PS3, Xbox 360 Successors Will Be 'Primarily Disc-Based'

PlayStation 4 and Xbox 720 rumors have been running wild, and it's possible that both will be unveiled at this year's E3 in June. in fact, one developer is expecting new console launches this year. This is good news for leading games retailer GameStop, according to Sterne Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia, because the new systems are "likely to be primarily disc-based."

I agree. People still won't be ready to go all digital. Give it another 10 years, then it might happen.

Double_O_Revan4513d ago

And even then, myself, and I'm sure many others would still prefer some sort of physical copy. I don't believe in all digital. Plus downloading a game at 50GB each would play absolute hell on internet bandwidth.Not to mention cable companies would never stand for that.

Rush4513d ago

First of all he said give it 10 years meaning current broadband restrictions will of most certainly improved.

And secondly, yes am ready for millions of disagrees...

THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO REASON FOR A GAME TO BE 50GB IN SIZE!!

There's about 3 or 4 PS3 games that use the full 50GB file size, not because they needed 50GB of storage simply because they contain next to zero compression.

Look at a massive PC game like Star Wars The Old Republic...

Yes I know it's an MMO but all the content is contained on the discs.

SWTOR features 8 completely different story campaigns each clocking in with over 80 hours of core game play each.

It has 1000s of fully voiced some times in-game scene cutscenes I mean 1000s.

It's more expansive then any console game, it has more content then any console game.

It has graphics that are undeniably better then seen on consoles,(when you force AA) Even without it, it's still a great looking game.

And the entire game size clocks in at 20GB

Am sorry but there is no real world need for 50GB games any time soon. The only reason some PS3 games are 50GB is when you have so much storage you can be extremely lax and sloppy on your compression because it doesn't matter.

mcstorm4513d ago

I have agree with you there but i also think until 90% of the world are on fiber broadband i dont think physical media will disappear for any type of media. I am getting there with my media i have zune pass netflix and all my media is now on my winfows home server but it is still along way before people can drop dvd cd or blueray. He other thing with having games downloading is the size of storage you will need because if each game is 25 to 50 gb a 1b drive will fill up very quick. If anyhing i think once broadband connections are fast enouch gaming may turn thr the cloud but 10 years is a long time amd technology will change again in this time so there my be something even better down the line.

I still think ms will give blueray a miss in there next console and put a deferent format in there like hddvd as the 360 has sold very well with out it and offers more han enough not to have it but i see sony sticking with blueray and putting in a faster drive. But i do wonder if ms and sony will start to make all game have an install as well to help with the load times. I also expect them to offere download versions of the games as well.

BitbyDeath4513d ago

@Rush, there are just too many places that cannot get broadband at all let alone need it improved so even if a game is 1mb it wouldn't matter it will still be unatainable by the masses.

This issue won't be solved in 10 years, it'll likely take at least 50 minimum.

DragonKnight4513d ago

@Rush: PC games use heavy compression and other methods to make size on disc smaller than size on harddrive. That's why the PC game can appear to be small, but once unpacked and installed is easily 20GB or over. As visuals increase in fidelity, so to do the sizes of the games. It's therefore conceivable that games will eventually get bigger than 50GB unless people want to stick with heavy compression methods.

Ares84HU4513d ago

Why won't it be digital download only??

A - Today's internet speeds aren't fast enough. In 10 years time they won't be fast enough because just as internet speeds became faster, game file sizes will grow as well. For example On PS1 a game was about 100-400MB on PS2 a game was 1GB to 5GB on PS3 a game is 5GB to 50GB on PS4 I'd expect a game to be anywhere from 20GB to 150Gb and ten years from now when the PS5 comes around I expect games to reach above the 500GB mark.

B - People will not be willing to spend so much time downloading data and everyone would need hundreds of terabytes of HDD's to store all their games. Right now I got 270 PS3 games....I'd say a good average is 5-6GB...so do the math.

C - Internet providers will never go for this. Even those providers who had unlimited data transfer so far want to limit it in the future just so they can get more money.

D - People like to own physical copies of their games. People actually like to be the owners of stuff they buy.

So, in 10 years time there will be no DD only....but in 20+ years time...maybe.

Double_O_Revan4513d ago

@Rush
Relax. Yes I know games are not 50gb now. I was talking about 10 years from now. But how big do you think they are going to be on the PS4? If we went from high compression to fit on an 8gb dvd to fitting comfortably on a 25gb or even 50gb bluray, then it stands to reason that next gen the average game size will be about 50gb.

