Don't Be Loyal: Alternative Stores & Services similar to Steam

Gamers Nexus: "A competitive market is a healthy market, as we know. Expressing a sense of loyalty toward any single brand or distributor is sure to end in either disappointment or highway robbery (and you won't be the one doing the robbing); I've seen it just as much as anyone else: An indie developer puts out an amazing game, no doubt worthy of many hours of play, only to have a response of 'I'll get it if it's on Steam.' This list has several alternatives to Steam for gamers."

Its not below steam to screw its customers , just becuz gabe's nice doesn't mean his company gives a shit about us

Kurylo3d4466d ago

have u ever been screwed by steam? So far steam has given me hassle free refunds and $2 dollar deals for $60 dollar games :/

adorie4466d ago

I don't care what some opinion piece spouts off. I will stick with Steam until they stick it to Me.

Even if that means missing out on games like ME3 and BF3. I'll just buy'em on PS3 or whatever. If I want, I can *try* them out. Steam's done me right and I don't see any reason to turn my back on a company I have supported for a few years now.

400+ games. :)

Ducky4466d ago

It's a privately owned company with a small number of employees.
They can make a living off of TF2 hats, and with no investors to worry about, there's not much reason to screw customers for the extra buck.

kesvalk4463d ago

the only games i buy off steam is the ones not avaiable there.

they have a amazing support team, give near-absurd deals, and top notch gaming features that no other digital distribution have...

why not give my money to a company that, istead of shafting everyone to get some more money, give us more and more incentives to buy there?

saying that you shouldn't stick with a company that give you the better deals...

gamers sure are stupid...

As Steam becomes more bloated, it will inevitably become more evil. All competition is good competition - it lowers prices and forces Steam and others to remain innovative and stay on their toes.

Kurylo3d4466d ago

How much more bloated can steam get? it accounts for 90% of pc game sales.

Torillian4466d ago

Well I do love Steam but it's nice to have a list of alternatives and their benefits.

Velox4466d ago

I had an account banned once because of a logitech driver they thougt was a hack , I got it back eventually, but it took several weeks and many emails :/

NYC_Gamer4466d ago

I will only buy my new digital games from Steam and classics from GOG.

Velox4466d ago

I got heroes 3 on gog for $ 5. , I love that game :)

5yN4MWQU4466d ago

GOG has amazing prices on those old games. I own most of them, but the simplicity of installation and full compatibility makes the purchases worth it.

turokgames4466d ago

Same here, Steam and GOG. Screw Origin <,<

5yN4MWQU4466d ago

Origin is unbearable and untrustworthy. I don't trust EA with my money after what they've done.

Moncole4466d ago (Edited 4466d ago )

You can also use Desura for indie games not available on Steam :)

PC gamers only hate Origin because EA made it to be greedy.

Ducky4466d ago

If the game is a steamworks title, then I usually buy from elsewhere. Places like GreenManGaming and Amazon usually are cheaper (sometimes even more than Steam's sales), and they just give you a code to activate on Steam.

Should have happened a long time ago. People wanting refunds after 50 hours in game.

fsfsxii18d ago

Pc gamers will take this as an excuse to pirate things

KyRo18d ago

I'm not sure why you're getting disgrees. Whilst not all PC gamers are petty, an awful lot of them are lol

Crows9018d ago

Entirely untrue. Not any more petty than console gamers. The only large difference is console gamers don't have much of a choice.

Michiel198918d ago

Not sure why you're getting agrees. an awful lot of console gamers are overemotional twinks ready to go to war over a plastic box, I'll take being a pc gamer then.

Speaking about overgeneralizing much.

Nooderus18d ago

"X" type of gamer conversations are cringe

qalpha18d ago

Daily reminder that 'TheGamer' is a corporate-generated, anti-gamer, anti-consumer, clickbait web site. They are mostly A.I. generated articles that villainize gamers. They provide nothing positive and actively try to provoke and divide the community through extreme view points and politics. Do not give them any clicks.

Inverno18d ago

Only scumbags? As if people don't play their games on console put in the most amount of hours and return it to GameStop and trade it in for another game. But also how many people are actually do this? And what games have been allowed to be refunded?

DustMan18d ago

You can refund any game you've purchased as long as it hasn't been longer than two weeks, and you've played less than 2 hours. I wish they would change it to 3 hours because some RPG's have so much exposition that you may only get an hour total of complete gameplay. That's my only knock on it. I've refunded plenty of stuff I was just curious to try. I typically stay away from Early Access titles which are the only ones affected by this policy change.

Inverno18d ago

Apparently early access doesn't count, only complete games with a play early preorder bonus.

Gaming4Life198118d ago

I definitely know if I want a refund in 2 hours.

SegaSaturn66918d ago

I never liked refunding anything. Even if a film is bad, i dont want my money back. Sometimes things just aren't for me, and it's not the creator's fault necessarily.

Gaming4Life198118d ago

I feel you and i have never walked out on a bad movie cause I payed my money. I also don't refund games cause I'm a gamer and I know what to buy lol. I think having a digital refund is great.
