GAME Closes, Hopefully GameStop is Next

GAME is an outlet to trade in unwanted video games and perhaps pick up a second hand bargain, similiar to EBGames, Play 'N Trade or the ever popular in the US, GameStop....interesting that most journalists that have covered this story add a very spitefull "...and good riddance!" to their tag lines. Why such animosity for a supposedly fun place to go to purchase fun items like video games?

Why would you want a store to close? A bunch of people will loose their jobs. If you dont like Gamestop for what ever reason, go to a different place to buy games.

DontShoot-Me-Bro4433d ago

By your logic, the store will ultimately close, if you are telling people don't buy from them, buy from another store.

The store should either become competitive with other store prices or simply close.

brodychet4433d ago

Not necessarily. He didn't say everyone should stop going, because not everyone hates gamestop. I'm still an avid customer. I don't think Gamestop will be leaving quite yet. Unless digital gaming revolutionizes in a big step.

lastdual4433d ago (Edited 4433d ago )

No, there is room in the market for multiple retailers. And your argument supposes that the only factor people consider when buying is price, which just isn't true.

Price is powerful, but some buyers may value the convenience of having a store nearby. Other customers are not strictly "gamers", such as a parent buying a game for their kid, and they may want the advice that store reps can offer, etc.

There's no sense is desiring a monopoly in which only the biggest, high volume retailer that can therefore offer the deepest discounts exists. Why champion the Walmart effect?

SilentNegotiator4433d ago

Gamestop is a great place to shop for new copies of new games. I'm not going to go online to save $5 when I can drive 5 minutes to the nearest store and get it as soon as I want to.

Other local stores don't carry all of the games, enough copies, and/or don't keep up with price drops.

If you don't want to sell your used games there, don't. Gamestop offers you speed, the internet offers you a few more bucks (maybe).

And my local Gamestop has very nice, helpful employees. I'm sorry if you've had bad experiences, but yours doesn't equate to all Gamestops.

A typical experience for me ay my local 'Stop:
1) I enter the store after a 5- minute drive (because they're conveniently placed) and get a nice "Hello" or "Welcome to Gamestop"
2) I look for a game. They ask me if they can help me. If I need it, I ask for it and they do. If I don't need it, they tell me to let them know If I do.
3) I find the game I'm searching for, I bring it to the counter.
4) They ask me if I found everything okay. They ask if I want to preorder anything. If I say no, they drop it.
5) They thank me for my business and tell me to have a great day.
6) I go home, pop my game in, and have a great day.

Dee_914432d ago

i met and had relations with a gamestop employee so gamestop is all good with me :)
Also they had skate 2 for $15 when everywhere else even amazon had it for $30
So say what you want about them ... i lost track of what i was saying .. i need to find her number

why would you want that? alot of people will be unemployed and there will be less choice for consumers idiot article written by a idiot.

mcstorm4433d ago

I agree with you. I have never been a big fan of game but i was a fan of gamestation as i worked there in 2003 and i do think game have messed up what gamestation was about back then when game picked them up. I now see game and game station as the same the trading is more or less the same and the prices are more or less the same where back when i worked for them they were always trying to out do each other.

With places like hmv argos asda tesco ect now selling games they are cheaper than both game and gamestation and this is what is killing them. Game have around 10 thousand staff and we have enough unemployed people as it is in the uk and this many extra is not good. Game and game station do need cut down on there shops though if you look at manchester they have 4 games and one gamestation in the city centre and that is far too many. Game and gamestation need to go back to being against each other and go back to what they were both good at back in 2003 and they will start to get people back in there shops.

caseh4432d ago (Edited 4432d ago )

@Straightpath

When a store thats known for selling within its speciality (games) can't compete with a catalougue shop like Argos as far as prices are concerned it tells me two things:

A: They have no respect for their target demographic
B: They should address the fact that you cant do business like that

Since GAME bought Gamestation there has been no direct competition. Virgin, Zavvi, HMV, super markets none of these were ever direct competition.

On top of that they buy in that much stock from the publishers that they can afford to not overcharge as they have been doing for years. Then they slap the publisher in the face by buying back pre-owned games for peanuts and reselling them.

This is a store that pricematches...but they won't pricematch their own website. Regardless of what people think in terms of high street presence, they deserve to burn. If someone takes their place thats absolutely fine with me, they've had their reign and ultimately hung themselves with their own sh*tty business practice.

