I played the UT demo on PC and it was average. I was not a fan of their vehicles and how they worked and the limited weapons.

I definitely liked the fake death, halo 4 better include that.
Also, the 3 maps in the demo seemed like they were designed well.

Overall, I do not see unreal doing well, especially on xbox, owners are already spoiled with halo 3 and cod 4.

Mass Effect has only sold 700k copies, and its actually been advertised. UT3 is a niche game. Most xbots are drones for Halo and Cod4. I don't see people in between that going to 'arcadey' UT3 to get their FPS fix. Halo does the job well enough.

Well now it depends on what you like. CoD4 is great fun and has given me hours of enjoyment, but so has Halo 3. You guys should stop running after a myth. In the US, the 360 version is the clear favorite. No doubt about that. It might even be on a global level (or say, US&EU), because of the shooter genre still selling better on the 360 (IMO). But please, respect different markets. Just as an example: AC sold more units on the PS3 in Europe last week, then it did sell on the 360 in the US (163K vs. 125k).

The European market is growing, it seems, and the numbers are pointing towards the PS3 in that territory. Even CoD4 is a head to head race.

Saying, UT3 didn't sell in the US, well, yes, maybe. But it is comparable to AC (44k) and close enough to CoD4 (58K) with its 41K (right behind). These numbers are roughly tripled in Europe, BTW (which is strange, because the total install base is about the same). And maybe it is save to assume, these might hold true for UT3.

I would be very surprised, if UT3 would sell like Halo3 or even CoD4 (or AC) on launch day - on the 360. Certainly not like H3 (what was that ? 1 or 2 M incl. preorders ?). It might sell more on launch on the 360, but I predict it will sell head to head with the PS3 version afterwards. And then, they have to clear the "mod-question" on the 360, first (and clearly communicate that before launch).

Mark Reign has and always said that the 360 version is going just fine. That they have an undisclosed issue with Microsoft that has been speculated to be due to User Generated Content.

That is why Reign said Sony was easier to work with in that aspect.

The 360 version was never on 'the back burner' But Epic realizes that $ $3,000,000 is $3,000,000, which they made from the PS3 alone. Businesses like to make money. Why not release the PC/PS3 version, and then the 360 version. It isn't like they will be losing any money doing so.

People are still going to buy the game, if they are UT3 fans. And there isn't a window of release for games. UT3 will be out for years to come. Epic is in no dire need of the cashflow from all the engine licensing they do.

That is why Keyboard & mouse are supported on the PS3 for this game. Besides that PS3 controller vs. X360 controller is about the same. They both have EXACT same number of buttons, both fit well in hand as well. I have played with both controllers and there is nothing on either controller that really hinders anything. Buttons are almost in exact same areas. Only real difference is D-pad and Left Stick/L3 are swapped.

While its good that Microsoft spent millions in advertising for halo, very few game titles are going to get the advertising barrage that Halo did. Don't expect every game to sell millions out the gate. Except for Worldwide favorites.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Not every game on the 360 is going to blow up right out of the gate and thats even with advertising on its side. Mass Effect had a HUGE advertising campaign that was even tacked on with Battlestar Galactica Razor with Sci-Fi....still only sold 700k in total so far.

A great number, but not even close to Halo. But why? Well, thats simple! Microsoft did something that I, in my opinion, find extremely retarded and that was "they pulled a Nintendo". Meaning they threw all of their time and effort in to a 1st party title and pretty much left all of the 3rd party devs to fend for themselves in ads.

Also, the actual dollar amount in advertising that Halo 3 received was actually more like....$250 million. First week sales of Halo 3 didn't even recoup the loss in advertising money let alone development costs....they are STILL trying to pay off that bill and MGS has yet to reach the black when it comes to profits, but when they throw all of their eggs in to a single basket that kinda what I expect to happen.

This is one thing I can say that I actually like Sony for and that is they don't really let one single game hog the spotlight from any other game. They have TV spots for 1st party exclusives sure, but Sony also put out two 3rd party advertisements themselves in their successful "PS3 Universe' TV spots to show those helpful and loyal 3rd party devs some air time love.

From what I read it was only a $10M marketing plan for the launch of Halo 3. Halo 3 is the game that put Microsoft's game division in the green, definitely not in the red. I don't know where on earth you read that the marketing was $250M, but its just plain wrong.

The total cost of the game was $250 million.
Advertising WAS only $10 million.

HOWEVER, MGS still reports a negative margin in financial status. They have yet to get a black mark at all. Ever. And considering that they have done nothing but consistently LOST money ever since the creation of the first Xbox I doubt they could ever EVER recoup any of that total loss.

It's pretty obvious why PS3 version outsold the PC counterpart. First, you have to consider piracy, UT3 was probably pirated to death on the PC, and at the moment PS3 piracy is not really possible. Second, UT3 is a gorgeous looking game and what better way to experience it than playing it at full settings. A lot of PCs don't have that kind of horsepower, and hence the PS3 version is a better alternative to upgrading (although of course, on a very high end PC you can up the resolution and it will look better than PS3).

