Twisted Metal review | Edge Magazine

You’ll find a number of technical issues plaguing the game, from scenery clipping to inconsistent collision and some hideously low resolution textures. But the game’s relentless dedication to giving you violent bangs for your bucks goes some way to compensating for them. Because Twisted Metal at its best delivers exactly what it sets out to: a messy, manic and tasteless treat.

Isn't this article a little late to the party?

Kingdom Come4435d ago (Edited 4435d ago )

It depends on your interpretation, some reviewers prefer to take their time with a review in able to offer a decisive outcome on the games online components...

@ Below
You obviously misinterpreted my statement. With the game having had a terrible start in regards to online issues, perhaps they wanted to wait in order to see if those issues where resolved...

BlackTar1874431d ago

then you obviously misunderstood me. I was lol'ing at how there is only 3 reviewers who are willing to do a full job in a review.

Sorry thought that was painfully obvious but i guess not.

StraightPath4435d ago (Edited 4435d ago )

It was fun for short time the non sense carnage. The three story modes are faily short, but feel repititive after awhile. Other then that your just left with online multiplayer the best aspect of this game. For people who like this kinda game or twisted metal fans will like this game. Other then that this doesnt really offer much. 6/10 seems fair..

CernaML4435d ago

Nobody just likes fun in video games anymore it seems. :(

After a 7/10 on Journey Edge predictably underrates another PS3 exclusive with 6/10.. the same damn story for 5 years from them. The sad part is the amount of people that actually believe Edge doesn't have any bias.

coolbeans4435d ago (Edited 4435d ago )

-"After a 7/10 on Journey, Edge predictably underrates another PS3 exclusive..."

Edge gave it a 8/10. You may still have time to edit that part.

-"The sad part is the amount of people that actually believe Edge doesn't have any bias."

I'm not exactly sure what the other people say, but I've tried to point out the fact that EVERYONE has a biased opinion. Whenever people attack Edge, I'm constantly pleading with posters to prove their team is biased against the PS3 by pointing it out in the context of their reviews for PS3 exclusives, instead of superficially determining it by racking up a bunch of scores and comparing it to metacritic.

Ironically, that mentality is what has brought us the whole "high score" debacle we have today. Most posters seem to grow tired of the instant 9/10 or 10/10 handouts many sites give, yet lash out against the first reviewer to award an anticipated PS3 exclusive a score lower than that. I wasn't here in '08, but I could just imagine the reaction the SDF had when they awarded MGSIV a 8/10.

I'm not saying Edge is perfect; they're far from it (just look at their 7/10 Doom review back in 1993). If there's proof of unfair bias that's consistent with PS3 exclusives and is shown through meticulously grabbing their words and disproving them, I'll be on the fanboy's side. Until then, I'll keep saying that Edge are just fairly-methodical critics that like to use the whole 1-10 scale, not just hipsters who like to denounce PS3 games.

rob60214435d ago (Edited 4435d ago )

I double checked, Journey got a 8/10, still at 8/10 it is the second lowest score on metacritic for the game; clearly lower than the rest of the media.

Pay close attention to Exibit A: https://skydrive.live.com/v...
Look at the Chart to the right, these numbers are real, the math is real, it all checks out. As you can see Edge isn't even close to being comparable to other game review sites as far as being platform agnostic.(by a factor of almost 6x)

These reviewers have a lot of sway in how games are perceived and whether they fail or succeed. We take them at face value to be unbiased and expect them to give fair reviews (we expect them to have journalistic integrity lol). I don't see what's wrong with pointing out a review site's history, what their record is - so that people can make their own opinion based on that. It's not really fair to just wipe clean a consistent record of bias against the PS3 - then have people believe 6/10 might be a fair score for that game.

