Next-Generation Gaming Uncovered, Ready for PS4, Xbox 720, and Wii U

"With the current generation of videogame consoles (PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii) passing their 5/6 year mark and Nintendo’s Wii U announced during E3 2011 back in June, it will be no surprise to see Microsoft and Sony release their next-generation consoles within the next 2-3 years. Because of this, gamers around the world have began speculating what these companies will have in store for them when they are ready to release their next consoles."

Month? I thought it was less than 14 days away.

Wikkid6664536d ago

He said next month... not a month away.

It's Dec 23rd. Next month is in 9 days

tmanmushroom4537d ago

I'm interested in seeing what they have in store, and what the Wii U has in store.

NukaCola4536d ago

Word around the campfire is the Wii U is just a repeat of E3, but I hope not. I want to see this thing in action, I am intrigued, but not overly blown away yet. The tablet controller still looks uncomfortable and I fear the launch will be mostly year old ports. I will watch though. I am hoping for some really amazing things.

xtremexx4537d ago

i want to see what happens

Matrix2k4537d ago

Only the wii u will be there .

negroguy4537d ago

I'm guessing Sony might add in an online fee next gen. Xbox Live is doing well with it and this way sony would be able to invest a lot more into PSN. I'm thinking Sony will allow people to play PSN for free but if they want extra features such as x-chat and cloud storage there will be a fee.

Max Power4537d ago (Edited 4537d ago )

I'll think they'll stick with what they have now, free psn and a premium PS+. Cross game chat will be free such as with the PS Vita with a free amount of cloud storage, but PS+ will offer more cloud storage.

blumatt4537d ago (Edited 4537d ago )

Yeah, I'd bet Sony will stick with Free PSN. That's a huge selling point for a lot of people. Plus, Sony's games seem to get superior dedicated servers without them having to charge us a fee to play our games online. I think PS+ is genius and much more consumer-friendly. We actually receive CONTENT for our hard-earned $50. We get tons of games and discounts of games. Plus, we get cloud storage and automatic downloads. I think the PS4 will allow us to use cross game/system chat, a universal party system, and in-game music for free. The only paid option will again be PS+.

I just hope the PS4 uses the Cell architecture again so that we'll have FULL backward compatibility with all of our PSN/PS3 content and games. We've all purchased a lot of DLC and games and I for one want to be able to re-download all of it again on the PS4 and be able to use it still. I also hope the PS4 supports use of the DualShock 3 still so we don't have to go out and re-buy all new controllers. Remember, the PS2 supported PS1 controllers, so it makes sense. Two generations of compatible controllers works well.

ZippyZapper4537d ago

PS3 has PSN+ that will be standard for PS4. Welcome to pay service, it's better anyway.

hazardman4537d ago (Edited 4537d ago )

@ blumatt Why do we have to wait til PS4 for cross game/system chat and universal party? These features should be included already if your paying for Plus. Just Admit it PSNPlus is a watered down version of Live Gold.

Nitrowolf24537d ago (Edited 4537d ago )

@hazardman

Because PS3 isn't capable of doing it. People think that Because PS Vita can do it so could the PS3, but that is not the case. It has to do with Ram,which Vita has a lot more of. It was never a feature that Sony had actually planned for before hand, which for the next console will for sure have it.

This was all confirmed by Sony http://www.eurogamer.net/ar...

MariaHelFutura4537d ago (Edited 4537d ago )

I dont have PS+ or XBLG.

PS+ - gives you games, themes, avatars and extended demos (game trials).
XBLG - allows you access to your internet connection.

gamingdroid4537d ago (Edited 4537d ago )

@Nitrowolf2

It's not only "not enough RAM", but the fact that Sony didn't have the foresight to include a default way of doing VOIP despite MS being in the market first for some time.

Thus, each developer likely has their own technology in use and they are likely incompatible with each other. So you won't be able to have cross game chat practically for sure in the future. ... and this hasn't changed with the latest iteration of games either.

BF3 wouldn't for instance have all those VOIP issues, if they used a time tried and tested implementation.

@MariaHelFutura

Your internet connection cannot connect to Xbox Live without MS permission.

Therefore you are paying for access to the Xbox Live platform which provides among other things server to matchmake and co-ordinate chat and etc.

Blogz4Fanboyz4536d ago

all the disagrees for people saying that sony will charge for on-line.. tut tut

what, dont you lot think that sony and nintendo look at xbox lives subs revenue with envious eyes???

it is not a question of if sony and nintendo will charge for on-line play, but a question of when!!

behind closed doors, i am certain both are investing heavily in their on-line services for next gen..... both of which will be subscription based

Blogz4Fanboyz4536d ago

lol @ disarees. how many people have cod elite??? you dont think they will pay for psn??

they will and sony know it....

