Gaming Unwrapped: The Simpsons Arcade Review

Gaming Unwrapped Writer Tad De La Graza Wrote

"Back when gaming was considered a hobby, the best place to get your fix was at the arcade. I remember my aunt and I wasting $20 at a time playing Konami classics. Along with X-men and TMNT, The Simpsons Arcade was one of our favorites. Looking back, I don’t regret a single moment, or wasting so much money. Now with xbla and psn providing these old gems, it’s easy to relive gamings finest past moments."

$699!

This is super cool but come on already. It’s an IKEA box with one game in a tablet.

dead_pixels997d ago

To be fair, this one actually has two games as it's bundled with The Simpsons Bowling. The price is steep, though.

scoltar997d ago (Edited 997d ago )

Yeah, the price of these is getting ridiculous. I absolutely love arcade games, and was excited when these first came out. But I knew I didn't have space for all of these, nor did I want to spend that money on something with only a couple games on it. I waited around and got a Final Fight machine from Walmart for $99, then later found a Space Invaders there for $75. For that price I just got it because of the native vertical screen. I modded both with a cheap PC and can play thousands of arcade games on them now, and that's great! When it gets to this level of pricing, might as well start looking into buying a custom arcade machine kit, or an xArcade machine. Or even, build your own for super cheap if you're handy with stuff like that!

Fluttershy77997d ago (Edited 997d ago )

What are you talking about! Is not a console! Is not for playing. It's a collector piece and the whole point is nostalgia, to display it, to see it and enjoy the memories of a time long gone... That said: not for me.

anubusgold997d ago

LOL i paid 500 dollars for a Neogeo cabinet with 50 neogeo games that had like samurai showdown games, metal slug, king of fighters, world heroes games, baseball , golf, and football games, and many other SNK games this is stupid lol

dead_pixels997d ago (Edited 997d ago )

That’s an unbelievable deal. I dropped $600 on my four-slot 15 years ago and all I got with it was Fatal Fury lol. At the time, that was a bargain.

dead_pixels997d ago

Ah, that makes much more sense. I’ve got about 50 MVS carts, so when I thought you were talking about getting that much original Neo hardware & software for such a steal I gotta admit I felt a part of me die!

anubusgold996d ago

@dead_pixels LOL they make a arcade stick with alot of those games built in as well.

I have the TMNT cabinet I wish Sega could get a license to bring out the Moonwalker cabinet I use to love playing that arcade game along with Willow from Capcom.

ZeekQuattro997d ago

Sega and MJ dont mix unfortunately. I'm nervous about the upcoming Sonic collection because of it. Anyway I'd also like to see Moonwalker make the return. I only ever played the Genesis version as a kid. Only heard about the arcade version a few years ago when I saw a GIF of 4 MJs running around with different colored suits. Lol

Knightofelemia997d ago (Edited 997d ago )

Moonwalker on Genesis and Master System are a different ball game compared to the arcade port the Genesis edition has I have seen zombies dance to thriller and I have seen zombies just dance to regular music. In the arcade you collect Bubbles his pet chimp you become Robo Jackson. In the console port on Genesis you just have the monkey humping your head pointing like a blind man to the kids you missed rescuing. The arcade port should have been the one ported to the Genesis over the side action check the 2D car and blow up port.

I would love to get the Afterburner and Outrun Moving Cabinets!

I'd pay 700 for those

CDbiggen997d ago

Played this with two others recently using mame. It was hard going, and not just because of the difficulty - it's really repetitive and gets old fast. Only jump and hit, no other moves you can pull off. We just slogged through to the end because we'd started. Also bear in mind we had nostalgia on our side too.

Deathdeliverer997d ago

It’s funny that the website is heypoorplayer, but they are telling you to hurry and secure your $699 overpriced emulator. This should be on heydisposablefundsplayer.

dead_pixels997d ago (Edited 997d ago )

For what it's worth, the name IS a reference to a very expensive Neo Geo title.

Deathdeliverer997d ago

Right, it’s just a coincidence.

Is The Simpsons Arcade Game as good as you remember?

Games Asylum: "...To this day the original Simpsons arcade game remains one of my fondest arcade memories, alongside Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Wrestlemania and various racing games with elaborate cabinets.

So just how rose tinted is my nostalgia? Is The Simpsons Arcade Game still as good as I remember today?"

No it isn't. Have it included in one of those arcade sticks with 1000 arcade games. the Xmen one holds up well, but the attacks just don't feel as good in the Simpsons one. Looks nice though.

shaun mcwayne1792d ago

Remember the limitations tech had back then, cavemen like me learned to stand upright just to play arcade machines, evolution baby.

MONOLITHICIDE1791d ago

haha good laugh. oh arcades. time to go watch Terminator 2

Profchaos1792d ago (Edited 1792d ago )

Replayed it a few years back was a pretty nostalgic trip down memory lane but frustrating as all hell at the last few levels
