2007's best took gaming beyond ordinary

Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, by Jessica Severs, Thursday, December 27, 2007:

From the outer reaches of our galaxy to the bustling social scene at a small Japanese high school, the best games of 2007 stand out from the pack with exceptional graphics and engrossing gameplay. Some thrilled us with immersive worlds; some gripped us with exhilarating action; others focused on sheer entertainment value. It was a blockbuster year for A-list titles, and ranking the Top 10 proved quite the challenge. Of the titles Pittsburgh Tribune reviewed this year that earned A's, here are best:

1. Mass Effect
2. BioShock
3. The Orange Box
4. God of War 2
5. Halo 3
6. Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3
7. Super Mario Galaxy
8. Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction
9. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
10. Stranglehold

Honorable mentions:

• The Darkness
• Guitar Hero II
• Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters

Warhawk now that was beyond ordinary I like it right on my HDD too no disc version. Stellar MP across all fronts of battle a ranking system that rivals Cod4. Flawless graphics and gameplay. All that was missing was the SP and it would have been Goty to me.

Lol, FPS bonanza!

In europe you can turn that list on it's head, insert Assassin's Creed and Uncharted, and remove Mass Effect and Stranglehold.

MW was an excellent videogame. They messed up Spec Ops big time, but aside from this it was a huge step in the right direction initially. Most notably, at launch it seemed to come from a very cohesive creative vision that was felt across gameplay, to story to art style/visual direction. It was also very notably written by prominent ex-Naughty Dog guys that quit almost immediately before release.

That COMPLETELY dissolved through post-launch content and the full pivot to a "cross-mode" narrative that completely obliterated the cohesion in overall story direction. Warzone then "became" the new face of Call of Duty and the franchise completely removed itself from anything remotely creatively "good". It is a pure money machine, so I kinda get why they're doing it....but I personally completely lost interest.

I would love to see Infinity Ward move off CoD and get to make their own product with full control. They clearly have some massive talent in their ranks but it's perverted by Activision's corporate interests.

My top 3 are Mario 3, Mario World and Mario 64. Mario Odyssey is also excellent, and I enjoyed Sunshine but didn't care for the Galaxy series.