And with things going the way they are with cable companies Trying to charge more for higher bandwidth usage and Trying to put caps in, its easy to see why 100% digital will be hard or even impossible. No, I dont believe that the cable companies will succeed in getting the Net Neutrality laws changed, but it is a possibility would have deep impact on the future that games are moving toward.

darthv724513d ago

we are all still thinking games will be in the sizable format they are now. Raw data on a dvd or bd is in that format because of the medium its on. If we take out the physical medium and look at a digital variant it would be akin to comparing redbook audio on CD's to mp3....etc.

Movies have shown over time that improvements to the compression can mean minimal differences in quality when compared to the physical source. Its no surprise that to alleviate load there are points of redundant data on discs. Points that arent there taking up space in a digital version. Not to mention that we are all basing the quality on the current hardware involved with compressing and decompressing on the fly. That hardware has improved over the years and will continue to do so.

It would not surprise me if MS and Sony have been working on new audio/video/data techniques that would take what amounts to as a 25gb data file in one format and make it into a 2gb file in another with no quality loss. I know that seems strange. Taking a raw 10mb+ audio file and making it into a 192k mp3 was strange at one time too but that is why you need to stop thinking on current conventional means and more digital means.

We have seen companies working to decrease the size of things to the point where instant on and full streaming of high def content could eventually be possible on a watch or over 56k dial up. Technology hit the peak of making everything bigger. Now its all about making things smaller more compact and mobile.

A perfect example is to look at a game cartridge from the n64 and compare that to a game card for the vita. Physical size has been greatly reduced and can be reduced even more with better technology. They are two different formats but the idea is the same. Only so much can be achieved in one format that its time to create a new format that can do more in less space.

zeddy4513d ago

you cant queue up outside a shop at 12am with your friends for a digital download. tradition.

yesmynameissumo4513d ago

Downloading is just a bonus if you have Internet. Consoles will be reliant on physical media for quite some time imo.

Dante1124513d ago

I wonder if they'll both use blu ray.

Megaman_nerd4513d ago (Edited 4513d ago )

I bet MS is gonna do the same as Nintendo and create their own proprietary high capacity disc for the sake of not giving a single penny to Sony even when going with blu-ray should be cheaper.

Series_IIa4513d ago

@Megaman_nerd

Why would they need to pay Sony? They don't own Blu-Ray...

WiIIiam4513d ago

I'd also be inclined to think MS would create their own disc format just to spite Sony, but that would prevent their console from playing Blu-Ray movies, which are actually a major selling point for the PS3. Most consumers want an all-in-one entertainment device, and a proprietary disc format just doesn't lend itself very well to that ideal.

Thecraft19894513d ago

Blu ray is owned by numerous of companies, Sony and Panasonic the main creators, but guess what Sony and Philips designed DVD too, does not stop them using it in the xbox.

Megaman_nerd4513d ago

Well they did put quite the fight with the HD-DVD. MS payed studios for HD-DVD exclusivity and they lent a hell of a lot of money to Toshiba and even made an HD-DVD add-on for the Xbox instead of simply going with blu-ray, the obvious winner. I mean, the blu-ray had the most support from manufacturer brands to movie studios. It was: The World vs Toshiba and MS. <_<

Why were MS and Toshiba pushing the HD-DVD so hard when it was so inferior to blu-ray? We'll never know. And not only inferior but they were fighting that battle basically alone.

GameStop Boss Says Disc Drives Should Be Required On Game Consoles

"It would be great if people had to buy more of the thing," says guy who makes money selling the thing.

XiNatsuDragnel255d ago

Absolutely consoles needs disc drives.

wesnytsfs255d ago

Nah should be optional. Not a PS fan but I like their strategy of selling an optional external optical drive. Its all about Options and this will let everyone get their way. Cheaper for digital only and then you can chose to pay more for the optical drive if that is important to you.

Profchaos255d ago

That's not official yet it's only a rumour

Eonjay255d ago

@Profchaos

But what he describes already exists in the 2 base models. If it is a rumor you can blame Microsoft for really backing it in court but if we are honest we all know it's true.

Profchaos255d ago

@Eonjay I'm not denying the appeal of it I can see it being a useful mechanism for allowing gamers to upgrade as needed however until there's concrete proof and not speculation and remember ms still bases that court submitted document off of the same leaks we see on Reddit, 4chan etc I just can't believe it.