+ Show (5) more repliesLast reply 4536d ago
hazardman4537d ago

Their already doing that with Plus! Plus is not worth the money when compared to what Xbox Live has to offer, IMO!!

Nitrowolf24537d ago (Edited 4537d ago )

I think next gen they will make it more worth it just becuase the next console will most likely be built to multitask and have enough resource.

I don't want to get my hopes up, but I wouldn't mind if they went if the standard 4GB of Ram that's in most computers today (size). BTW I know it's all old tech and such, but when people say next gen they mean next gen of console not the next leap in tech.

I think both Sony and MS are planning for more feature so more Ram they'll prob.pack

At this point all PS+ really have over live is the free games and huge discounts.

gamingdroid4537d ago

I can't speak for PSN+, because I don't play those free games they offer and most of them I can't keep when my subscription ends i.e. it is more of a rental service.

However, Xbox Live although costly, I have found them to provide me with a lot of extra features on Xbox Live that I use and love. The revamp of the dashboard, the xross game chat, party system, beacons are all fantastic!

I find I use all the media apps a lot too now which is unfortunate because I have a huge backlog of games to play.

What sucks is that, the subscription isn't console based and therefore you if you have additional family members there is an additional fee for each account. A family membership is $100 for up to 4-5 people. That's a lot of people, but still costly.

In contrast I got my annual membership for around $30-35 on sale. I wish they would do something similar for family plans....

So bottom line, I don't mind paying, but I wish it was a lot cheaper at around $20-30. That is much more reasonable.

gedapeleda4536d ago

So you're saying that it's worth the money becouse of stuff you can do for free on PC.Bill looks at everyone with XBLG and thinks RETARDS.

hazardman4536d ago (Edited 4536d ago )

So are you saying Sony looks at PSN+ users as RETARDS as well, seeing as you can game online for free! I must be a double retard cause I have both. My opinion is due to years of hands on with both services. All we ever talk about is how PSN is free to play online, but the premium service doesn't change much besides getting cloud and a couple free games and discounts. To me its not worth it but I still pay! I'm a GAMER, so if I have to pay for my internet, xbox live, psn+ to do it, I'm gonna do it. I dont think $40-$60 yr. is gonna really hurt your pockets!

kreate4536d ago

'i dont think $40-$60 yr. is gonna really hurt your pockets!'

how do u know it doesnt hurt ppl's pockets?

the fact that money is being spent out of that pocket means it is already hurting one's pocket.

Sony CEO says although AI "has been used for creation," it's "not a substitute for human creativity"

"AI is not a substitute for human creativity. We position it as a technology that supports creativity. Creativity resides in people. We will continue to contribute to people's creativity through technology," the CEO said.

..Then Sony will use it like the drop of a hat. They're no different to the others.

isarai1d 5h ago (Edited 1d 5h ago )

They used to be 😞 sure it was always a business, and money's always the priority, but they used to have a very strong stance on supporting artists and creativity. "Dont f#@k with the artist" was a phrase they touted a few times back in the ps1-ps3 era, a philosophy carried over from their music branch PlayStation was created from. It's not COMPLETELY gone, but it's barely there compared to what it was back then, i just want them to return to that.

Eonjay10h ago(Edited 10h ago)

I am highly encouraged by their statement about human creativity. "Dont f#@k with the artist" is exactly what they are saying. But at the same time, I don't think people understand that Sony is a corporation. If they don't realize growth, they don't get to exist. When you say 'Sony', you are talking about a bunch of investors. To speak about them any other way is a illogical and incorrect. They haven't changed. They have been a group of investors since they became a public business.

isarai22h ago

Ugh, i really wish people would stop gambling people's livelihoods by turning a project/game into their political soapbox. Im all for statements and having your own opinion, but there's more people working on this than just druckman, ham fisting your political beliefs onto just seems inconsiderate for everyone elses job security when it can result in a failure due to people avoiding it for that reason.

I play games for escape, im so tired of nearly every AAA game blatantly dragging real world issues to shove in my face when I'm trying to take a break from it all. They don't even bother to be subtle about it, quite the opposite, it's blasted and force fed to you and it's just getting exhausting

Einhander197212h ago

People are taking a whole interview and cutting it down to clips that make him look bad and take what he actually was saying out of context. For example he also said things like this AI has "ethical issues we need to address"

-Foxtrot12h ago

@Einhander

Why defend him at this point?

It’s not taking things out of context, he said what he said.

Old ND would never talk about soulless AI taking over so many creative things they are well known for. The whole “ethical issues” is just a good PR spin people who push this crap fall back on to make their statements not seem as bad. So many AI lovers do this.

