Joystiq - Silent Hill: Downpour brings the old back to the new

Joystiq - As we saw back at E3, Silent Hill: Downpour evokes the feel of old Silent Hill games, by sending its protagonist Murphy into the familiar town, where he finds monsters, creepiness, and all sorts of dangerous puzzles. But producer Tomm Hulett says this version of the game isn't just about revisiting the setting of the old titles -- he's trying to collect some new fans as well.

I just want to know if it has inverted aim or if it's like the last Silent Hill game that they refused to patch. In a way it's hypocritical that they shafted numerous gamers, took the money and ran, and now they are back asking you to buy another game.

I just want to see one journalist get in their face and ask them about this, how they feel, if they think this treatment of the consumer is right, and if they intend to patch the previous title.

From what I could gather, the previous Silent Hill game (Homecoming) was created by Double Helix Games - This, on the other hand, isn't.

Vatra Games is developing Downpour and they seem to have a better grasp on how to make a proper Silent Hill game, based on the interviews I've read and videos I've seen.
So it wouldn't be fair to judge them by a previous developer's mishaps.

The only real downside to the game is Akira Yamaoka's absence, who is now replaced by Daniel Licht (who to be fair, is a fairly accomplished composer in his own right).

Could this be the game to redeem this franchise? That remains to be seen but I surely hope so... :)

According to this site it will support both inverted X/Y axes.

It's a great hands-on preview; she goes into depth regarding all the configuration options that there are in the options menu. Inverted controls are there this time (Vatra would be borderline bonkers not to include them this time), but there's also the choice of turning off the button prompts and shining effect on items, should the player prefer a more immersive experience. I think Vatra have merited much applause in trying to appease both the casual gamer and the hardcore Silent Hill fanbase here.

I remember the SH:Homecoming bug when you set your aiming preference to the one you like, and when you enter a door, the settings will revert back to the default ones! :( I hope we don't get that bug here.

Having been sceptical about Downpour early last year, I think Vatra have really taken strides ever since they pushed the game back. It seems to have given them the time to talk about the game and really WANT to discuss it.

Homecoming was a flawed title and probably not worthy of the Silent Hill cannon, but it had solid story none-the-less. Downpour looks to be closer to the original titles, not only in atmospherics, but most importantly, symbolically.

I mostly disagree with Downpour's position. Yeah, the game is not amazing by any stretch of the imagination but is much better than the HD Collection and Homecoming. The main issue is the performance, but that was mitigated by the patches, especially on the PS3. Personally, I put it a little behind Origins and The Room.

Having Restless Dreams as a different entry from Silent Hill 2 is also a choice.

Normally, we would not consider it a different game (Restless Dreams), but since it had a very different critical reception and had new content, it was allowed. As for Downpour, I would agree, but since that one is subjective, we let him make his case for the placement.

silent hill 2 is definitely the best one out of those.

for me personally, the whole ritual/cult stuff was always so weird to me in all the other games.

CrimsonWing69209d ago

No disrespect but I put SH2 over 1. 1 is fantastic, but 2 took it all up a level.

We agree, that is why the writer put it in top place!

PS3 Prices Have Officially Exploded (and they’re not done)

The Ghetto Gamer has been predicting and tracking PS3 prices over the past year. The last few months have seen a massive spike in the pricing of PS3 games, and it may be too late to pick up some of the more rare and hard-to-find ones at a reasonable price. Some of these are nuts.
