A Response to My Critics About the ‘Homophobic’ Language in Battlefield 3

Dennis Scimeca: Unpacking bias in language is about context and association. It's basically a semiotic exercise, pulling sentences apart and figuring out what the words mean underneath the words themselves. It's slow and tedious and often frustrating, and I had thought not to belabor the point any more than necessary.

The reason I love and prefer Xbox Live is because of all the voice chat options. I only team up with friends and I only communicate with friends--all done through Party Chat. I don't hear anything I don't want to hear. I'm sure that's one of the reasons MS made it available on the Xbox 360.

As for the topic, I fail to see how any of the in-game language should be taken as offensive. It's just a video game, come on.

What people don't understand is the things people say in the game are statements people actually say. I paintball and airsoft and those statements occur frequently. Now what I you were actually getting shot at with real bullets? I most certainly wouldn't say "oh darn. We are being substantially over run by people who do not like us. Perhaps we should turn around and..." I don't even know where to go from there....

I didn't even read the article; I just hate the overuse of the word: "homophobic". A phobia literally is a fear of something, and I doubt any of the characters in this game are talking about how afraid they are of gay people.

just because someone uses a word does not mean they are using it in the correct way and giving it the same meaning.

The sad thing is that the author completely missed why most people had a problem with his article.

The hard truth is that these things aren't said with any thoughts or influences of homophobia. The only person who saw these things was Dennis, the author, and then his oversensitive supporters.
