Ps Vita – Did Sony Just Beat Nintendo & Microsoft To The Punch..

As we all await the Wii U’s launch, or the Xbox 720 one of the consoles primary features in some ways, has had its thunder stolen by Sony’s release of the PS Vita.

Nintendo products will nearly ALWAYS sell minus a few exceptions (e.g. Virtual Boy) so I don't think Nintendo is worried. No one knows what MS has planned outside of MS of course.

GraveLord4450d ago

They only sell when they are priced cheap.

When they price consoles at a premium(Nintendo 64 and early Gamecube days) they end up not selling very well.

MaxXAttaxX4450d ago

Cross Play and Remote Play FTW!

ABizzel14450d ago

Sony should sell a PS3 and PSV bundle for $400 to really take advantage of this compatiability, and get more games out that allow you to play cross platform or transfarring.

lover20124450d ago

@abizzel1
dude that's a very smart idea
i would sell my ps3 and buy that ps3/vita bundle

Razongunz4450d ago

@ABizzel1 thats a great idea right there.

unfortunanly i allready own a ps3 and a vita and i bought both system this month xD had to get the ps3 mainly for R&C and FFXIII-2 and my ps3 is white so imma keep that!

but the idea is indeed a good one.

i could see sony doing that in about 6 months meybe, or shortly after the release of the Wii-U most likely.

Rusco874450d ago

I think if cross play is going to appeal to consumers more maybe Sony shoul look at bundling the games that are cross play compatible together. Example. DVD and blu rays now come in double or triple play packs. If say the next FIFA was cross play compatible they should think about putting the ps3 game with the vita game for an extra 20£/$. This will sell more consoles, but it is also up to the developers to account for cross play and want to sell bundles like this.

mcstorm4450d ago

@ABizzel1 I was just thinking long the same lines when I had read the article and that was where I found a big flaw in this persons article and that is they are sold as 2 stand alone products and if sony were to push this they would have to come up with a very good package as from what we know the wiiU will be around £250 to £300 for the console with tablet then there is the price of the PS3 with PSV and you are looking at around £189.00 for the PSV and then £27.99 for a 8GB memory card and then on top of that you need to spend another £189 on a PS3 (thats just going off play.com prices) and in total you are looking at 405.99 for them both which for alot of people this is too expensive and we will also need the Developers to make use of the technology too.

It is a very good Idea and I think it would work very well but I just think because of the Price it would put alot of people off. If sony made it around £300 to £250 then maybe people would pick it up but I think at the current prices it will not work.

On a Side note I cant wait to pickup my PSV next month just undecided on what game to get with it.

Squatch834450d ago

Early Gamecube days? U mean £130 for a console at launch was premium?

fullmetal2974450d ago

Um, didn't Sony had to do multiple price cuts to increase sales? Remember the $599 price tag of the PS3?

FriedGoat4450d ago

@Fullmetal297 Uh, the price cuts were normal price cuts, they don't cut the price like Nintendo when they are in a panic. Hence why even the PS2 was pretty expensive 5 years in to its life. The ps3 is still more expensive than the 360, People keep on about Sony are going to do this Sony are going to cut the price of this... Look at the past... they don't cut prices alot.

tokugawa4450d ago

@ friedgoat

the ps2 was still expensive after 5 yrs because there was no need to cut the price of something that was selling millions per month.

the ps3 on the otherhand was overpriced (in the eyes of the consumer who doesnt know better), and sony were forced to cut its price several times. the only reason it is still the most expensive is because sony cant afford to lose more cash on it... no other reason

jony_dols4450d ago

@fluffydelusions:

The N64 did alright at 35 million lifetime sales, whilst the Gamecube barely shifted 20 million units.

Hardly qualifies as ALWAYS sell well.

A Sony console has NEVER sold less than 60 million. That's pretty damn amazing.

fatstarr4450d ago

they only reason Nintendo sells cheap is because we expect it.

wii u can have a 8core gpu in it and I would still wait for a price drop because Nintendo always drops the price. so if you start at 150$ you are gonna sell a console for 70$ so Nintendo starts at super premium prices and then tricks you with a steep discount which is a great plan. it works tons and gets people excited for a price drop 8 times outta 10

people are clamoring for a vita price drop but we wont see that for a year or so. and when they do drop the price it will be 10-30$

Achtung4450d ago

@GraveLord

No... you're wrong. The N64 and Gamecube were cheap compared to the other consoles.

They were both $199.99 while the ps1 and ps2 were $299.99

@fluffydelusions

Because there will always be kids in the world. If I ever have kids, I am raising them on Nintendo consoles and games. Then I'll let them choose between Playstation or Xbox when they're old enough.

@ABizzel1

Looks like it's time to accept my cousin's challenge and learn how to release apps on Android, because that sounds like a very enticing deal, especially since I want/don't have either of them!

