OXM: The Darkness II review

OXM Darkness 2 Review excerpt:

"We’ve all got a dark side. Whether it’s rush-hour traffic or a snotty boss, something gets under your skin and makes you want to turn furniture into firewood. But when Jackie Estacado pops the cork on the Darkness — the sinister presence he’s kept bottled up inside him since the last game — the result is no mere tantrum: it’s the most perversely invigorating horror shooter in ages."

All i want to know is if its a freeroamer like the first. Why is no one talking about this.

camel_toad4481d ago (Edited 4481d ago )

At 6 hrs in length my guess is there prolly cant be too much free roam, like the first one had. Sad.

And companies wonder why used games sales are eating away at their profits...

GraySnake4481d ago

The Missions are linked by Jackie's Mansion.. so not really.

Pleasantly surprised by the demo, didn't think it'd live up to the first but it's a pleasant change they've made.

camel_toad4481d ago

Am I reading something wrong or does this review actually say its only a 6 hr campaign? (plus2hr coop) If its only 6 hrs that reallly hurts it for me.

Serjikal_Strike4481d ago

Some vids on youtube said its between 4-6, not really surprised by this

camel_toad4481d ago

Man that really bums me out. Its one thing for multiplayer-heavy games to have really short campaigns but I really dont think games like this should get away with it.

Kal8534481d ago (Edited 4481d ago )

Me too. I've been really psyched to get this, I've had it pre-ordered for months. But I can't justify spending $10 per hour on a game. I read the co-op only adds 2 more hours. I'm sorry, but that's a deal breaker.

Kakihara4481d ago

I have to agree, I'm buying it anyway since I'm a pretty big Darkness fan and need to see the next chapter of the story but the 6 hour campaign is a major major turn off. It seems to me that splitting the game between a single player and co-op campaign has resulted in both campaigns being far too short, so rather than making sure to please one type of gamer they've made sure to slightly disappoint both single and multiplayer gamers.

Portal 2 kinda pulled off the short single player and very short co-op campaign but what works for a puzzle game doesn't work for a linear shooter.

How fast are people running through games now-a-days to only have 4-6 hour campaigns?

I've heard of such lengths for campaigns this gen and haven't ran into 1 being that short in any games I've played... but I do truely explore the hell out of the worlds in all games, so I know that helps add longevity for me!

GraySnake4481d ago

I'm curious to see how difficulty and relic finding factor into this because "Thug" difficulty was pretty much one shot kills for the enemies in the demo... and I think that would mean you could breeze through some portions pretty damn quick.

This is why I don't buy video games anymore. I have a huge Steam backlog and developers are gracious enough to offer their products for free. Fortnite is free, Darkness is free, lots of good free games. Thanks Humble

Nice thanks for the heads up.

I had a blast with the 1st one. It was perfect. The 2nd not that much, was pretty forgettable tbh and the cell shading, although beautiful, was not my kind of tea

That said, if they make a 3rd one they should make it a bit closer to the original's...vibe and looks.

kevnb2369d ago

Its not even made by the same team, I hate when publishers do that.

veicht2368d ago

I still enjoyed 2, it still kept some of the neat things from the first one. Having said that, the first is considerably better, I'd rather the 3rd (somehow) end up being made by machine games which seems to be where a fair amount of the darkness/butchers bay devs ended up.

chris2352369d ago

are we talking switch ports again or why is another lastGen game in the headlines?

ctrlxthroat2369d ago

I'm still hoping for a pc rerelease of the original.

I personally enjoyed this one more than first game (even though I think first one is good too)

The Darkness: A Greek tragedy for the video game age - G4@Syfygames

Matt Ferguson from G4@Syfygames writes "When I think of tragic love stories and star-crossed lovers, I can't recall a more heart-wrenching example than Jackie Estacado and Jenny Romano from The Darkness. What begins as a romantic story between two people from very different worlds ends abruptly in a horrific tragedy, drawing many parallels from the works of Classical Greek tragedians and epic poets."

I agree! That was a great game with well played characters.

Kallisti3003d ago

Still own a copy of both of them. The Darkness III on PS4/PC/XONE would be awesome.
