The beginner's guide to JRPGs

So if you want to get into JRPGs but you've never so much as touched a Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest before, how do you know where to start? How do you know where to spend your time? How can you differentiate between silly tedium and fantastic adventures?

jacksonmichael4511d ago

So... From the Tales series, they suggest Vesperia - yeah, I can agree there - and Phantasia. How can you bring up the Tales series and not mention Symphonia? On a related note, please buy the Abyss remake and Graces f. I really want Xillia...

In my opinion the best game to start someone out on JRPG's is Final Fantasy X.
It is a very easy game to play through and understand. It's not so old that the graphics make it hard to get involved (In fact, it still holds up by today's standard pretty well), it's voiced over, and is very addicting, and it's very user friendly.

Also, with it being remastered PS3 and Vita only makes the offer sweeter.

But if youre that new to jrpgs i would start with lost odyssey definately.

dq monsters 1 remake
fire emblem

guitar_nerd_234510d ago

to your comment undernearth-

Can you read Japanese or do you feel your way through?

I tried importing the Last Story but couldn't hack going to and from an FAQ every two seconds to figure out what was going on.

I'd love to learn japanese- it's really sad but I always end up more excited for a jRPG if the first trailer I see is Japanese :S

Matrix2k4510d ago (Edited 4510d ago )

Both and even more. Its challenging but in the end theres satisfaction involved

although last story is coming in english next year so you should be happy

Da One4510d ago (Edited 4510d ago )

There's alot of good JRPG's that should have been picked that they didn't...not some bad suggestions though...i'd start with the 16-bit era and go forward

FFVI is a timeless classic, surely one of the best games ever created.

_Decadent_Descent26d ago

I really do wish they'd give it the FF7R treatment.

phoenixwing26d ago

Ff6 is probably the most deserving for that

Cacabunga26d ago

Octopath traveller or Star Ocean remake treatment would fit it better i think

FinalFantasyFanatic26d ago

I'd rather it play more or less the same by have the 3D chibi graphics from Ever Crisis, I don't want them to change the story like they did with FF7R.

I have yet to play her FF game but the figure for 11k and it looks great the amount of detail. If I had the cash I would grab it and possibly the life size T-800 statue and the giant Devastator figure as well.

_Decadent_Descent735d ago

Easily the best FF. It deserves a remake.

Furesis735d ago

6 always seemed cool to me. I couldn't really get into it because how old the game was (i know i'm sorry) but i always wanted to experience it. Honestly i wanted a 6 remake more than 7(i dont feel 7 needed one tbh) but seeing how 7 remake is i don't think i would have wanted a game like that anyways. Something like ff x style with pre rendered backrounds or just fixed camera and turn based with modern graphics would be a dream come true for me. But i think it shall remain a dream unfortunately.

RedDevils735d ago

Better than 7 imo. 7 fanboy gonna hate me for saying so suck on it lol