Lazy_Sunday4450d ago

Please don't tell me this is our next gen gimmick. IMO we need serious CPU and GPU upgrades, not touch screens. Both if it's economically sound--but it won't be. Tablets aren't good enough to use as interface devices for gaming. If they were we wouldn't need a console unit, we'd just need the tablet.

Touch screens are a step back from a more successful interactive interface anyway. We already know touch screen FPS games feel awkward. Two separate joysticks in each arm is versatile, don't know why they're not just splitting the controllers in half and adding motion controls.

mechlord4450d ago

I dunno man, touchscreens do have place in this gen consoles/games. The first time i saw uncharted in vita i thought about all those RTS that just dont have a place in the regular consoles. Endwar could be a very different title without the voice gimmickry and some touch controls.

RPGs could use it too; it rather have some virtual buttons that i can touch to activate spells than deal with some wheels ive been seein

r2kcipher4450d ago

exactly, thats what i am waiting for. the vita can pull off the rts genre better then the ps3 and 360. because it has a touch screen.

games like diablo 3 should do well also.

Lazy_Sunday4450d ago (Edited 4450d ago )

While a good RTS games on console seems like a redeemable trait, a lot of success in RTS games could be achieved with motion controllers becoming a standard instead of a standalone gimmick. Using your body as an interface device is moving us closer into the future of interactive entertainment--putting another screen in front of us doesn't seem incredibly productive, and it's much more expensive than standardizing motion controllers for more successful casual play.
I would never trade touch screen for serious raw performance power--which we need if we want games to play better, and if we want games to be easier to develop. The idea of a price point for the next gen being capped by an expensive gimmick and not power is my general concern, if it's cheap and affordable then I might bat an eye its way, so long as it also has enough power and responsiveness to be an intuitive platform for play.

strickers4446d ago

I thought like you. Then I got a Vita, and it does indeed have the capability to be better than Ps3/360 for controls. It really does.

I now want touch screen Dualshock next gen.
Touch screens are a rubbish controller alone and pads are far better, but pads plus touch betters both.

Sony should make the all in one bundle....

I've seen a ps3 go 200$; move resistance doomsday bundle for 79$; and im sure they can bring down the vita to 200$.

Hence a nice 500$ package for those new to sony.

Cross play is merely an extension of the Remote Play idea. So I'd say Sony beat Nintendo "to the punch" several years ago.

Of course the whole idea was born from and evolved from the idea of console>handheld connectivity. So the true argument of who did what first is still up for debate.

Titanz4451d ago

Don't you remember the GBA/Gamecube links cables?

Nitrowolf24450d ago

I also remember the Sega Dreamcast controllers
Though not entirely the same. Imagine if they kept making consoles, would we have had this much longer ago?

MaxXAttaxX4450d ago

Link cables?
Cross Play and Remote Play allows you to play full games from across the nation.

maniacmayhem4450d ago (Edited 4450d ago )

But how many games actually supported remote play on the psp/ps3?

It was always a feature but hardly used.

WildArmed4450d ago

This. I honestly use remote play (I have a PSP, not Vita haha) to watch videos and set up d/ls on store.
I tried playing PSX games, but it's tough w/o L2/R2 buttons; and in some cases, a second joystick.

I did play Pixel Junkie Monsters a lot in remote play before thou.

If i can play any of my ps3 games via Vita's remote play, I think I'm very inclined to pick it up. I'm just waiting for some community response + stable opinion to get it.

Playing Valkriya Chronicles (I really do love this game) on my PS Vita would really make me happy XD

dragonyght4450d ago

actually you could play lair

Knight_Cid4451d ago

uh the vita didnt slow the 3ds down at all.......

it sold 250k worldwide last week and that was number 1

SilentNegotiator4450d ago (Edited 4450d ago )

That's not what this article is about.

But if all you care about are sales, don't bother reading the article. Put the Nintendo brand pail back over your head and everything will be fine once more.

tiffac0084450d ago (Edited 4450d ago )

Umm... I think he did miss the article. lol!

But joking aside if Sony can just promote Remote Play properly and probably add/show more gimmicks that the PS3 + PSV can do, like what Ninty is doing with the Wii U and its tablet controller, then I think they Sony may have something going for them in the long run.

IF they have the foresight to accomplish this and well that's a big IF. lol!

How Many More Victims, Like Garry's Mod, Will Nintendo's Hurtful Crusade Create?

Hanzala from eXputer: "As Nintendo takes out 20 years' worth of stuff from Garry's Mod, I watch in shock, thinking why it continues to hurt and discourage its fans."

