The most important point here is that you must consider the source. Hearing from a mobile game developer that console gaming is dying is about as reliable as getting the weather report from a flood insurance salesman.
"In a time when companies don't care about preserving games, I have high respect for the creators of projects like N64: Recompiled." - Hanzala from eXputer.
Some food for thought:
Would you donate your physical copy of a really rare/expensive cartridge (Conkers's BFD, Bomberman 64 Second Attack, Ogre Battle 64, the two Castlevania titles, etc) to those managing this project for the greater good of getting them preserved online for all to experience at some point?
The snippet of ray tracing at the end of the og trailer was low-key amazing. I found out thanks to Nerrel who also made a texture pack for MM, and i can't wait to see how much more great this game will be in the near future. With model swaps, ray tracing, retextures, and a more quicker process than decompilation, it's gonna bring new life to N64 games.
There might need to be a bit of clarification recompilation is not the same as decompilation.
This is basically a container to excite the rom within but allows for all sorts of beat additions and tricks like new lighting effects such as ray tracing to be added.
But decompilation would ultimately be king as it allows for a widespread porting capabilities and uses the assets from games to build a native install for PC or whatever the target system is e.g Mario 64 for PC or sonic mania for psvita / wii
Even 10 years after release, Grand Theft Auto 5 and GTA Online's player engagement has risen drastically compared to last year.
The game looks too clean without it.
i dont. it hurts my eyes. but im fairly ssensitive when it comes to that sort of stuff.
Riiiiiiight. They are dying... which is why Microsoft's sales curve is still on an upward slant even this late into the life cycle.
Of course, this sounds like the pipe dream of a mobile developer that is trying to make the sky fall just by shouting about a little rain.
"Apple, Google and Facebook on gaming, with a combined market capitalization of $793 billion, against a measly $306 billion from Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo"
This is like comparing number of floors in each others buildings or number of tiles in the floor of a mcdonalds vs a burger king
Stats are fine when they actually mean something in terms of games
plus this is coming from a mobile dev, so it comes off as insecurity above all else
We'll see. Perhaps if mobile games evolved in a way that the virtual d-pad didn't suck... then maybe we'll see some headway.
For now, I think we still associate mobile/tablet games as "casual" at best, beyond a few examples such as Infinity Blade.
Eventually people will be carrying a mobile device that can provide CGI quality graphics. Wirelessly link to any screen, support a plethora of wireless devices (pads etc).
When we reach this point, why on earth would you want or need a dedicated device?
Now, of course these devices maybe produced by any of the major players now (Sony/MS/Nintendo) as a natural evolution of their current offering. But to think you'll still have a "dedicated games console" 10/20 years down the line is not something I'd agree with, or even like to see.
I'm coming at this from a completely unbiased slant as I spend just as much time mobile gaming (if not more) than I do playing consoles, etc. That being said, consoles aren't going anywhere anytime soon. Smartphones and tablets are great in that they're ultraportable and can be snagged out of a pocket or bag in a heartbeat and messed with for a few minutes at a time. I'd be willing to bet that the average mobile gamer does so in bursts, and most likely with very inexpensive apps. I don't see them ponying up $20 for a fully-fleshed out title on iOS that requires vast amounts of time and effort.
At the end of the day, I see this as more a societal thing than anything else. People have the attention span of a gnat. They want something pretty and flashy to look at for five minutes, then they get bored and move on to another pretty and flashy thing to look at.