The system would be further opened to exploitation and they would need to release an overpriced drive for consumers to buy for it and sure as they do we will hear complaints over the cost of it

ChasterMies254d ago

Absolutely consoles don’t need disc drives. My house has 2 PS5 digital editions, one since launch. Zero issues with the lack of disc drives. In fact, the digital purchasing lets us all share each other’s games, usually mine, and play the same game at the same time on-line.

shadowT255d ago

Optional drives would be best strategy.

-Foxtrot255d ago

If they did then collectors wouldn’t be getting f***** over with discless collectors editions

jeromeface254d ago

yea they would, discs cost extra... even when you're already paying a premium

-Foxtrot254d ago (Edited 254d ago )

Lmao

We are paying roughly the same now without the discs. There’s literally collectors editions which are roughly in the same price range that have a disc.

I’d rather pay a little more for something physical anyway

RupeeHoarder255d ago

No shock, GameStop is alive because of trading. If they don't have used games on their shelves they are absolutely donezo.

darthv72255d ago

Well of course the GS boss thinks this... that's their bread and butter business. That and funco pops and clothing, though those two were added as a means to supplement the decline in people buying used games or even new games. GS just sucks overall when it comes to gaming. I buy my physical stuff on Amazon or Best Buy.

As for "requiring" disc drives... nah. Not anymore, but i like having them as an option. They had a means back when games actually ran off the discs and were more/less complete. Now they are incomplete and the disc is really an installer with a license to play. If you want to change games you have to take out the disc and put in another. Its more convenient to just use digital. I have been into digital for years now and when the PSPortal comes along i wont even have to go into my game room. I will just play my PS5 from my couch downstairs. I have a bunch of digital installed games to my 5... I'm all set.

Xbox Series X owners can effectively grab a 'free' PlayStation 5 right now

@Julion0715 @ichdich

So you guys won't change consoles?, give me reasons.

Your answers will probably explain why I'm so f**cking pissed off at Microsoft for buying two large mulitplatform publishers.
It isn't easy right? but you guys don't care because is not happening to you.

Lightning77283d ago

No thank you? N4G won't stand for this blasphemy!

SF releases next month hopefully that should give ppl incentive to keep their console. I know there's PC you can play there to but not everyone wants to play on PC.

Rockstar283d ago (Edited 283d ago )

@Hyper,

My guess is they love either their piece of plastic, their corporate overlords or gaming on the cheap.

Likely a combination...

itsmebryan283d ago

@hyper
Gamepass and I have a gaming PC so, I can play all the Sony "exclusives " at a higher frame rate and graphical fidelity. Why would I trade my Xbox for PS5.

After adding ABK they will have even more games at a great value.

Lexreborn2283d ago

@bryan

By that same logic what would be the point of having an Xbox? If you have a pc that handles both ps5 and Xbox games you don’t need either.

Rockstar283d ago

@ Lex,

Bringing logic into it?
That's low!

itsmebryan283d ago

@lex
I got my gaming PC last year to replace my old PC and I already had a XSX. It's pretty simple.
So, Zero horizon was disappointing and Spiderman/ miles ( got both for $50)are just ok. I might get R&C when it goes on sale.

Zhipp283d ago

@Hypertension
If I had time for a PS5 I would have bought a PS5 by now. I intend to someday, but at the moment my backlog is too big. Not only would I have to trade in all my games (for pennies on the dollar) and rebuy them for PS5, but Xbox actually finally has some exclusives coming out in the near future that interest me. I'll get a PS5 whenever Naughty Dog's next game comes out, at the latest.

fr0sty283d ago (Edited 283d ago )

@itsme

"I can play SOME the Sony "exclusives " years later. Some of them run better, some run worse." - Fixed

MrNinosan283d ago

@bryan
Your logic is amazing.
Not even close to all the Playstation games is being released on PC, and if they are, it's years past release, and often in a state when PC masterrace people cries anyways.
By logic, you should have a PS5, a PC and maybe a Switch if you're into that crap.

Especially as 100% of the Xbox games is also release on the PC, day and day.

Then sell the x and get a steam deck 🤦🏾‍♂️

Rockstar283d ago

Thanks for the tip! /s

goldwyncq283d ago (Edited 283d ago )

What games? FFXVI is the only true exclusive PS5 has right now and that's going to PC eventually too.

itsmebryan283d ago

@jin-Sakai
What games are you looking forward to this year?

Jin_Sakai283d ago

Spider-Man 2 and there’s plenty of great games to play that released over the years. Can’t say the same for Xbox.

