TheSixthAxis chats to Sony Liverpool about WipEout 2048.
VGChartz's Adam Cartwright: "In this article, I’m aiming to look at 10 of the best DLC packs on Vita – ones that offer a compelling additional experience for a reasonable price and so are well worth checking out. There were a whole load to sift through in writing this, so don’t be too disheartened if your favourite isn’t here, but do let me know in the comments what you think!"
Will we ever see more of Sony’s futuristic racing franchise?
I would absolutely LOVE a motorstorm collection. All 5 games in one package.
Motorstorm
Motorstorm Pacific Rift (my favorite)
Motorstorm Apocalypse
Motorstorm Arctic Edge
Motorstorm RC
Ya that would be awesome but highly unlikely, it’s a little messed up while Driveclub started out lousy all the server and updates ended up making one fabulous racer. Developer was able to turn around Days Gone into a pretty good game not sure why Driveclub did not get that chance also
Even better question, what happen to Twisted Metal?
So many great exclusives that I hope Sony bring back for the PS5.
Why get a motorstorm collection that will look like ass when we can get a new installment properly developed that will have brand new maps, vehicles and mechanics as well as legacy ones.
wow imagine if they did a motorstorm with VR compatible like wipeout! Would be insane! With all the dirt and mud flying in all directions and looking to the side or any direction to see the other competitiors while racing around the track and the sense of speed when you decide to hit the nitros! They got to do this!
I should have stated that I already know Evolution was shut down. Despite that, Sony could give the IP to another studio if they wanted. I realize that Apocalypse didn't sell very well, but that was due to circumstances beyond Evolution's control. I feel like Evo should have at least started this gen off with a Motorstorm series remaster before they went on to Driveclub to help get their feet wet with the new hardware. Might have helped them be better prepared in creating Driveclub.
What happened to Wipeout is that the games only logical and natural evolution involves VR. Which Sony has already introduced to test out people’s reaction. If enough people are actually interested, then we will get the next Wipeout. Otherwise I think there are a lot of people out there who remember the franchise fondly, but wouldnt be will to fork out full price for it. Lets see if Wipeout VR will turn the franchise into its glory days when the fast paced racer was a unique offering.
Simple really. Nothing happened to it except time.
The first PSVR experience I had that made me feel dizzy and nauseous, I was pretty gutted about it because it looked amazing and very immersive.
Not everyone needs to care. Not everyone cared about games either. But here we are.
I would love a new Ridge Racer, but the series has fallen off the earth somehow.
Wipeout is in great shape, finally released in VR, the way it was meant to be played.
They also shut down that studio and most of them went to Codemasters that made Onrush which sold horribly.
Aww man, what about the Twisted Metal and Warhawk devs? Are they still around?
I miss Motorstorm too. I miss cinematic racers in general. Split Second, Motorstorm Apocalypse, even NFS the Run. Racing with earthquakes, avalanches, tsunamis, police, bombs etc was thrilling. No everything is a boring sim/semi sim. We ain't allowed fun with racers anymore
Driveclub Developer Evolution shut down because Driveclub didn't make them money.
They were planning on supporting Driveclub while also working on a new Motorstorm. That got scrapped after DCVR update released and the chopping axe came down on the studio.
They went on to become a Codemasters's subsidiary called "Evo"and put out Onrush, which was a spiritual successor to Motorstorm. But it sold horribly and Codemasters shuttered Evo for good.
Bad management from the get go of The PS4 generation. Lead to a great team being liquidated. :(
Have you got a point or is it just a wee trolling session mate?
Just a little bit of trolling, but in all honesty I do love these games and it is a shame they aren't around anymore.
Personally didnt like wipeout, just couldn't get into it, I'm sure if there is a demand a new one will be made, who knows what they have planned.
I loved the collection that recently came out and then coupled that with some PSVR support made it even better.
Glad you enjoyed it man, I hope they make another for the fans, nothing worse than really wanting a game that isn't coming.
What happened to interesting racing games?
Wipeout, Modnation Racers, Motorstorm, Split Second, Blur...
Split Second is one of the greatest arcade racers of last generation. You're one of the very few people who I've ever seen mention it.
It's the first game I think of when someone asks what franchise should be revived, it was a quality game. The level where you drive under the landing plane gave you a rush every time.
I love arcade racers and all of those titles are in my PS3 collection.
I seem to remember being really frustrated that publishers put out Split Second and Blur at almost the same time so they cannibalized each others sales.
Those arcade racers of the past won't cut it now. Mabey wipeout with rpg mechanics mabey some crafting and it being open world. Possibly wipeoput BR then it might get a chance
Pffft, speak for yourself.