Don't bleat to me about job losses, been there done that. the countries economy isn't the point here. Any consumer with an ounce of knowledge would never have seen GAME as a choice to begin with.

MEsoJD4433d ago

I'll never buy games from gamestop ever again. That said gamestop can burn for all I care.

Dazel4433d ago

Because he a complete talentless idiot, lame article with a very misleading title. As of today, Game group is still trading, although it may not be for long. While some folk do hate the company the poor souls who work there, most under 25yrs, will have a real hard time finding future employment. In the UK there are more than a million under 25s out of work, I don't envy them one bit.

showtimefolks4433d ago

we should not be happy that many will loose their jobs. say what you want but i kind of like gamestop maybe that's because my best friend works there and can hook me up with ME3 CE even though it was sold out

princejb1344432d ago

You do know they only get the same amounts of collectors edition as people who preordered it

OCEANGROWNKUSH4432d ago (Edited 4432d ago )

I have two gamestops within a mile of my home. I am a frequent shopper there, the employees are very nice, helpful, and even a couple cute gamer chicks work there. (they know their shit)

I never trade my games in, i sell them on ebay/craigslist like anybody with half a brain does... They offer used games and even have a great return policy so if i dont like the game i can bring it back and get all of my money back.

So if gamestop closes where do you suggest i shop for games? I live on long island and do not know of any "mom and pop" gaming shops around anymore... am i supposed to shop at best buy and walmart as if that is supposed to be any better?? I hate waiting for things to come in the mail so unless theres a great "deal" i try to avoid online shopping.

Hayabusa 1174432d ago

The store rakes in loads of money from second hand game sales that the publishers and devs won't ever see. Dev studios close down because of shops like Game and Gamestop. People loose jobs everywhere. It's life. it's a competition. Deal with it.

OCEANGROWNKUSH4432d ago

If gamestop didnt sell used games people would still sell them on Ebay/craigslist. So gamestop closing is not solving anything for the developers. That is life, as a consumer we reserve the right to resell ANYTHING we buy.

I understand we are only "licencing" the software but obviously we reserve the right to sell that license by law. These are the advantages of living in a free market.

The solutions are this;

A. Lower the price of new games (fat chance)
B. Implement an online pass system (for online games)
C. Give us more replay value (for single player games)
D. Go 100% digital (death of gaming as we know it)

The problem's lie with the game companies themselves... They rush a broken game to stores with a 4 hour story mode and a tacked on multiplayer component and expect it to do well...

JohnnyMann4204432d ago

I personally like my Gamestop. My Gamestop used to be FuncoLand #1. People that started GI worked with those stores and most of those guys are still there. Andy Mac is the Senior Editor and Reiner is still great.

I have been to other Gamestop's that have had some a-holes working there, it wasn't a good experience.

The ones in Eden Prairie MN (There are 2 of them) are top notch. The dudes have been there forever and all of them know gaming. Hell I have chilled with them and talked games for 1/2 hour or so.

Gamestop is good in my eyes but only when their employees give a crap and are fun going.

The one in Shakopee, MN (near Savage) is not a great experience. Most of the employees there are grumpy, talk about themselves (rather than games for some reason) seem cracked out and don't take their jobs very seriously.

C-Thunder4433d ago

That's not been my expereince, my wife works at gamestop and they're all just nice people trying to make a living.

"I'll never forget what a mother said when just trying to buy a couple games for her kids about the pushy and aggressive business behavior. I mean sure i've been in sales, and to ask the courious 3 times in different ways for an upgrade is were I would personally draw the line that this was a non-upgradeable customer. But when a pushy angry 'senior' game advisor is at the healm, there's no saying no unless you just go. I remember watching this occur and hearing the nice mother who finally agreed, then looked at me and simply said, "This place is horrible."

Bad Gamestop.

JerryMatters4433d ago

Yes it is kind of like trying to get out of Quentin Tarntino's HOSTILE to leave with a new or used game from GameStop with both of your eyes still intact.

BattleTorn4433d ago (Edited 4433d ago )

Are the Gamestop employees where you live on commission?

I've never seens a "pushy" saleman in Gamestop.

I've seen bias, and unknowledgable, but never aggressive.

dumahim4433d ago

I never go to GameStop anymore. Haven't for years. I've had terrible experiences the last 4-5 times I went in. Here's some examples. These are also different locations and each incident is a different employee.