RiseNShine1d 9h ago (Edited 1d 8h ago )

The irony that some of the most disgusting business practices come from companies like Disney or Nintendo, i can't even begin to understand what terrible damage was Garrys Mod making to Nintendo bottom line, imho they're getting pretty nervous about where they're heading in the future, handhelds are no longer something exclusive to Nintendo, from Steam Deck to many others, now you can play the latest games and pay a fraction of the price on Steam sales, so it's up to their exclusives, which just on their own would make hard to justify purchasing a closed overpriced hardware with outrageous price policies (Super Mario Odyssey is still 60 euro 6 years later!), and as a home console they're always underperforming compared to Sony or Xbox.

gold_drake1d 2h ago (Edited 1d 2h ago )

i cam guarantee you, that their exclusives alone is what drives switch sales. they sell in the 10s of millions of copies.

nintendo created their franchises to be sort of nostalgia driven, exclusive only on nintendo.

people will always buy the pkmn games as they always bring in new younger fans amd is family friendly

mario kart, the same thing, mario games in general.

zelda games are system sellers. animal crossing for the casual gamers.

nintendo doesnt need third vame devs essentially. they made sure with the switch and the limitations that they looked more to pc ps and xbox.

its sad, but nintendo is more than fine with what they're doing. they positioned themselves to appeal to the more casual gamers.

but to your point, im not sure why they're doing this rly.

Inverno1d ago

Look at how they handled Nintendo games being streamed or uploaded on YouTube in the past. They killed Yuzu and Citra even when they had nothing to do with ToTK being leaked, not to mention it was basically unplayable on emulation the week it was leaked. Smash Bros tournament, that was fairly recent. They shut down their online services without any care for purchases made. I bought a switch after skipping their last 2 consoles and handhelds but I don't plan on buying anything Nintendo in the future. They take things to the extremes, they legitimately hate their fans. They're honestly right up there with the likes of Acti, EA, and Ubi, only difference is that they disguise themselves as being family friendly all the while being shady.

This is definitely happening, I just hope they have 2 versions one with a much bigger screen.

GamerRN4d ago

I'll be happy with this, and a PC console hybrid that rivals anything we have power wise

Number1TailzFan4d ago

The problem with bigger devices is playing them on your side in bed, Vita and before that was fine. Since the Switch you gotta have a gooseneck holder & controllers detached so you can lie down holding them, or your arm will quickly get tired.

A gaming laptop 🤷🏿🤣

A Xbox version of Logitech G-Cloud?
I mean, why bother? Not like the G cloud is flying off shelves and what would Xbox add to make it better?
They're surely not going to create bespoke architecture here and there are already a few Windows handhelds out there. I have little confidence in their ability to put together an attractive UI in the way Steam did. So I doubt anything will come from this.

KicksnSnares5d ago

Day One buy for me if they'll make a dedicated handheld device.

darthv724d ago

i have that logitech g-cloud. Its a sweet little piece of kit. I like that it can also install games from the play store unlike the other android based handheld.

mudakoshaka4d ago

It sure is! Don't understand why you get the down-votes. Whoever does not like the G Cloud must have been dropped down a well, head first, when they were of a younger age.

PassNextquestion4d ago

I wonder if Microsoft will perform better in Japan if they do actually make a handheld since everyone says handheld and mobile are king over there.

TiredGamer4d ago

This looks like the future of the game industry... all three platforms with a handheld option.

I wonder if the Playstation Portal is a technology test-bed/prototype for a future Playstation handheld?

rlow14d ago (Edited 4d ago )

It’s a possibility but I can’t help but think would that be the best way to go about it? Though it would give you data on how much it is used and game type. It’s still not a true portable device and so people approach it differently. I think that data on phones, tablets, and of course the competition would give a better indication.

But I really think if Sony is considering a new PSP that could play ps5 games, now would be the time to dive in. Honestly, if they do this, it would be huge.

Traecy4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

Doubt if Sony PS wants to support a new handheld with first party games. Something they lacked with the Vita. What they should do is have a handheld that is like the PS Portal which can play all games but play those games on the go as well as at home. Something like that is a better investment.

TiredGamer4d ago

Agreed that you will probably never see a separate line of games specifically for the handheld (a la PSP or PSVita). The modern economics and expectations of game development make that cost prohibitive. What makes more sense is if the full-fat game on PS5 or PS6 has a special "handheld" profile that is automatically optimized for the lower spec handheld. There would be some significant compromises compared to the bigger console variant, but it would be the same game overall and would only require a single purchase.... somewhat what the Switch does with a lower resolution when playing handheld versus docked.

"Another game pass event with their plans to go all streaming."

It's both. I would worry about your own intelligence at this point. It seems that there is not enough to go around for you to worry about how smart other people are.

Lightning774d ago

It's just a regular event announcing games. Nice one captain obvious they're gonna mention gp stuff like they do every year what else is new.

The all streaming part is just you, being you I guess. They have streaming options but going all streaming again is just you pulling stuff outta thin air.