I'll gladly purchase a MotorStorm remake collection made with the DriveClub engine, any day.
Good god the speed of Driveclub in the motor storm universe!!!!! Just creamed me pants...
I just grabbed the remastered collection for WipeOut and its leaps and bounds more impressive (and fun) than any racing game I've played since PS2. They tried that open world shit with Burnout Paradise and it was corny.
Sony, what happened to:
A. Socom
B. Motorstorm
C. M.A.G.
D. Heavenly Sword
E. Resistance
F. Playstation Allstars
G. Killzone
H. Starhawk
I. Twisted Metal
J. Warhawk
K. Gran Turismo
A good amount of those games aren't around because they shut down the studios btw.
You shut down studios when they underperform, sales and customer satisfaction are huge factors.
ms sees an opportunity to buy them, seems mediocrity rises to the top at ms.
If we are just talking car numbers then yeah, but if we talk about the driving, the thing you actually buy the game for, it becomes the best it's ever been, infact, I'd go as far as to say that gt is still to be beat where it matters most, plus 8 mill sales really puts to bed the whole gt is dying line that likes to get used around here. It's a great game, you should play it.
Motorstorm 3 was unfortunate to release when it did due to real life natural disaster which sealed its fate. Still, that probably lead to Motorstorm being green lighted so some positives came from that.
As for some of the other games on your list, you should be able to answer your own questions.
Socom and mag both made by zipper, dead studio.
Motorstorm, made by evolution, dead studio.
Playstation allstars, dead studio, not Sony owned.
Heavenly sword, dev was bought by micro.
Resistance, dev still alive.
Killzone, dev still alive.
Warhawk and starhawk were both made by lightbox, not dead but devs moved to eat, sleep, play and incognito.
Twisted metal was made by incognito, dev still alive.
Gt is the best selling sim racer this gen, dev still alive.
While some of the studios have closed, most have not, if sony wants to bring any of these ips back they can, they own them🤷♂️
Eat Sleep Play has closed down as well as Incognito btw
Edit: a handful of Incognito now work at Sony Santa Monica though.
Sorry I got myself mixed up, eat sleep and play and incognito moved onto lightbox, not the other way round.
They are still alive but making iso games at the min.
Sony is not like Microsoft who have franchises that are from the Xbox and xbox360 and are on the Xbox One and will be on the Scarlett. Those games have so much sequels and will have more sequels till the end of Days😉
I like the style Sony more. Not milk a franchise till Kingdom comes. No, 3-4 sequels and than giving the gamers new franchises with the risk they could flop. God of War is an exception, but the game changed so much, its not like the older GoW games. But thats not the point.
Sony at least take that risk. And they have developers who can make GOOD new franchises, thats the true.
And when you have a new good franchise and the gamers love it you can make 3 ore 4 sequels and than move on. Thats what i like about Sony.
Sophisticated_chap - Thanks for highlighting the depth of Sony's 1st party output.
Puts a certain other company to shame doesn't it.
Mind blown.
Killzone had a sequel this gen, still might in the future.
Warhawk was first released on PS1, still could be revived at some stage.
Starhawk didn't live up to its promise and sold badly.
Heavenly sword - was made by NT, who is run by that egotistical, narssicist Tameem Antonidis (something like that) who went on to slag PS owners because he wasn't happy with sales. Even though the game sold well. Then went multiplatform, nearly bankrupt his studio - crawled back to Sony and PS owners. We brought his game, put him back on the map - then he sells his company to ms. You can have the rat.
SOCOM had a bad game released that wasn't a true SOCOM game - killed the franchise. Could still comeback.
Resistance had 3 sequels, the 3rd being the weakest - surely 3 is enough of a game of the sales are declining. Only a desperate company would flog a dead horse *cough ms, cough GoW5.
Twisted Metal - had many sequels over it's lifetime. The last didn't sell well, let it rest - maybe try again later. Maybe not.
PS All stars - was lacklustre at best, why would they rush out to make another one? Still might, not sure how fussed anyone would be if they did or didn't.
M.A.G. - I'd love another game, to this day I hope they do a sequel. Mayne that's their plan after signing up with ms and their cloud tech. Who know's.
GT is massive - always has been, and will continue to be.
Then we have Uncharted, TLOU2, Horizon, BLOODBORNE, Demosn Souls - all crying out for sequels (Maybe not uncharted).
One of the things I love about Sony. Is the own loads of IP's. They can bring any of them back at any point and most likely have a big hit on there hands (recent example God Of War).
