gold tree and miss the forest of silver trees

I could not live without this gen and tactics advance 2, the world ends with you, dq joker, luminous arc, devil survivor, radiant historia, tales of innocence, zhp, trails in the sky or any nyumber of rpgs

I didn't like Jade Cocoon, but Grandia was my favorite RPG on the PSX. It never received a worthy sequel, though the third game came close to being one. Breath of Fire was a wonderful series too until they completely destroyed it with that awful excuse for a game they released on the PS2.

Here are a few game series I'd love to see revived;
1. Grandia
2. Breath of Fire
3. Suikoden
4. Earthbound

I'd like to see FF return to what made it great too.

The author probably should have mentioned that this list pertained only to Japanese and console RPG series.

I would certainly like to see a return to Baldur's Gate, Planescape: Torment, KOTOR and the older style Fallout games. These games had far deeper stories and gameplay than many of the RPG series listed here.

Grandia since Gamearts is still around which is why i am interested in Ragnarok Odyssey.

Legend of Dragoon a remake or a followup really needs to happen.

Legend of Legaia, one similar to the first game not the mediocre sequels.

I miss the entre genre, period. This generation is lackluster in the jRPG department of games. You could count the amount of console RPGs worth buying with a single hand.

With that said, Tales fans say Graces F is a good game.

I would love to see another great Seiken Densetsu (Mana) game that is 2D and similar to the SNES games.

Game Arts also needs to make a new Lunar game instead of re-re-re-releasing the original Lunar again.

KONAMI abandon Suikoden, CAPCOM abandon Breath of Fire, SONY abandon Legend of Dragoon, GAME ARTS abandon Grandia, MEDIA.VISION abandon Wild Arms, NAMCO didnt release out of JPN most of the "Tales of ..." games, SE abandon Chrono Cross/Trigger & ruin Parasite Eve & Final Fantasy series for the past 10+ years...

Now tell me some1 seriously what a veteran in the JRPG scene & PlayStation only owner can expect from the future? the genre is almost dead with some scarce releases here and there divided between all the consoles so if u want to play those rare 1-2 good JRPG on other consoles u must buy all the consoles and all that just to play 1-2 games and if u dont care to play anything else that means u will pay for a console to play 2 games at most...

All those companies that abandon favorite franchise is the reason behind the lack of good JRPG's at the current generation of consoles, few years back they made some of the best JRPG's ever and create a huge fan base and now they turn their back on us, disappointing...

Panzer Dragoon RPG
Skies of Arcadia

and just recently Valkyria Chronicles.

SE also ruined Valkyrie Profile.
Bamco also didn't bring over .hack//Link (PSP).

Although Konami released a new Suikoden, its not part of the True Rune Saga.

With the death of Grandia's creator, I doubt we'll ever see Game Arts makes a sequel to that game. :(

The thumbnail reminds me of finding Shadow Heart II at BestBuy used. I was so excited, but when I got home the disc was split (perfectly) in half as i pulled it out of the case. You could not tell unless you looked behind the disc (where all the data was stored). I was saddened, but they at least let me return it... though I just told them there was a defect with the product. The guy looked inside (didn't take out the disc) and closed it and gave my money back.

Shadow Hearts was a great series, Loved the judgment ring, I thought it was very creative. It was a way to keep me paying attention to battle unlike...QTEs

I miss Wild Arms surprised there is not PS3 title for the game. I also miss Legend Of Dragoon and wish Xenosaga had the last three games finished like it was suppose to be a 6 title game.

I consider Shadow Hearts, Grandia II and Skies of Arcadia to be the finest RPGs I've ever played, and I do not know why there are no sequels to these great games while we get endless number of sequels to games and franchises of lesser quality !
