If Modern Warfare Is “The Same Game,” So Is Skyward Sword

The controversy of Modern Warfare has died down a bit, but here’s a quick refresher for those of you who don’t remember: Modern Warfare got high scores as it always does, but there was a huge backlash for those scores because, according to some people, the game “is the same/just an update from the last one.” Personally, I’m not sure I agree with that, but let me ask you, if it’s true for Modern Warfare 3, why isn’t it true for Skyward Sword, or Mario Kart 7? You cannot say that one type of game like Zelda, should never change, but then blame Modern Warfare for “not changing enough.”

It's true.
Mario Kart 7 is the same too, so will be the next episode on Wii U.

There's a difference between releasing a sequel that is a quality product with enough changes to warrant it as a sequel every once in a while, and releasing an annual game with minimalistic changes that somehow manages to take steps back from its predecessor.

I expect any sequel to retain the same core formula. But at a reasonable rate, and with overall improvements.

CoD is not "the same" game every year, there are clearly changes. We can use that criticism vaguely for many games, but the number of changes in relation to the rate at which it is released AND the fact that the game continues to degrade SOMEHOW is why people hate CoD.

"CoD is the same" obviously is not meant to be taken literally, and comparing it to Skyward Sword doesn't help the article's cause.

Thanks for saying what I was gonna say better than I was gonna say it.

yesmynameissumo4517d ago (Edited 4517d ago )

I don't know. With MW3, I have no idea what's going to take place (outside the obvious shooting the shit out of people). With Zelda (and I haven't played Skyward Sword yet), I'm guessing:

You start out as a regular village dude.
Some evil get introduced.
You're told you need to take the task on of defeating the evil.
You get the "Link" outfit.
There's bombs, boomerangs, the sword & shield, slingshots and probably some new tool/weapon/utility like most of the games.

The predictability alone is worthy the "same game" label.

EDIT: @Alpha (Dexter kicks all types of ass BTW)
With God of War, true, you lose all your powers and hack and slash (it IS a hack n slash game), but 3 felt NOTHING like the other 2. I didn't come away feeling like I played the game before. Zelda, while still a great series, also suffers from valid problems people have with it too. Again, looking at just the SP component, Zelda is as much of the same game to other Zelda's as CoD's MP is to other CoDs.

-Alpha4517d ago (Edited 4517d ago )

@issumo

All of those are core mechanics you expect to find in the game. I'll agree that changing that would be refreshing though, but many games have that familiar setup. Your point about Zelda is actually fair, but there is a radical difference between Zelda's releases and CoD's.

It's like God of War-- start every game with no powers, individually gain the same powers, with different names, and use the same hack and slash gameplay you are familiar with.

All this is the core of the games. The difference being that games like GoW and Zelda release at a far enough rate and add on to the overall game.

The rate of releasing a CoD game every year coupled with the fact that the game takes serious steps back (the hit detection/lag compensation compared to CoD4 is ridiculously worse) is why people dislike CoD.

I don't like the "CoD is the same" nonsense either, but there are definitely valid problems people have with CoD that are amplified from what you find in other sequels.

MRMagoo1234517d ago

@yesmyname

Thats a really stupid point you make, you dont know whats going to happen in COD lol ill put it the same way as you tho i dont play zelda games at all and wont either so im no nintendo fanboy, also remembering cod is all about the pvp aspect and no the single player.

you start the game with limited guns, you then kill ppl get some xp buy some new guns rinse and repeat

for single player you start you play as some guy in the old game kill some bad guys stuff blows up then you save someone, then you play someone else kill some more badguys save someone else then another explosion and so on till you take out the main objective.

yesmynameissumo4517d ago

Shit just whooshed over your head huh Magoo?

Iroquois_Pliskin4517d ago

but does LoZ come out every year?

Tonester9254517d ago

@yesmynameissumo

If people played the First Legend of Zelda until Skyward Sword.. EVERY ONE.. Then they would realize what you are saying is true.

Foliage4516d ago

When I saw this title, I immediately knew Nintendolts would be angry from the truth.

