What is the best FPS of all time?

The first person shooter genre is probably the most popular in gaming. Even after almost 10 years after its release, people still play Counter Strike. Call of Duty and Battlefield series of games are breaking sales records year after year. There have been enough FPS games in the past ten years to eclipse all the other genres in gaming. So the obvious difficulty i’m having in choosing the best FPS game ever made shouldn’t come as a surprise to many.

I would say that HL2 is like a more modern version of the original quake games. Your probalbly like: This guys gotta be high!
Well if you look at it the control mechanics are virtually the same, alot of the gameplay is the same concepts. In fact, if you took the puzzles and story out of A half life game you could call it quake. Quake was nice, these just better things for the same people, half life, counter strike.... quake....

As a shooter alone it's between Killzone 2 & Halo CE. As a First Person game, it's Metroid Prime all the way. But I don't count titles like HL2, Bioshock, Portal, Mirror's Edge, etc...as an FPS

I played most of FPS games including BF series COD series .. So yeah this is my personal experince and this is "the best" one .. Medal of honor : Underground .. i actually like the first one too .. yup BF3 Is the best ONLY on multiplayer yet .. but MOH Underground owend all FPS games with great story-line !

MAG is a beautiful game when played the right way! I meant with your clan and others communicate their tactics and crush the opposing team! And if the OIC is any good, you will have countless bombardments! Very fun and underrated game. On 1/26/2012 the forum players are have a 2 year blowout, join us for some epic battles!

I know on PC thats easily fixed under settings, just turn FOV up to 60-80. Not sure about console wise though.

Personally? I know no one else will agree with me on this but the entire Serious Sam series is definitely a contender for best FPS game of all time (any one of them, that is).

If not Serious Sam, then BioShock.

absolutly love the visuals (smoke, explosions, fire etc..), sound is incredible, (7.1 true digital surround-only on ps3),bullet hit response is second to none! mech aspects could be their own game! Online is stellar! Story needed to be said differently, but very good anyway. vernacular was a little cheesy but very "adult".
What am I describing... ...Killzone 2/3! So much fun!

Most of the "cod haters" are just as much Cod fans, we just want to see the series return to form ( well at least I know I do )

Cod4 was some of the most fun I have had online. it all went downhill after that.

CoD4 was definitely my favourite FPS game because it was the first one that really sucked me in to online gaming. Had me coming online almost every night to play a few games. The new call of duty games (while still good games) don't have the same simplicity and fun factor CoD4 had.

Best I am not sure, I didn't play enough of the really old fps games to feel I can judge them all.

As for the ones i have played well..I would go which I had the most fun with.

Both Half Life's. I was 11 when the original came out, and it just completely redefined what an FPS could be.

Never before had such an emphasis been put on story and atmosphere rather than mindless shooting (the first 30mins or so you don't even get a crowbar). It's the first time I realised games could be as cinematic as films. Epic.

This debate reaches broadly. There are a number of different types of FPS. Some are great for their single player campaigns, some are great for their multiplayer component, some are great for pretty much every reason other than the fact that you shoot weapons.

for me it started with doom, loved it but i wouldnt call it the best. n64's goldeneye was probably the first fps to really pull me in and get me addicted tho. honourable mentions tho to black, call of duty big red one,half life ,Killzone 1,2,3 halo franchise , cod 4 , resistance 1and 3 although 2 was ok, and lately bf3. my best would have to be timesplitters tho , such a classic game .