1. Midnight release for FFXII, employee kept pushing me to pre-order more stuff depsite the fact I had over $1000 stuff already pre-ordered, including Wii and PS3. He tried about 6 times and even flat out said, "You need to pre-order more stuff." How many times does a customer need to say "no thanks" before they'll accept it? Sent complaint to corporate, they never replied, I cancelled all pre-orders except the two consoles.

2. Went in to pre-order MGS4 (stupid GS pre-order exclusive, relevant for later) and MGS Collection (Best Buy didn't have it), only one guy working. The guy was ripping the PS3 and how stupid it is. Said he laughs when people buy one. Then asked if I wanted to pre-order for 360 or PS3 and then laughed when I said PS3. When getting MGS Collection from behind the couter, he tries to tell me it won't work on my PS3. After trying to explain it, he finally asks which PS3 I have and when I said 60GB, "Oh, well I guess it might work."

3. Picking up MGS4 pre-order stuff before the game came out as it was an invite to Metal Gear Online beta test that weekend. I had called earlier and someone said they were in and ready to pick up. When I got there later that night, the employee said I couldn't get pre-order stuff until I pick up the game. I point out the advertisements all around the store for the promotion, and the fact that it was THAT WEEKEND for the beta test, what would be the point of getting it when the game came out? After battling with him for a couple minutes, someone in plain clothes near the counter chimes in and says he's been giving them out all day. The other employee finally relents and says to him, "ok fine. I don't agree with it, but I'll get in to that later."

The employees represent the company they work for, and if these types of employees are acceptable for them, I want nothing to do with such company.

Commander_TK4433d ago

There r some, but none that I've encountered. Last time I was there, I bought Batman: AC which was on sale and the guy was really cool there.

trenso14433d ago

me neither the people at my gamestop a friendly and recognize me as walk in. they never push pre-orders. they may ask you twice if you have in store credit you arent using but never pushy about it.

princejb1344432d ago

Nope they don't get commission
They push for pre orders and the stupid subscription for game informer because they have to
If they don't get the minimum amount they ask for by the end of the end of their shift, they get written up

LOGICWINS4433d ago (Edited 4433d ago )

At the Gamestop closest to me, this dude kept asking me if I wanted to pre-order 4 different games. And when I kept saying no, he was like "Are you going to let me finish or what?!" with an attitude. I was like, "Is this guy seriously catching an attitude with me?" So I just left.

But not ALL people at Gamestops are like that. In others, they go as far as to call OTHER GS stores for you to help you find your game.

Monokhs4433d ago

the one where i live is pretty good, they have never tried forcing a subscription on me, all i do is say no once and thats it.

thats happened to me before, the employee called another gamestop to see if they had the game i wanted which i thought was pretty cool

jeeves864433d ago

But you did cop an attitude with him - you probably interrupted him. So obviously he took offense to that, and you took offense to him taking offense.

A lot of people don't know if they've done something wrong, ever. If he said "are you going to let me finish" with an attitude, it kind of seems like you were cutting him off. Which is rude, and sometimes rude behaviour requires a rude response.

maniacmayhem4433d ago

Go to any retail store over the years and your bound to run into one or two employees having a bad day. To say Gamestop is filled with just these employees is insane. The Gamestop I go to have friendly and very helpful employees.

I hope Gamestop never goes out of business because one its a convenient place to purchase back catalog games and two I would never want to see anyone unemployed.

C-Thunder4433d ago

Gamestop is a megacorporation with 1000's of stores across the country, there's bound to be a d-bag or two working for them, it doesn't mean the entire company is bad.

Am I the only one who thinks Game going extinct is bad news for our turf? I think dedicated game shops should exist.

killerhog4433d ago (Edited 4433d ago )

agree. but they should exist everywhere. i do not like digital media and still want hard copies of the stuff i buy. digital media just means the publisher (or creator) has more control over it than you.

for example, i bought an ipod game for 1.99 (to avoid ads) a few months later, it gets taking off the appstore, resurfaces, and get plagued by ads for a game i payed 1.99 for, but now is "free".

i notice a lot of developers and publishers for digital media are introducing "license agreement" im sure ya can guess what that means.

kma2k4433d ago

from my understanding they arent going to close. Just "game" is going to close then next week or in a few weeks they will reopen with new employees under a new name. Not 100% sure about that but thats what ive been reading?!?

monkey nuts4433d ago (Edited 4433d ago )

GameStop Boss Says Disc Drives Should Be Required On Game Consoles

"It would be great if people had to buy more of the thing," says guy who makes money selling the thing.