The next issue is sales. UT3 so far is only selling in the americas, as soon as it hits UK the sales figures will jump and the PS3 version will undoubtedly sell > 1 million by year end 2008 (not sure about PC though). I think EPIC, if anything, should have done a simultaneous worldwide release, that way you'd see the community gain momentum much faster. Releasing this on PS3 first was a good idea as the competition on PS3 for first person shooters is not an issue, however obviously COD4 stole a lot of the thunder. The 360 already has Halo 3, COD4, and maybe Gears keeping people online. Bring this game to 360 will probably give higher sales in NA, but not in UK, as they have a greater UT fan base (various online sources). Nevertheless, most people don't go on gaming websites, and 360 owners will not think they are getting the "shaft", quite the contrary they will see it as a nice addition to an already great game library.

Final words, I've tried UT3, and it seems that it's the same game from about 3 years ago, only with bumped up visuals and some new modes. Definitely not something to get too excited over. It is fun though, and it offers something in terms of speed and carnage that other shooters don't. Personally, I'd wait to see how Haze turns out, or KZ2, although that's far away, and to satisfy current PS3 FPS needs, the choice would probably be between HAZE and UT3. Anyways, sorry for the long post, I post like 1nce a month.

Since when has anyone mentioned the double standard regarding VGChartz?

I've never ever EVER seen a Sony "fandroid" contest the numbers at VG Chartz when it showed the PS3 console sales down and out. I for one have never contested their authenticity. However, I do constantly see Xbox fans decrying VGchartz numbers A FREAKIN' LOT now that the PS3 is being shown in the higher numbers above the 360 world wide.

I remember back in May and June of 07 when the PS3 was selling horribly and N4G would have constant news articles of Vg Chartz numbers "proving" that the PS3 was a failure and would never ever recover. Funny how 6 months changes the playing field isn't it.

Gears in '08 is a longshot. I can see it happening though, since Epic would just be tweaking and refining IMO. God of War however, will be '09 at the earliest since it has to be made from scratch.

The 360 already has a couple of FPS slated around that time period. I doubt UT3 will sell, especially with its slight similarity to Halo. Alot of developers have stated that the PS3 is fair game as far as FPS go because there aren't too many of them on the PS3 yet.(Infinity Ward, Free Radical)

Plus, like someone mentioned GTA4 is coming out around that time period. Especially with the popularity of GTA in america, I doubt anyone'll be saying "hey, you got that unreal tournament 3?"

I read the comments sometimes on N4G and read about some of those fanboy wars.

That made me wonder: why would someone right in their mind support a company that wants first and foremost to become a monopoly (releasing a console every 3-4 years, pulling the plug on previous hardware to force sheeps to waste even more money) even if that means releasing hardware that fails 30-40% of the time and spending an extra billion for supporting it?

Am I the only one who cares enough about the gaming industry not to encourage a company that has this business model? Consoles should not become PCs where they are obsolete within 3-4 years and require 14 upgrades during their lifespan.

When I shopped for my next console, I said NO to the Red Ring of Death. Case closed.

Besides, UT3 looks fun. I'm planning on purchasing it, I hope it's like UT99; this one rocked!

the truth is Epic gambled that the ps3 owners all wanted this game because ps3 desperately needs that big blockbuster shooter, unfortunately for them, COD4 is much better, other than the name COD4 is a fresh new IP (NOT of the WW2 variety) that wowed many people and got everyone excited, while UT3 even with all the mod hype just seems like a clone of a former UT with better graphics, it didn't offer any gameplay/features that exceed its predecessors, all Mark Rhein kept hyping was mods this, mods that, mods are cool but in the end they have deliver, so far its been like "meh we'll get to it", bottom line is UT3 never got people excited. So in essence UT3 was doomed from the very begining on 2 fronts, ps3 games already don't sell very well and even the ps3 version of COD4 drew more attention before and after UT3 was released. I kind of feel the same way for the 360 version, unless they add some "meat and potatoes" I'm not interested in UT3.

also for those who say, "well this isn't the movies, games don't need to sell a mil the first day", yes thats true, but 95% of the time if a game doesn't have *strong/huge sales out of the gate, they usually continue to decline month to month, and they usually don't do well in the sales dept., sure they will eventually sell a modest/decent amount overtime, but the thing is after several months of poor sells the game will be sold at discounted prices, followed by bargain bin prices, so most of it sells won't come at the *premium $60 price, so selling about 100k in a month, then less and less each following month with small spikes here and there just won't result in the expected profits that devs were looking for.

The Xbox 360 and PC versions basically share about 80 to 90 percent of the codes. That's the good thing about 360/Windows development -- the codes can be easily ported from one platform to another.

The PC version is already done, so Epic could just easily transfer the codes over to Xbox 360 -- that's at least 80% of the coding work done right there.