AI has no place is so many creative based things.

Einhander197213h ago

Well yeah, because everyone else is using it so they need to stay competitive. It's the same as paid online, they didn't want to go that route but their competition was making so much money they needed to add paid online just to keep up.

RaiderNation10h ago(Edited 10h ago)

AI will never replace humans in game development in terms of conceptualizing new games. Humans still need to come up with the ideas and what they want to implement. However much of the day to day menial coding could be AI driven to reduce production time and team size. I could also see AI being used for bug testing/optimization that could lead to better quality games at launch. I'm actually very optimistic about how AI can positively impact game development.

Good statement but hopefully this holds up

NotoriousWhiz11h ago

People that aren't software developers just don't understand the benefits of AI. People who's only exposure to A.I is the Terminator movie and other related sci fi films won't understand the benefits it provides.

It's not about replacing human labor. It's about making human labor easier.

Many years ago, I had laser eye surgery done. It was performed by a robot. The doctor took my measurements and calibrated the machine to make sure it would do what needed be done. And then the robot corrected my vision in 10 seconds.

15 years later and I still have 20/20 vision.

Eonjay10h ago

AI in and of itself is not a 'bad'. Money is bad. Money is evil, and corporations will do whatever they can to get more of it. They will find ways to implement AI to replace as may jobs as possible. This isn't even up for debate. It is the charge of the corporation to maximize returns for the investors. They have no choice. I'm a developer and I know that my job will absolutely be replaced. Therefore, I have decided to become an AI dev. AI has a lot of potential to help us solve problem on a scale most can't even imagine. The issue, as ever is that our monetary system only ever allows us to focus on greed and fiscal growth.

But I am a pragmatist. Perhaps an AI model can be built to help protect us from our most dangerous instincts and habits. And perhaps Congress can pass laws to protect us from people who would use AI to manipulate and control us (spoiler: they wont).

Great news it shows that Nintendo intends to continue developing ports of AAA games to its next gen platform

H93d ago

Buying studios from embracer now is a great deal, they must be dirt cheap at this point, Nintendo is a opportunist, they wait until someone fall so they get their best deal

OtterX3d ago

That is some serious brain gymnastics you have going on there. 🤔

H93d ago

I didn't do any gymnastics I can assure you, honestly I don't know why you think that, not hating I seriously don't see why you think that

ZeekQuattro3d ago

Yeah I don't know where that came from. It's rare for Nintendo to flat out aquire studios. Guess they were trying to be edgy but why flex on this studio. 🤣

Kneetos2d ago

At least they are safer from layoffs with Nintendo then any other company

banger883d ago

I hope someone buys Piranha Bytes, their future isn't looking good right now. I love their RPGs, they're janky as f***, but they have heart and soul.

Relientk773d ago

Nintendo saw the Mortal Kombat 1 Switch port and were like, "Yeah, these guys are worth acquiring."

You can't make this crap up lol

Profchaos3d ago

Mortal Kombat 1 was never going to port well I'm sure they told wb it wasn't going to work but wb wants that sweet sweet 140 million install base

In the end wb approved the project cleared the milestones and allowed the product to release

SonOfOsiris3d ago

Yeah this guys ported MK11 which is great, Hogwarts Legacy which is great, and MK1 is now ok, play it every day

That's next Thursday.

Einhander19722d ago (Edited 2d ago )

It takes a people to program the AI then that AI is used for who knows how many games eliminating countless jobs which only grows as AI is used for more and more game creation functions.

What you're saying is so ridiculously short sighted and truly larking any kind of understanding and foresight.

Why all the hate? Im actually excited about this! Always wanted this kind of immersion, and an AI companion with me all the time helping me out knowing the status of my skills/inventory/progress and giving me tips on the best approach or how to craft something specific is game changing for the industry.

Hate all you want about AI, but this is just the start and I can see the potential already. You wont be complaining in the next 5-10 years about this, but rather complain if a game hasn’t implemented it.

MrDead3d ago

Yes we can't wait for the work of others to be used without the need to pay them so that MS can profit even more from the people they fire.

I_am_Batman3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

There is no chance I'd ever use something like this, especially if it's not part of the core game design, but a layer on top of it. It's way too much handholding. Many games already feel like busy work, because they don't let the player figure things out on their own. Having a real-time interactive guide defeats the purpose of playing the game in the first place in my opinion.

If this were to become the standard like you predict, we'll see more and more video games get away with bad design, because people will just be used to ask for help from the AI companion anyway.

Number1TailzFan3d ago

Well Nintendo don't need this with some of their games these days, with invincible characters, items, easy bosses etc.. they do the hand holding built in

helicoptergirl3d ago

Takes "hand holding" in games to a whole new level.
