Burning Embers: Violent Religion In Video Games

Ember says: So today I received an e-mail from the Convergence Media Manager for the News Bureau at the University of Missouri. He wrote an article (and published it of course) about a study that was done at the University that shows that video games often depict religion as "violent and problematized". Greg Perreault, a doctoral student in the School of Journalism at University of Missouri, did the aforementioned study. Perreault took five different contemporary games (Mass Effect 2, Final Fantasy XIII, Assassin's Creed, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion) and took at look at how religion was depicted in each of the games...(continued in article)

Couldn't you say the same thing about oil and money?

It all boils down to human nature and most humans are violent and problematic.

Religion is a reason to go to war, human nature is the cause of that war.

i give you god and i get your land

I don't mind so much as long as it doesn't boil down into downright refuting any system of belief. I feel like that crosses a line. Otherwise, religious references, I feel, are kind of a neat relatable reference for the storyline for people.

"University that shows that video games often depict religion as "violent and problematized"

Yeah and centuries of real life bloodshed,fear-mongering,wars and child abuse had nothing to do with the bad light religion is often-times seen in >_>

Religion has caused so much death over a belief system.

If this is true, I hope it leads to Morrowind getting remade next.

-Foxtrot16d ago

I thought they’d go for Morrowind first to be honest but this is a welcoming surprise to tide us over before ES6

TheColbertinator15d ago

Well said. Exactly my thoughts too.

Tedakin16d ago

Unreal Engine isn't efficient for open world games, so I question the reliability of this story.

isarai16d ago

Yeah, 1st thing that came to my mind too, although i CAN see it being likely for ease if use, but it's not going to run very well if so

Tacoboto16d ago (Edited 16d ago )

I'd wonder if it would just be exploiting Unreal for graphics but the underlying engine/logic is still the original framework.

Like how we had the graphical remakes of Halo Anniversary, Tomb Raider I-III, and Demon's Souls.

Could also end up a disaster like the GTA Trilogy

mkis00715d ago

I have heard that too but even if it's modified isnt arkham knight UE?

Fragslayer15d ago

"remake will run both an Unreal Engine 5 project and the old Oblivion project. For instance, new graphics are rendered in the Unreal Engine 5 project, but most of the gameplay and physics are still done on the original Oblivion engine"

So with this logic it'll run just fine using UE5 tool sets on top of Gamebryo's engine or maybe even Creation Engine, who knows.

Hopefully modders can fix the aged combart in this game if this is true. Enemies leveling up with you broke and defeated the whole purpose of leveling up.

Fragslayer15d ago

Yeah it could use some tuning for sure hence the need for a Remake not a Remaster. I'm surprised it's even a conversation within them group which makes me skeptical it's Oblivion. I wouldn't say they shouldn't level up at all though maybe just a leave them a couple levels behind to appease the masses.