DarXyde283d ago (Edited 283d ago )

There's a pretty decent slate of games coming out this year for all platforms. Armored Core looks great, Mortal Kombat 1 looks great, the info we're getting on Tekken 8 has me thinking it's coming this year. Sea of Stars can't be slept in either. If we're just talking about PlayStation games, Spider-Man 2 and Stellar Blade are expected to release this year and both look great.

I believe jin-sakai has an Xbox Series X (I could be wrong), but I reckon they're interested in those games, along with Starfield. That aside, Mario Wonder, Super Mario RPG, Star Ocean, and Suikoden I and II are all very welcome titles for the rest of the year.

I think no matter what platform you're playing on, there's enough there to generate a backlog.

EDIT: How the hell did I forget Lies of P? 🤡

shinoff2183282d ago

Darxyde

"Starfield. That aside, Mario Wonder, Super Mario RPG, Star Ocean, and Suikoden I and II"

Enough said. That's my game slate for the rest of the year.

DarkkMinion283d ago

That ain't a deal at all. Trading in a beast of a console for that, I don't think so.

Jin_Sakai283d ago

It’s a beast alright. Lol

“Digital Foundry about XSX teraflops advantage : It's kinda all blowing up in the face of Xbox Series X“

Jin_Sakai283d ago

All these “No thank you” comments from duplicate accounts. Lol

Christopher283d ago

I mean, I wouldn't trade in one console for another but instead buy both, prioritizing one over the other based on games I like.

Jin_Sakai283d ago

That would be the obvious choice but some might only be able to afford one or the other. And you have fans who will only support their console of choice regardless.

FinalFantasyFanatic282d ago (Edited 282d ago )

The PS5 is a better deal in the end, I really can't see the appeal of sticking with the Xbox.

DOMination-283d ago

"A good deal for those who want a console with games."

Like what? After all that bravado, the only game you could name was one that isn't out yet (Spider-Man 2)

Don't get me wrong, the XSX lineup in pathetic. But lets not pretend that the PS5 is any better. You can count the number of console exclusives for both on one hand.

If you're looking at games announced with release windows, there's only one console to get as it stands if you want games and it's not the PS5.

Jin_Sakai283d ago

PS5 has one slow year yes but they will start pumping out games soon and everyone knows the quality of their first party games are unmatched.

shinoff2183282d ago

Did the Xbox get any legend of heroes games, alot of jrpg type games skip the Xbox so unless your not into those types of games Xbox isn't a good choice at all. Alot of us from what I see have stuck with sony for the longest because they've had a great jrpg catalogue from 3rd party developers that xbox just can't touch. Those of us that enjoy alot of different games will get both consoles , I bought my series x about two weeks ago for starfield. It will only get used for a game here or there, most likely anything rpg related.

crazyCoconuts282d ago

Hard to tell who are in the Xbox Ambassador program from some of these comments. But for the masses, the console sales numbers are telling us which way the winds are blowing. XBox is in an important/pivotal moment right now imo

darthv72283d ago

I'll stick to keeping both. Gamestop though... seems kind of desperate to take in Series X units. What could they be plotting???

Eonjay283d ago

Almost certainly their plan is to charge obscenely high prices for a used Xbox.

myfathersbastard283d ago

They make pure profit on used consoles. They don’t share any of it. And they’re generally only like $50-$100 cheaper than new.
So they “sell”a PS5, make their small cut from that. Then sell the refurbished Xbox and get to keep all of it. It’s win win. They get a small cut on PS5, and a large cut from the Xbox.

Profchaos282d ago

Could be two fold sell as much base ps5 stick before the slim or pro drop and resell the xsx for those after a starfeild machine

jznrpg282d ago

PS gamers buy games number one. And they make money off used consoles. It’s a double benefit for them

I just want some games for my series X I have both since release and after weighing the offerings in PS Essentials to Gamepass I quickly realized I Owned anything of worth in both catalogs. And, the things I didn't I didn't see as justifiable for maintaining both subs.

Since then my series X is a legacy machine that I play my old games on and that's it. 3 years ago I really thought from that Xbox showcase we were going to have some great games by now. Instead, it's just been a lot of meh

Chevalier283d ago

Yep. That's why I waited this generation to have a reason to buy the Series X. Got horribly burnt buying the Xbox One because I decided they had games I was interested in then they canceled the games I wanted right after.

Was tempted after they had that great showing awhile back and am glad I waited because it would have collected dust for 2 years otherwise. Couple games out and on the horizon that look pretty good. Might be a good purchase in a couple years.

GameStop CFO to Resign in Latest Executive Departure From Retailer

GameStop’s chief financial officer is resigning, in the latest of several executive departures from the video game retailer.
