Five reasons Skyrim 1.3 is still torturing console gamers

Patch 1.3 for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim may have solved around 15 old bugs, but it also introduced a range of new bugs.

i played this on ps3 and it im glad they fixed the long term lag but whats up with dragons flying backwards? i don't understand that.

@tominc, that's strange man, im over 80 hours in this game and it has its hickups here and there like any bethesda game but it does not lag on me like it used too. now i hardly notice any lag) but it comes once in a blue moon.

where do you get heavy lag at? is it after a certain amount of hours or so?
http://www.youtube.com/watc...

this youtube video shows what i am experiencing after the patch. the lag is nearly completely gone.

TomInc4538d ago

I updated to 1.3 and still get heavy lag - especially when I'm fighting.. I've heard of others with the same issue. Not sure if the file just so big it became un-escapable.. One thing I do know is that it's annoying as hell!

Pintheshadows4538d ago

It seems entirely random. I've played for about 225 hours and I haven't encountered any severe lag. Just tons of freezing since 1.2. But for everyone like me there is someone whose game is crippled by lag. It's so random I can picture Betheseda employees being grey by the time they've figured it out.

FlashBack4538d ago

@Pintheshadows- Turn off all auto-save methods...It worked for me. It completely stopped freezing.

AngryTypingGuy4538d ago

I have not encountered any backwards-flying dragons on my PS3 version of Skyrim, however today I killed a dragon and I wasn't able to absorb his soul. Hopefully just a one time deal.

It's going to be torture, but I think for future Bethesda games, I'm going to wait a little while until most of the bugs have been corrected.

Biggest4538d ago

I encountered the non-soul giving dragon a few times. It's random and doesn't stick with you. I had my first flight impaired dragon right before the update. It made the dragon impossible to kill. Latest update more of less solved all the problems I had. I turned off the auto-save function long ago. Skyrim is finally becoming the game I wanted it to be from the beginning.

JellyJelly4537d ago

By "console gamers" they must refer to PS3 gamers.

DFogz4537d ago

@Flashback

I hadn't thought of turning off the auto-save. Thanks for the tip, I haven't had any freezing problems (130hrs playtime) but I do get some awful lag for a little bit when entering large areas, mostly cities.
Hopefully without the game trying to simultaneously load the enviro and auto-save it should cut that down some.

this topic is so blown out of proportion...

maxbox994538d ago

The whole bug thing is blown out of proportion imo. I've had very few problems. This game if far from torturing me.

fallingdove4537d ago

I wouldn't say blown out of proportion. There are definitely valid concerns, it just seems to only impact certain playstyles. I have two save games, 1 with 45 hours logged, another with 25 hours logged - both games' framerates are a slideshow, I often am sent on Thieves Guild quests where the marker is pointing to an unreachable area, and every time I appraoach a giant's camp, mammoths start falling from the sky. Not Bethesda's intended experience I assume.

AKS4537d ago

I've seen dragons flying backwards in the PC version (the version I have) as well. I was in the process of aiming my bow and then it just started swirling and flying backwards in a bizarre, unpredictable manner. I wondered what the hell was going on and immediately looked it up online; evidently it's happened to lots of people.

Bleucrunch4537d ago

I have to create multiple save files just so in the event one of the files gets corrupted for whatever reason i can continue using one of my other files...I tell you man as much work as I put into this game if it were to ever get corrupt I would have to stop playing alltogether because that is just too much time I put in man...it would be greatly depressing.

JerryMatters4537d ago

I agree, I leave my system on the journal screen and return hours later without having to worry about reloading the game. Used to lag sometimes so i'd reboot, but since the patch, it hasn't lagged yet. Haven't seen a backward flying dragon either tho. :)

TomInc4538d ago

I'm playing on PS3 and only really need to finish the Thieves Guild. Unfortunately the bug doesn't let me continue =/ Hoping they fix quests in January! It's a good game otherwise.

(-10,000 man points to the first petty "GET A XBOX" reply)

thrasherv34538d ago (Edited 4538d ago )

Get a...PC? :D

But seriously, the backward flying dragons are the only problem I've had. When this happens they will never land. I used to run away from dragons at low level but now I spend an entire hour trying to get one to land but eventually giving up. So frustrating.

EDIT: No clue. Not sure how a sword can bring down a flying dragon tho. Does it have a special hidden perk that does this? I just got the thing yesterday so I have yet to use it on anything.

EDIT: Doh. You are talking about the shout. I have yet to get it :/

TomInc4538d ago

I'll give you that one haha =)

I've not experienced backward flying dragons yet? Does Dragonrend not even work on them? oO

dinkeldinkse4538d ago

Where are you stuck at the Thieves Guild?

I had a bug that wouldn't let me finish the last quest(Twilight Sepulcher one)so I had to reload an old save. Thank god, I made a manual save right before doing the quest.

digitalkid4538d ago

Almost done with Thieves Guild on my PC. Are you sure that it's a bug? Maybe you just missed something?

And I've played more then 160h with no glitches excerpt twins in front of Whiterun stables. Not bothers me absolutely.

