The Ico & Shadow of the Colossus Collection is something many gamers have anticipated for a long time. Hardcore fans of the series and those who never had a chance to play these two masterpieces were equally excited at the opportunity to play the games remastered and in high definition. The highly awaited Blu-ray disc also includes some bonus features, including the ability to play the game in full stereoscopic 3D. It’s a perfect package, with enough here to fill the appetite of nearly any gamer.
Take a look at 11 games before and after their HD remasters.
A few particularly good 'remasters' on this list, but my favourite...Okami HD. That game, those visuals.
A feature on gaming nostalgia, classic games and my own personal experience playing some of the gaming industries most beloved titles.
metal gear,resident evil,sotc
those are not classic games
METAL SLUG,GUNSTAR HERO,CONTRA,GRADIUS,EINHANDER, R-TYPE,FINAL FIGHT,BATTLE ARENA TOSHINDEN, MARVEL VS CAPCOM,BATTLE TOAD,DOUBLE DRAGON are classic games to name a few.
My gut reaction was to brush this article off as one designed to simply create controversy, or at least, the author can only appreciate a game if it has guns and no exploration. However, to be more fair, one aspect I did like was the point that nostalgia can mask imperfections and raise the status of a past experience beyond what it truly was. I wish more time had been given to utilizing this aspect to craft a compelling argument or critique instead of the article devolving into an opinion piece. I would have liked to see a fleshed out view from the eyes of someone who had never played these titles before. Instead, it left me with a feeling of someone who can't appreciate exploration of a fantasy world, since the 3 titles the author dismissed were similar to each other, and far different from the other two which, while still excellent, are more in line with today's mainstream titles.
Got to say @Warj nailed it on the head. The point you raised about nostalgia masking imperfections is something I found and touched on in the article but I definitely feel a whole article dedicated to this subject is a grand idea. Perhaps a follow up piece is in order.
For the record, I don't dislike ICO, SOTC or OOT at all. They are 3 brilliant games and I immensely enjoyed playing all 3. My issue was that they are being held in the same regard as others, when they are (IMO) undeserving.
An interesting caveat on the whole "technical layout" in modern games debate. Modern games no doubt control and look better, does that automatically mean they are by default better games than some of our most beloved classics? And if not, why?
Anyway thanks for leaving comments though guys, it's really appreciated. Especially when they are actually (for the most part) intelligent and coherent. A rarity on the internet.
Not wanting us to wait until holiday Monday (Labor Day!), Sony has announced all the PlayStation Plus free games those of us in North America can expect in September 2013. - PSLS
horrible month...come on, I know some people dont like it, but EU gets AC3!! do any of these games really match the worth of that game? absolutely not...at least give us ICO AND shadow of the colossus..id rather just go buy the HD collection together
The funny thing is.... It's one of the best discs released this gen!!!