Edge is put on metacritic and it's clear they unfairly lower scores on that number, without anyone being the wiser as to what actually caused those scores to average out. Maybe I am defending Sony, but in this case quite frankly they deserve to be defended.

trouble_bubble4435d ago

Not so much about the words as the numbers. They forgave an awful lot in Crackdown 2 for example to give it an 8/10, the same score as the infinitely more polished and refined Uncharted:DF, GOW3, and even BioShock if you want a multiplat example. Higher still than Heavy Rain, inFamous2, Killzone 2, Resistance 3, GT5. That's big props for a game that killed the franchise.

coolbeans4435d ago (Edited 4435d ago )

@rob6021

Sigh...I guess you missed the ". . .superficially determining it by racking up a bunch of scores and comparing it to metacritic" part of my comment? I have seen exhibit A, and with a sound mind have determined that to not be enough evidence to prove Edge has a purposeful inclination to degrade all PS3 games. You have a right to defend the score of each PS3 game you so choose, but not by bashing someone else's well-articulated opinion.

I love how some posters can still go along with this BS, despite admitting their reviews are (usually) well-written.

@trouble_bubble

First, Uncharted: DF is the farthest thing from polished on the gameplay side.

Second, Your evidence is purely anecdotal (and just a slight rank below rob's piece). They also gave LBP a 10/10. A much higher score than Heavy Rain, inFamous2, Killzone 2, Resistance 3, GT5.

rob60214434d ago

Well right now metacritic is the about the best we got for game review averages, and it's weighed heavily in the industry. I know it's not perfect; but I'd hardly call my effort superficial. You have a right to your opinion. The chart is not proving any kind of motive (nor did I suggest it did), it's proving that the site gives better scores to 360 exclusive games than PS3 ones compared to what other websites give; and yes I think it does a good job of actually proving that. I don't believe there is anything 'superficial' using the facts.

Honestly I don't care how well written something is if the person is doing a disservice to gamers in the process. I don't even read much of their reviews, my concerns were about their scores they give - and how those scores mislead people. Most people look at the scores, and base their decision from there. The score represents how a title compares to other games.

ginsunuva4435d ago

You have to +2 to any ps3 exclusive for edge.

coolbeans4434d ago

As great as LBP is, it's not a 12/10.

coolbeans4434d ago

-"The chart is not proving any kind of motive (nor did I suggest it did), it's proving that the site gives better scores to 360 exclusive games than PS3 ones compared to what other websites give; and yes I think it does a good job of actually proving that."

Make no mistake about it, I'm not saying Edge hasn't had a history of giving 360 exclusives a higher score; the number are right there. What I'm challenging is the TRANSLATION PS3 fanboys make from this. I'm so thankful you're mindful enough not to instantly assume motive.

Since we have a set of questionable numbers to run on, now the question becomes "why?" The first thing I'm curious about is how consistent they are in giving out higher score to games with more bang for your buck. Since all 3 of Bungie's Halos offer 4 player co-op (both splitscreen and online), wouldn't that give them a slight edge for every PS3 fps that fails to even give co-op features (KZ2)? Does anyone bother to read the reviews to find out?

Since hardly any fanboys looks at their reviews with a fresh pair of eyes, they rarely try to dwell on these simple questions because giving a site the bias stamp is much easier.

-"I don't even read much of their reviews, my concerns were about their scores they give - and how those scores mislead people."

Ignorance of how they grade is the viewer's fault. What's so misleading about a 6/10 from them? According to their grading system, that means it's an 'above average' game. Any car combat gamer will pick this up in a heartbeat, since there's so few of them this gen. Edge shouldn't be blamed for other blindly looking at the score, instead of the context.

It's ironic for people to do that considering they're not even posted on the front page of their site. The only spot the score is given today is at the very end of the review in about the same font as the text. This should be sort of telling as to what their review team really want you to focus on.

I really wish Jaffe would stop being a pussy and at least attempt to create a AAA game again.

All I ask for is a new Twisted Metal that allows flat screen & PSVR2 cross play that also supports a wheel.
Would be heaven.

