Realistic setting-based shooters steal the scene, if your FPS is not set in some Middle East country or in the middle of a modern war, it’s almost impossible for it to be successful. We don’t need to go too far back in time to find when sci-fi arena shooters based on extreme speed, stunts, tons of crazy weapons and crazy reflexes ruled the world: the various Quake games or the revolutionary Unreal Tournament games were the place to go for any shooter fan in the world. No big storyline, just massive ‘shoot each other in the face’ action online, or against bots. In 2012, things are different: several years passed since any of these franchises produced an actual sequel, and no other competition seems to be coming up. Or maybe there is: Nexuiz. This project was first born as a Quake modification back in 2001, it shortly became a free and very popular open source arena shooter that had nothing to feel ashamed...

Arena shooter Nexuiz returns to Steam

Remember Nexuiz, the arena first-person shooter pulled from Steam three years ago after publisher THQ went bust? It's back.

Developer IllFonic has self-published the game on Steam, where it costs £7.99 (it's £3.99 until 22nd March).

Nexuiz servers shut down on Xbox 360

The aftershock of THQ's dissolution continues, as servers for the Xbox 360 version of Nexuiz have been shut down. Developer Illfonic announced the news on its Facebook page, noting that the servers were being run by THQ and "cannot be maintained anymore." The PC servers, however, will remain online courtesy of Illfonic itself.