Face it, the main Nintendo games have been the same ol' thing for many years now; down to the same story line.

crxss4516d ago

MW3 not only plays identical to other MW games but it borrows actual resources from MW1 and MW2, just re-textured. that's where the "same game" argument comes form.

Skyward Sword only borrows elements from previous games in the series. almost everything is built from the ground up. so no SS is not the same game as OOT or TP. dumb article title.

Berserk4516d ago

Zelda sucks a$$. You would think this horrible franchise would have died by now...

;)

Muffins12234517d ago

Not really, the game as alot f new ideas and new art style compared to twilight princes....

theonlylolking4517d ago

MW3 changes from MW2
1.Strike package
2.split screen online
3.new spec ops
4.Continuing the modern warfare story
5.Gun leveling
6.new multiplayer maps
7.new guns
8.new gun camos
9.New game modes
10.Call of duty elite(which is free)
11:Change in art style per map

Yeah, every nintendo game has less changes than that. The last big change in a nintendo game was super mario galaxy. It was so refreshing but then super mario galaxy 2 was the exact same thing except with yoshi-san.

Shackdaddy8364517d ago

Doubt you even played a Nintendo game lately...

jthamind4517d ago

@theonlylolking

every single thing you named outside of the campaign (which is honestly the least important part of CoD nowadays) could have been released as DLC or an expansion for CoD4 or MW2. Skyward Sword is an entirely new game that just keeps a similar formula and mechanics.

there's a big difference between the two.

user8586214517d ago

Everything you just said could have easily been DLC or even an update for Black Ops... just saying

kaveti66164517d ago

hahaha at listing "new multiplayer maps."

That's usually a requirement.

scrambles4517d ago

sounds like they change everything except the gameplay WHAT A SHOCKER

Foliage4516d ago

Actually most of those things could not pass as DLC. You can't change the main functionality of a game that needs to remain running off a disc, by optional content that is installed on the hard drive. It would have to have been planned with the release of the last one.

Not to mention how Microsoft has strict limitations to DLC that limit how many core files can be changed, and how big your content can be.

Changes to that scale could not be DLC, I've had lesser content fail to get approved due to their scale.

ASTAROTH4517d ago

I love SS but for me TP is a better game... specially graphically and the control of WOLF link... That was an EPIC game.

AKA4517d ago (Edited 4517d ago )

the problem is not that the game is the same or not!
the fans want more of the same! with small changes..
but COD teach is outdated cheap and comes out every year with not technical improvements.
it still has the old cheap sound teach, old cheap animations, old cheap special effects, old cheap graphics, old cheap colors, old cheap connections that cod4 had.

i mean just think how well they could made the next cod using a lot more money (they have a lot since the game sales very well)
on a new top of the line engine!

but they even say they could use this old cheap teach for years and still sale their games like fresh bread and that's what they are doing, spend low in your product market it right and big time and it will sale since cod4 got the right fun factor formula and their game got popular.
and now they lost their best "devs" "respawn" those guys are really good! so cod is just death and it will never be great again and we will have to wait until next gen to see cod goes down..

Pikajew4517d ago (Edited 4517d ago )

No. If this guy bothered to play a Zelda game he would know they are all different. This guy is just a Nintendo hater.

OoT you travel threw time and was the first 3D zelda game and stared trageting stuff in games.
MM you had masks and each on had a special power and had a 3 day time period
WW you got to travel the ocean be a pirate and had a unique art style
TP you were able to turn into a wolf and featured a place where a twilight places where you stay the wolf
SS I didn't play it yet :(

Titanz4517d ago

I don't remember a Zelda title relying totally on motion controls. And COD games are released annually, wtf?

GraveLord4517d ago

If you bothered to play Modern Warfare 3 you would see the game is completely different from Black Ops.

MRMagoo1234517d ago

IS it? besides the year its set and the available guns since the year has changed what is different?

SnotyTheRocket4516d ago

Yeah, ok. You keep thinking that.

browngamer414517d ago

This guy obviously has not played Skyward Sword(or any other Zelda for that matter) this game is different from every other Zelda out there-from pacing, structure, story ,controls to cut scenes and visuals and music-this is the NEW standard for Zelda games ...played MW3 the other day at a friends house -could not really see the difference except for some minor little tweaks like weapons-it even seems to be using the same engine as MW2..lame.

