Single Player Gaming- A Dying “Trend”?

Game series such as Halo, Battlefield, Call of Duty, and Gears of War did not find success within their single-player campaigns. In fact, it's arguable that many titles like these have forgone focus on their single player elements (which for these was many times referred to as mediocre at best) in lieu of more social, multiplayer ones.

However, despite this seemingly looming presence of multiplayer over the world of video games, many gamers still would consider themselves “single-player gamers”. So, with multiplayer gaming holding strong as flavor of the week... or past few years... some are beginning to wonder about the outlook for single player video games and whether or not many of our favorite games or game series will only be available via multiplayer in the near future? To put things simply- Is single player gaming a dying “trend”?

No, look at the GOTY contenders. All SP games if you ask me.

Nate-Dog4536d ago

Not to mention most of the most-anticipated titles of next year or a little while after that are SP games: FF Versus XIII, The Last Guardian, Mass Effect 3, The Witcher II (on X360, I know it's already on PC), Assassins Creed III, GTAV, perhaps The Last of Us, and many others. (I know some of those titles have multiplayer components but I doubt anyone will be buying ME3 solely for co-op, or that anyone will be getting ACIII just for multiplayer.)

Thing is though at the end of the day they still have online features si you really can't count them as fully developed single player games

GTA V will not be single player it will have a online like Red Deads

Assassins Creed 3 will not be single player it will have that tacked on multiplayer...sorry but you can play it for a hour or two then it gets boring

and Mass Effect 3 has co-op now which as you said even though people won't buy it for co-op it still has it in

I think thats what the guy is getting at in the article.

I mean look at Skyrim....a brilliant single player game, a game which you wouldn't want to chance.....oh but theres people who think it NEEDS co-op even though Bethesda have said co0op in a Elder Scrolls game would dumb it down, yet some people still want it in.

I blame these gamers who are obsessed with online modes, they're the reason why single player gaming is being destroyed and the funny part about it is the people who moan on for online in a game finally get it (Resident Evil 5 for example) and then moan the game has been ruined.

Is this article attempting to defie the entire universe that is gaming? SHAME ON YOU SHAME!

I see it as online gaming is still in its new baby stage for consoles. I admit I do look for online modes when purchasing a game just so I can enjoy a good time with my friends. Instead of wasting gas drivin to there house lol. But I do like my classic single player games like God of War, and at one time Uncharted. Batman was a good single player game. I'm one of those who thinks Skyrim shouldve had a co-op. only cuz I'm not a rpg gamer and would need one of my rpg gamer friends to help me along my way. I don't think it would of dumb down the game. Look at Demons Souls that game was super hard even playing with a friend lol.

I can do without online play. It's completely optional for me, as a gamer. I enjoy the hell out of myself, true, but it's just a bonus.

If there were no longer games with any singleplayer, I'd probably stop gaming. I want to be able to play on my own, when and if my internet is down, or without relying on the suspect motives of strangers when my friends aren't online.

Controversy in the COD community feels like it happens within an alternate timeline. Activision will take the piss with something, there will be a momentary fuss about it, and then they will forget about it and carry on anyway. Repeat this cycle literally every year for the rest of time.

They call that a crack head! Thats what this is really about, its an addiction. People who dont smoke cigarettes look and laugh at the addicts that spend $8-$10 a pack, but they cant help themselves, they are addicted. That same analogy applies perfectly to the whole MT industry. Only an addict that was not thinking clearly would spend this kind of money on something so frivolous. A round of multiplayer provides the same high a person gets from scratching a lotto ticket, or putting money on a sports bet. MT in general need to really be regulated because you have a generation of kids becoming adults who grew up only knowing the MT era of gaming. Its normal to them and they will in turn teach their kids the same by just being a gaming parent and getting their kids involved with them in gaming. Thats why no matter how ridiculous the headlines keep getting out of the MT industry, it never seems to fade or go away.

I'm so tired of hearing about what they're doing with this game, its never going to change and it's never going to value the consumer over money, furthermore the people who engage so heavily in the microtransactions I guess allegedly are having a blast and can't wait to do it some more this year when the new version of the game drops.
