DLC Gone Wrong

GNT: Downloadable Content is commonplace in modern gaming. Its a great way to keep a game’s life span alive and for gamers, it means more for you to do in your favorite game at no cost, as long as the DLC is free. But sometimes, developers take DLC a little bit too far.

just checked my history last night, i have played over 130 games now this gen & have spent colectivly on both my 360 & ps3 a whopping $10 in dlc. This market isnt working on getting money from me lol

... whenever a game has DLC, I just avoid that game, or I pick it up when it's much cheaper, or when it gets a 'complete' release.

There have been many games I would have paid 50-60 euro for if it wouldn't have had DLC, but I skipped or waited for them to come down severely in price cause they DID have DLC.

Yeah, I just realized that I've done the same thing pretty much this whole generation through.

i really liked the idea of dlc at first. but this article is spot on for the most part. game companies ruined what could have been amazing by getting greedy.

day 1 dlc - wrong. its produced at the same time as the game itself and therefor should be included in that game since it is highly like that the cost for that dlc to be produced was factored into the $60 i just paid for it.

avatar items, costumes, etc - there is not significant work involved in creating items such as these and as such they should be free or in game awards %100 of the time

additional game content - this is fine so long as it is produced after the game has launched and is substantial enough to warrant the price. if the full game is 8hrs long at $60 dollars then i should get equal priced dlc min. 60/8= $7.5 an hour so any additional dlc should be over an 1 hr worth of content at $10 minimum.

I think the type of DLC that I hate the most are the ones that are pre-order exclusives that target a certain store. The Tales of Graces F - Gamestop pre-order deal is one example.

What if you are a person who has chosen not to shop at a certain store - due to bad service, or bad business practices? If you want the DLC do you put your principles on hold? Or do you do something underhanded, like buying the game at Gamestop and another store (say Amazon) as well, then use the DLC code from the GS receipt with the Amazon copy, while returning the unopened copy to GS? Yes, I have actually heard people talking about doing just that, and I couldn't even feel mad at them, because they are only reacting to the unfair business practice of exclusive DLC.

In second place is DLC that is overpriced for what you get, or companies that put out DLC, but don't bother to patch their game. Best example I can think of here is Sims 3 for PS3/360. The game is broken, and it will eventually cause you to lose all of your saved progress, however EA never properly patched the game, instead they released a whole slew of DLC packets that were ridiculously overpriced. $10-$15 a pop for a few pieces of furniture or a handful of ugly hairstyles. It is one of the worst examples of bad DLC practices I can think of, but I am sure there are a lot worse ones out there.

One of the worse examples of dlc I've seen is paying $5 to change your appearance in White Knights Chronicles. Talk about greedy developers!

Even EA, as bad as they are doesn't do that, or at least not in Kingdoms of Amalur were you can change your appearance any time for free by using the mirror in your character's bedroom.