One of the things I hate about Sony. Is they own loads of great IP's. They can bring back at any point and most likely have a big hit on there hands but they haven't......yet. They have a great IP in The Getaway. Can you imagine if they convinced someone like naughty dog or guerilla to make a new one. In fact I wouldn't mind if they gave it to Bend to have a crack at it since they did a good job at Days Gone.
Other good IP's they own are Sly Cooper, Ape Escape, Dark Cloud, Infamous, Siren, Soul Sacrifice, The Order, Legend of Dragoon, Jak & Daxter, Destruction Derby, Syphon Filter, Wild Arms.
They don't have to just make the same games over and over. This gen has seen new franchises take the place of older ones.
GTSport is out on PS 4 and working on 7
Twisted metal is awful.
Killzone was on PS4
And ya on the rest
Time for the countless doom and gloom playstation articles before the big event. The daily phil interview from months ago has already started i see.
Omega collection was great. F-Zero and Wipeout Sony and Nintendo won't make a new one. So I just settle for Fast Racing RMX and Redout.
Wbat happned to racing games? Of of them sucks except Forza, GT sport and king of arcade racing Forza Horizon. The rest are horrible.
This generation has been absolute crap for arcade racers. I'm hoping we see a revival like we saw with horror games this gen, on the next generation.
arcade style games in general have been killed off meanwhile they are where the fun is at
"This generation has been absolute crap for arcade racers."
What do you mean? Forza Horizon 4 is the best Arcade racer this generation.
actually the game has one of the best VR experiences to date. but it would be nice for a new version for the ps5.
These games are never done and it's short sighted thinking to believe a title like this is finished. Who said Wipeout had to be tied to a track??? Short sighted thinking all around. If this is why Sony shelved WipeOut then they don't deserve to own it. Release the IP to someone who can...
You forgot 'no sales'.
Unfortunately, not enough of us bought these great titles, it's a damn shame and no mistake, but you cannot blame Sony when games underperform.
I’m more curious if there will ever be another wipeout? We all know what has happened to it thus far. I still think there’s a demand for another one as far as I know the omega was extremely well received and highly rated. There has been games trying to fill the void but never feels the same as a true wipeout. Please bring a new one Sony!!!
Absolutely love the visuals, and the world of WipEout. Would like to see the franchise revived next gen, along with Motorstorm
Didn't they release the awesome Omega collection a back in 2017? I don't think it sold well which is why we haven't heard anything about the series. A shame because the Omega collection was so much damn fun.
Gamingbolt😂😂 128514;😂😂.
Gaming journalism at his finest.
Do you guys realize that Wipeout omega collection launched 2 years ago and received a VR version last year????
Who's the editor at gamingbolt?
A gold fish or an amnesiac? 😂 😂 😂 😂
A compilation of remasters by a different studio to the original creators because Sony shutdown Sony Liverpool, previously known as Psygnosis, one of the most storied and accomplished developers since the 16bit era. Previously a publishing powerhouse in their own right and hugely influential in the early days of the ps1.
It was a big deal when Sony shut down Liverpool studio, and not just because of Wipeout.
It might not be straightforward to make a whole new wipeout from scratch, who knows.
It gets even more frustrating when you find out; “at the time of its closure, Studio Liverpool was working on two PlayStation 4 launch titles. One was a Wipeout title described as "dramatically different", the other was a motion capture based game along the lines of Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell.” D’oh!
It's available right now on PS4 Pro in 4k/60 and VR... You should get it especially since it's free on PS+
Omega Collection is free and downloading it reminded me why Burnout 3 and WipeOut games will always be the definitive racers for me.
Plus the MUSIC....EDM heaven.
VGChartz's Adam Cartwright: "When Sony entered the world of handheld gaming in 2004, it provided a new opportunity for developers to chase a different market than had existed before. Over the next decade we saw multiple companies, from both western and eastern shores, shift their pipelines to focus on providing software for both the PlayStation Portable and its successor the PlayStation Vita. Despite the latter’s relatively weak hardware sales, there were still successes to be found on the console, which meant that it was easy to plan a future around being a Vita developer.
By 2014, though, it had become clear that Sony was no longer interested in pursuing the handheld market and this left a number of companies in difficulty – they’d either need to adapt to the shifting times, or face dying out altogether. In this article, I’m aiming to look at what happened to developers who made both the PSP and Vita their main focus, how they adapted to the demise of Sony handhelds, what future plans they made, and how well they’re doing in the current gaming market."
The moved to the Switch from Vita. Some of the exact same games or similar games from those developers. Loved the Vita and glad to see those devs still have a platform to release lesser budget fun games.
I want this game so bad but I also wished Sony would have made Wipeout 2048 an add-on to Wipeout HD would love to play 2048 on the big screen too