XiNatsuDragnel240d ago

Absolutely consoles needs disc drives.

wesnytsfs240d ago

Nah should be optional. Not a PS fan but I like their strategy of selling an optional external optical drive. Its all about Options and this will let everyone get their way. Cheaper for digital only and then you can chose to pay more for the optical drive if that is important to you.

Profchaos240d ago

That's not official yet it's only a rumour

Eonjay239d ago

@Profchaos

But what he describes already exists in the 2 base models. If it is a rumor you can blame Microsoft for really backing it in court but if we are honest we all know it's true.

Profchaos239d ago

@Eonjay I'm not denying the appeal of it I can see it being a useful mechanism for allowing gamers to upgrade as needed however until there's concrete proof and not speculation and remember ms still bases that court submitted document off of the same leaks we see on Reddit, 4chan etc I just can't believe it.

The system would be further opened to exploitation and they would need to release an overpriced drive for consumers to buy for it and sure as they do we will hear complaints over the cost of it

ChasterMies239d ago

Absolutely consoles don’t need disc drives. My house has 2 PS5 digital editions, one since launch. Zero issues with the lack of disc drives. In fact, the digital purchasing lets us all share each other’s games, usually mine, and play the same game at the same time on-line.

shadowT240d ago

Optional drives would be best strategy.

-Foxtrot240d ago

If they did then collectors wouldn’t be getting f***** over with discless collectors editions

jeromeface239d ago

yea they would, discs cost extra... even when you're already paying a premium

-Foxtrot239d ago (Edited 239d ago )

Lmao

We are paying roughly the same now without the discs. There’s literally collectors editions which are roughly in the same price range that have a disc.

I’d rather pay a little more for something physical anyway

RupeeHoarder240d ago

No shock, GameStop is alive because of trading. If they don't have used games on their shelves they are absolutely donezo.

darthv72240d ago

Well of course the GS boss thinks this... that's their bread and butter business. That and funco pops and clothing, though those two were added as a means to supplement the decline in people buying used games or even new games. GS just sucks overall when it comes to gaming. I buy my physical stuff on Amazon or Best Buy.

As for "requiring" disc drives... nah. Not anymore, but i like having them as an option. They had a means back when games actually ran off the discs and were more/less complete. Now they are incomplete and the disc is really an installer with a license to play. If you want to change games you have to take out the disc and put in another. Its more convenient to just use digital. I have been into digital for years now and when the PSPortal comes along i wont even have to go into my game room. I will just play my PS5 from my couch downstairs. I have a bunch of digital installed games to my 5... I'm all set.

Likely a combination...

itsmebryan268d ago

@hyper
Gamepass and I have a gaming PC so, I can play all the Sony "exclusives " at a higher frame rate and graphical fidelity. Why would I trade my Xbox for PS5.

After adding ABK they will have even more games at a great value.

Lexreborn2268d ago

@bryan

By that same logic what would be the point of having an Xbox? If you have a pc that handles both ps5 and Xbox games you don’t need either.

Rockstar268d ago

@ Lex,

Bringing logic into it?
That's low!

itsmebryan267d ago

@lex
I got my gaming PC last year to replace my old PC and I already had a XSX. It's pretty simple.
So, Zero horizon was disappointing and Spiderman/ miles ( got both for $50)are just ok. I might get R&C when it goes on sale.

Zhipp267d ago

@Hypertension
If I had time for a PS5 I would have bought a PS5 by now. I intend to someday, but at the moment my backlog is too big. Not only would I have to trade in all my games (for pennies on the dollar) and rebuy them for PS5, but Xbox actually finally has some exclusives coming out in the near future that interest me. I'll get a PS5 whenever Naughty Dog's next game comes out, at the latest.

Not even close to all the Playstation games is being released on PC, and if they are, it's years past release, and often in a state when PC masterrace people cries anyways.
By logic, you should have a PS5, a PC and maybe a Switch if you're into that crap.

Especially as 100% of the Xbox games is also release on the PC, day and day.

itsmebryan268d ago

@jin-Sakai
What games are you looking forward to this year?

Jin_Sakai267d ago

Spider-Man 2 and there’s plenty of great games to play that released over the years. Can’t say the same for Xbox.