Megaton4517d ago

Clearly the same. So sick of these yearly Zelda titles.

Call of Duty Players Disappointed by $80 B.E.A.S.T. Glove Bundle Deal

Recently, players of Modern Warfare 3 and Warzone were met with a new bundle featuring the B.E.A.S.T. Glove, inspired by King Kong's armament in the Godzilla x Kong movie. However, the $80 price tag attached to this themed accessory left many Call of Duty fans feeling underwhelmed.

Spend more $$ and you'll end up In easier lobbies so you win both ways when ya spend that cash

melons18d ago

Controversy in the COD community feels like it happens within an alternate timeline. Activision will take the piss with something, there will be a momentary fuss about it, and then they will forget about it and carry on anyway. Repeat this cycle literally every year for the rest of time.

Gridknac18d ago

They call that a crack head! Thats what this is really about, its an addiction. People who dont smoke cigarettes look and laugh at the addicts that spend $8-$10 a pack, but they cant help themselves, they are addicted. That same analogy applies perfectly to the whole MT industry. Only an addict that was not thinking clearly would spend this kind of money on something so frivolous. A round of multiplayer provides the same high a person gets from scratching a lotto ticket, or putting money on a sports bet. MT in general need to really be regulated because you have a generation of kids becoming adults who grew up only knowing the MT era of gaming. Its normal to them and they will in turn teach their kids the same by just being a gaming parent and getting their kids involved with them in gaming. Thats why no matter how ridiculous the headlines keep getting out of the MT industry, it never seems to fade or go away.

X-2316d ago

I'm so tired of hearing about what they're doing with this game, its never going to change and it's never going to value the consumer over money, furthermore the people who engage so heavily in the microtransactions I guess allegedly are having a blast and can't wait to do it some more this year when the new version of the game drops.

Cheech And Chong Are Coming To Call Of Duty Because Everything Must Be Consumed

The famous comedy duo is the latest example of pop culture becoming one big grey blob

Christopher32d ago

Certain to have some sort of reference to their online store for CBD/THC chews, which is advertising heavily online the last month or two.

Sciurus_vulgaris32d ago

The randomness of the multiplayer characters is one of reason I quit playing COD after briefly returning in 2022. We got Space Marines, rappers, tree monsters etc. all in a series called “ Modern Warfare”.

OtterX32d ago (Edited 32d ago )

I think if there was ever a time for a competitor to rise up and take away some of Call of Duty's thunder, the time would be now. A military shooter that takes itself seriously, not sold out to Fortnitism. Easier said than done, I know... but the time is ripe.

I can't stand this stuff either.

Palitera32d ago

There are tons of MP shooters that make no profit, if you're looking for one of those

fsfsxii32d ago

You guys have been saying this shit since 2009. Fortunately, nobody’s bringing down cod anytime soon, if ever.

crazyCoconuts32d ago

I agree. I really didn't like how the silliness takes away the gritty origins. That and all the crazy effects... dunno. I'm still playing it but I'd love for someone to steal their cheese and cater to grittier players

OtterX31d ago

@fsfsxii It's not so much wanting COD itself to die as it is wanting this silliness to die. Like CrazyCoconuts said, it takes from the grittiness. Many OG COD players want a straightup Military shooter experience, not silly costume time at Carnival.

is this what the kids want these days a pair of iconic stoners who were big in the 70s and have kind of held on I enjoyed their movies decades ago but I never recall the movie where cheech infiltrates a enemy base while chong snipes for support guess I must of missed that one

Man I'm getting to old for this

Knightofelemia32d ago (Edited 32d ago )

Cheech just looks so wrong in the picture.

Profchaos32d ago

MW3 missed its easiest opportunity to give us some of the best Call of Duty maps ever made

From Bootleg to Black Box, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 made a heartbreaking mistake by not remastering the bizarrely forgotten maps from its namesake.