NovusTerminus4538d ago

I find it amazing that a game this broken can win GOTY. This is just lazy devs.

kevnb4538d ago

Not lazy, they just always seem to get in over their heads.

rabidpancakeburglar4538d ago

It's only broken on the PS3, on the xbox I've played about 220 hours and in that time experienced only 2 freezes and about 2 minutes overall of the frame rate dropping. So that's why it could win GOTY, it's a fantastic game, just not on the PS3.

kevnb4538d ago

theres framerate drops all the time on xbox, but nothing like the slideshow the ps3 version can become.

theonlylolking4538d ago

Every time you go through the starting scene(going to helgen and while i helgen) there is 2min worth of lag on the xbox alone. There is also TONS of screen tearing on the 360. I can't say for the PS3 since I do not have on PS3 but the game IS a buggy mess on all platforms. From what I have seen on youtube the PS3 seems to have it the worst. The xbox 360 version is still playable but the game is not GOTY worthy.

rabidpancakeburglar4538d ago

You guys must be unlucky then as I have experienced nothing like that. Then again maybe I'm lucky.

xPhearR3dx4538d ago

@kevnb @theonlylolking

I highly doubt either of you played the 360 version. Every single person I know that has the 360 version hasn't had a single problem besides a few random freezes. I have well over 150+ hours into the game, no screen tearing, no frame drops, no game breaking glitches, just 2 times my Xbox froze. That's it. Not GOTY worthy my ass.

maniacmayhem4538d ago (Edited 4538d ago )

Not lazy devs, look at the scope and scale of this game and how can you say lazy devs?

The game is way too massive for current consoles to handle properly. Way too many movable/interactive objects, dead bodies, items that stay in world just too many things that cause strain on memory. A lot of the objects are just not necessary too. Wooden baskets, embalming tools? Why?

This should have been held back and made for next Gen consoles. Or Bethesda should have scaled this game better for consoles.

thrasherv34538d ago

Did you really just blame the consoles for Skyrim's glitches? Any game this massive has glitches. Look at all TES games. Even before they were made for consoles they had an enormous amount of glitches. Comes with the territory. Not some silly console restriction.

maniacmayhem4538d ago

@thrash
yes all games have glitches but look at the type of glitches and bugs THIS game specifically has.
And it's because of the low memory these consoles have that some of these bugs appear. So yes part of the blame is on consoles.

Is that so hard to believe?

I also go on to say that Bethesda should have took this into account and made more of the none important objects non interactive.

YodaCracker4538d ago (Edited 4538d ago )

So it is GOTY worthy even with all these bugs? If it had no bugs, I guess it would be Game of the Decade!

maxbox994538d ago (Edited 4538d ago )

lol there's a few bugs here and there (from what I've experienced) that must mean the devs are lazy right? They've made one of the biggest games of all time but they must be lazy right? In fact, they probably have the games with the most content but still they're just lazy asses right?

If you say these game developpers are lazy, it automaticaly means you're retarded. Sorry for my bad english.

digitalkid4538d ago

Have you even played a game or just saw a few videos?)

bozebo4538d ago (Edited 4538d ago )

They aren't lazy. The game just needed a little more time to polish it, basically work on the fixes they are doing right now - but then it would have launched too late.

It would be nice if it was always possible for a game to not be launched unless it's perfected.
But, how do you know once it's perfected (and don't keep tweaking it and spoiling it somehow) and if it launches too late, it may not be enough of a financial success to be viable :S

OcelotRigz4538d ago

I have noticed going back to a game and my latest saves being missing and having to do certain things all over again, very annoying.
Another problem being that my arrows don't hit the guys i'm shooting at, like i aim right at them and it goes thru them and does no damage. This is especially noticeable at long distances.
Such a pity and nuisance as i'm loving this game.

TomInc4538d ago

But... How will all those guards take arrows in the knee?!

I'm Replaying Skyrim (again), and So Should You

Replaying Skyrim after 13 years is a reminder of the progress made in western RPGs over the last decade, but also what's been lost.

anast46d ago

I tried, but it's a poorly made game that insults its customers.

lucian22946d ago

nah, only mods make it decent, and even then it's bad, and this is after i modded for at least 3 years

Nittdarko46d ago

Funnily enough, I'm about to play it for the first time in VR with 1000 mods to make the game playable, as is the Bethesda way

The 7 Best Western RPGs: Immersive Adventures

RPGs are often huge, sprawling endeavours. With limited playtime, we have to choose wisely, so here's the best western RPGs available today.

SimpleSlave46d ago

"I started playing games yesterday" the List... Meh!

How about a few RPGs that deserve some love instead?
1 - Alpha Protocol - Now on GOG
2 - else Heart.Break()
3 - Shadowrun Trilogy
4 - Wasteland 2
5 - UnderRail
6 - Tyranny
7 - Torment: Tides of Numenera

And for a bonus game that flew under the radar:
8 - Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden

DustMan46d ago

Loved Alpha Protocol in all it's glorious jank. Great game.

SimpleSlave46d ago (Edited 46d ago )

Not only glorious jank, but the idea that the story can completely change depending on what you do, or say, or side with, makes it one of the most forward thinking games ever. The amount of story permutation is the equivalent of a Hitman level but in Story Form. And it wasn't just that the story changed, no, it was that you met completely new characters, or missed them, depending on your choices. Made Mass Effect feel static in comparison.

Alpha Protocol was absolutely glorious, indeed. And it was, and still is, more Next Gen than most anything out there these days. In this regard at least.

Pity.