Babadook7297d ago

Wow. I like the idea of VR twisted metal with a wheel.

Rebel_Scum297d ago

They need to get the enemy AI balance right. Thats what made 2 the best in the series. Black was abysmal in that dept.

neomahi297d ago

You don't. Do sequels. If you've gotta reboot, might as well do a new IP. God of War is the only game I can say that did a successful reboot

TiredGamer297d ago (Edited 297d ago )

Isn’t the new GoW just a sequel technically?

I personally think they can leverage the roots of the series. The original TM in 1995 took place on Christmas Eve 2005, and it was the 10th contest in history. Why not “reboot” the franchise by making a prequel of sorts showing the origin story of the series and maybe linking all the future games in a brilliant way. Seems like such an obvious idea to leverage old with the new (kind of look how Doom 2016 did with its lore).

Knightofelemia297d ago

Just make it a good game Twisted Metal has it's fan base.

PlayStation confirm they are working on Twisted Metal series

The rumours were legit. The Twisted Metal franchise is coming back, Sony
officially announced at CES 2022.

NecrumOddBoy860d ago

I hope this is camp as all hell.

bouzebbal859d ago

They should have made Destruction All star with a Twisted Metal skin as launch title.. With some more content of course.

NecrumOddBoy858d ago (Edited 858d ago )

Rumor mill is that the team used All Stars as a test bed game to make a PS5 Twisted Metal in the future. No idea why they made this though. Total miss and it could hurt them in the end. Twisted Metal is really awesome. I honestly hope they take this series the Forza Horizon route. Maybe a big open world like a destroyed city in an apocalyptic setting. Still can have arenas and races, battles etc, but also add RPG elements and quests, challenges etc.

Dirtnapstor858d ago

Agreed. I am mildly surprised they did not do a Twisted Metal iteration vs DAS. Could have easily reskinned everything, no?

sourOG859d ago

Agreed. I’m playing serious Sam now and I think it’s awful in a great way. I’m enjoying it.

Majin-vegeta860d ago

Looks like the new game is pretty much confirmed now.

Bobertt859d ago

Idk David Jaffe had said he has seen stuff about the TV show but Sony has never told him anything about a new game. I find it hard to believe they would not tell the creator of the franchise they were going to make a new game.

Army_of_Darkness858d ago

Sony owns the franchise and Jaffe is no longer associated with them anymore, so Sony doesn't have to inform him on anything really...

NapalmSanctuary857d ago

...says f2p with Lucid developing. Might wanna keep them expectations low.

isarai860d ago

I hope it follows the gameplay style of hardware rivals, seriously that game was awesome to play

Godmars290859d ago

How about having to race through a destructible city with tons of people to mow down.

burnout with rocket launchers and ability to drive on skyscraper roofs or through office floors.

DarXyde859d ago

That sounds like Carmageddon meets Warhawk.

I'm iffy on reviving Twisted Metal personally. I replayed it on PS3 via PSOne classics because I loved the originals and I must say, these titles haven't aged well. We're now two generations removed from then, which was already 1-2 generations removed from the originals.

There needs to be some serious modernization efforts for these games to do well.

Godmars290858d ago

@DarXyde:
And what would be wrong with a "Carmageddon meets Warhawk" game? Pretty much what you'd want of a PS5 version of a PS1 title.

NapalmSanctuary857d ago

@Godmars Thats not Twisted Metal. Its one thing to do something like that with an alt game mode but Twisted Metal already has an identity. The gameplay needs to stay true to it.

--Onilink--859d ago

The only thing confirmed by Sony so far was a TV series, not a game

Neonridr859d ago

that's great, looking forward to some next gen destruction!

TheDoomedGuy859d ago

Imagine how it'll feel with the dual sense.

--Onilink--859d ago

I get the feeling that most people arent really reading the article. The only thing confirmed by Sony is the TV series.

Anything about a new game is just rumors and speculation at this point
