Whether one thinks Rage was great or not doesn't change the fact that it fell below expectations. I think Rage's success or failure was tied to Doom 4 in some way.

Problem is the Doom series existed in a time where the FPS genre was just starting to get popular on consoles. Since then their popularity has skyrocketed as well as the number of titles. Doom is going to have a hard time distinguishing itself beyond its name. Had Rage been a phenomenal success I'm sure we would have more solid info on Doom 4.

As to whether they should announce it or not depends on the direction Id will take with it. IMO Rage showed that Id isn't a sure bet, not that they suck or anything, just that Doom 4 isn't immune to failure. With that in mind all involved need to make sure what they are releasing is going to compete in the modern market.

Doom 4 is unique in that it a pretty basic FPS. It thrived when the tech pace was slower than it is today, so tech can't be the only thing pushing this game.

I would like to see Doom 4 be successful, not forgotten. If that means they have to go back and rethink things then they need to do that. If Doom 4 fails I can't see the IP surviving.

After playing Metro 2033 I realized that tech means nothing in comparison to solid story pacing and intense gameplay. Metro 2033 still suffered from some of the same problems as STALKER but it was a really solid, linear experience.

I could see Doom 4 being successful following the linear path of Doom 3 but being a bit more engaging and story driven (character driven?) like Metro 2033.

For sure, though, id Software cannot just rely on name alone and engine prescence (id Tech 5) to carry the Doom franchise. That's exactly what happened with RAGE and it's why so many people were disappointed with it.

I don't understand the hate Doom 3 got, but the original has to be tops for me too.