DarXyde267d ago (Edited 267d ago )

There's a pretty decent slate of games coming out this year for all platforms. Armored Core looks great, Mortal Kombat 1 looks great, the info we're getting on Tekken 8 has me thinking it's coming this year. Sea of Stars can't be slept in either. If we're just talking about PlayStation games, Spider-Man 2 and Stellar Blade are expected to release this year and both look great.

I believe jin-sakai has an Xbox Series X (I could be wrong), but I reckon they're interested in those games, along with Starfield. That aside, Mario Wonder, Super Mario RPG, Star Ocean, and Suikoden I and II are all very welcome titles for the rest of the year.

I think no matter what platform you're playing on, there's enough there to generate a backlog.

EDIT: How the hell did I forget Lies of P? 🤡

shinoff2183267d ago

Darxyde

"Starfield. That aside, Mario Wonder, Super Mario RPG, Star Ocean, and Suikoden I and II"

Enough said. That's my game slate for the rest of the year.

DarkkMinion268d ago

That ain't a deal at all. Trading in a beast of a console for that, I don't think so.

Jin_Sakai267d ago

It’s a beast alright. Lol

“Digital Foundry about XSX teraflops advantage : It's kinda all blowing up in the face of Xbox Series X“

Jin_Sakai267d ago

All these “No thank you” comments from duplicate accounts. Lol

Christopher267d ago

I mean, I wouldn't trade in one console for another but instead buy both, prioritizing one over the other based on games I like.

Jin_Sakai267d ago

That would be the obvious choice but some might only be able to afford one or the other. And you have fans who will only support their console of choice regardless.

FinalFantasyFanatic267d ago (Edited 267d ago )

The PS5 is a better deal in the end, I really can't see the appeal of sticking with the Xbox.

DOMination-267d ago

"A good deal for those who want a console with games."

Like what? After all that bravado, the only game you could name was one that isn't out yet (Spider-Man 2)

Don't get me wrong, the XSX lineup in pathetic. But lets not pretend that the PS5 is any better. You can count the number of console exclusives for both on one hand.

If you're looking at games announced with release windows, there's only one console to get as it stands if you want games and it's not the PS5.

Jin_Sakai267d ago

PS5 has one slow year yes but they will start pumping out games soon and everyone knows the quality of their first party games are unmatched.

shinoff2183267d ago

Did the Xbox get any legend of heroes games, alot of jrpg type games skip the Xbox so unless your not into those types of games Xbox isn't a good choice at all. Alot of us from what I see have stuck with sony for the longest because they've had a great jrpg catalogue from 3rd party developers that xbox just can't touch. Those of us that enjoy alot of different games will get both consoles , I bought my series x about two weeks ago for starfield. It will only get used for a game here or there, most likely anything rpg related.

crazyCoconuts267d ago

Hard to tell who are in the Xbox Ambassador program from some of these comments. But for the masses, the console sales numbers are telling us which way the winds are blowing. XBox is in an important/pivotal moment right now imo

darthv72268d ago

I'll stick to keeping both. Gamestop though... seems kind of desperate to take in Series X units. What could they be plotting???

Eonjay268d ago

Almost certainly their plan is to charge obscenely high prices for a used Xbox.

myfathersbastard267d ago

They make pure profit on used consoles. They don’t share any of it. And they’re generally only like $50-$100 cheaper than new.
So they “sell”a PS5, make their small cut from that. Then sell the refurbished Xbox and get to keep all of it. It’s win win. They get a small cut on PS5, and a large cut from the Xbox.

Profchaos267d ago

Could be two fold sell as much base ps5 stick before the slim or pro drop and resell the xsx for those after a starfeild machine

I just want some games for my series X I have both since release and after weighing the offerings in PS Essentials to Gamepass I quickly realized I Owned anything of worth in both catalogs. And, the things I didn't I didn't see as justifiable for maintaining both subs.

Since then my series X is a legacy machine that I play my old games on and that's it. 3 years ago I really thought from that Xbox showcase we were going to have some great games by now. Instead, it's just been a lot of meh

Chevalier267d ago

Yep. That's why I waited this generation to have a reason to buy the Series X. Got horribly burnt buying the Xbox One because I decided they had games I was interested in then they canceled the games I wanted right after.

Was tempted after they had that great showing awhile back and am glad I waited because it would have collected dust for 2 years otherwise. Couple games out and on the horizon that look pretty good. Might be a good purchase in a couple years.

GameStop CFO to Resign in Latest Executive Departure From Retailer

GameStop’s chief financial officer is resigning, in the latest of several executive departures from the video game retailer.
