The VGAs are good for the industry

That's because it's wrong.
Because the "exposure" is just contrived tv bullshit, and it depicts gamers as immature moronic horny 5 year olds.

It is one of the many reasons that gaming is still viewed as a lesser medium, and the VGAs do nothing to dispel those myths, they only cater to the prejudices.

The VGAs does not, in any way shape or form, represent the side of gaming that we all love.
They're like what porn is to lovemaking, and quite frankly it's disgusting.

No, the VGAs are not good for gaming, for a few reasons.

First, "exposure"? Right. Right, because Modern Warfare 3 and Skyrim need "exposure". I highly doubt most of the people tuning in to Spike TV are unaware of these titles, especially when their commercials run every 15 minutes.

Second, this isn't the sort of exposure that gaming needs. Watching the show reminds me of crappy "Spring Break Party"-type of shows on MTV.

Third, if we reinforce the idea that people should get games just because the game got such-and-such an award, it makes the current situation in the industry (bribed reviews, uninformative reviews) even more problematic.

The thing about the VGAs, especially this year, is that there are CLEARLY people behind the scenes who are trying to do the right thing. They brought Miyamoto and Kojima on stage (even if they did inexplicably not give them translators), the awards went to reasonably deserving parties (3 for Bastion!), and Felicia Day was doing that stupid shit for Child's Play at least.

It's just that the good things get almost completely drowned out by the horrible things...and then you end up with an awards show that doesn't give out any awards during the show.

I don't get how Skyrim won lol... Its not a bad game, but the graphics aren't much of a leap over Oblivion and the game has way too many bugs. One of my friends is stuck on the very last boss fight. Every time he gets to the Dragon, it stays in the air and ignores him...

And there's the ps3 version of course witch has many bugs too. Its pretty clear that this game was made on 360 and then ported to PC and PS3... Oh well the Bethesda fanboys don't really care anyway

People need to realize that when Geoff Keighley says, "I'm sorry you didn't like the VGAs this year. What are some suggestions you have that can help us make it better next year?" He doesn't actually mean it and he doesn't really care about your suggestions.

The same things were said about the VGAs last year and he said the same thing in response to the criticisms of last year. It will never change, so stop hoping that one day the VGAs will see the light and become an awards show that everyone can watch without cringing, because it's not going to happen.

I do disagree with MW3 best shooter and one of the Jonas Brothers like WTF?!?!?

Oh and Portal 2 did deserve best multiplayer, probably one of the best co-op games.

In this particular case, that has less to do with the VGAs and more to do with the 360 and with Gears 3.

I thought the same thing.

But I looked over at the PS3 list, noticed they were all exclusive. Look back at 360 list, noticed only 2 exclusives I believe. I guess they had to fill in the gaps because of the lack of exclusive titles MS put out this year. Gears and Forza had no chance against Batman AC since it was nominated for GOTY.

I only watch the VGAs for the world premier trailers. Some of the stuff done on the VGAs was just flat out stupid.

I'm all for giving devs proper recognition and awards but not in this manner. GDC would be better suited for this. VGA's try to blur the line between GDC / E3. Never finding the right mix in the end. If anything E3 needs to go back to the rabid grand spectacle it once was.

The trailers aren't even worth watching all the awkwardness unfolding beforehand. Nothing you can't see on youtube or gametrailers that night.

i believe the great thing about VGA is that you reach your outside fanbase who you won't be able to reach otherwise. people who actually don't visit gaming sites on daily bases.

I only want the cheezy things about VGA to go away other than that each year we are starting to see more exclusive releases and a little better shows. I think one thing we can all agree on whether for right or wrong reason Spike tv actually try to put a good show out there.

wasn't it spike that gave one of the madden's GOTY?

to now where we have UC2
and this year batman 2

they also need to give some respect to other studios like witcher 2 team and their game should have been nominated for GOTY, because that way people who know nothing about witcher 2 would have been blown away and some may have bought the game

I very much agree with what you're saying. This years been great for gaming and there are just so many games this year i can call GOTY worthy. It's been a great year for games and that all that matters! Good comment.

It was fine really. A lot of people surprised about Overwatch won GOTY which doesn't suprise to me really. I knew it was coming. Fan art, cosplay and fan base are huge. Even Overwatch is the most people played time.

I don't disagree with you but I don't know if game of the year should be given to a game which is entire conceptual identity is based on another game that's almost 10 years old...and still current mind you.

Sorry but not sure it's enough to say it was the best game of the year which I believe should hold weight in regards to being conceptually creative.

In no way shape or form can we say OverWatch is conceptually creative if it's essentially copying another game.

To create is to make something and I do not believe that blizzard created the concept of that game clearly that was already done with Team Fortress 2

They simply made a version of another idea that's a very hard for me to say is worth game of the year.

If anybody was to consider if there were possibly paid off this might be one of the most genuine times to think that because I find it very very hard to believe that the majority of the industry believes this was the best game this year.

A good game yes, to say game of the year is to say it's doing something that is absolutely above and beyond in regards to creativity and it's hard to say creativity for me from a team that created a game from a concept that was not their own...

It is kind of pathetic. As gamers, we don't need marketing like this, in what's supposed to be an award show.
In a entertainment medium that generates revenues on par with movies and music, I don't understand why video game entertainment isnt recognized in other award shows.
There are a couple a year, that slip my mind. However, these are shows that honor Music, Movies, and Television. Maybe they have added videogame honors as of late and i'm behind the eight ball on this one.
I feel as though the "VGA'S" are treated as a niche event. Therefore we get, what we get. I wonder what would be different if they were broadcast through MTV, or even a network like FOX or NBC?

Well for one thing they would get commercials which would pay for the event to happen, commercials which cost a lot more since more people are watching. Think of how much ad-time at the Superbowl costs, and that's because of the audience each commercial gets. The only way that Geoff Keighley can produce the awards is with corporate sponsorship, and with not as many people watching The Game Awards, the ads sell for less money, which means there have to be more of them to pay for the show. Since the commercials are usually taking the form of new game reveals and promotions however, that's a lot more palatable to the video game audience than it would be to a network audience watching ads for dish soap and car insurance, so at least we can be thankful for that.

Unfortunately gaming is still a very expensive medium.

I completely agree with you we're just not in the era of gaming where we can have an award show that's like that one day but right now we're just not 100% there yet.

In my personal opinion we need an award show that has the Integrity to not accept any paid marketing to suggest that their decisions were swayed in any way shape or form by special interest.

If the companies want to Market that's why we have commercials for but that should not be time taken away from the award show itself.

I completely agree with you though I could not say the vgas or anything near what those other award shows are

There have been some decent vgas in the past. The last couple of years seem to have gone backwards. I didn't even think about "paid influence!" ....I'm gonna look at the vga's now and online sites like "ign" through a different lens from now on. I suppose the most integral "best of the year" awards will be the gamer votes, not the media publications

Overwatch is great... But it's no Uncharted. The story, character interactions, visuals and attention to detail are simply greater in Uncharted. My guess is that you don't own Uncharted 4.

The majority people are of the opinion that Uncharted 4 > Overwatch.

Except OverWatch is concept is basically Team Fortress 2 I'm sorry but any spinning or dissecting of that comment in regards to the nuances is irrelevant....

At the end of the day you have a class-based game with some of the exact same classes like engineer that are making sentrys with the objectives that are essentially the same from Team Fortress 2.

That alone is why I could not put this game as the best game of this year because the idea behind this game is already the concept of another game regardless of the nuances that they have the base of it is Team Fortress 2.

So many other more creative and deserving games in regards to technical achievements and New Concepts deserve that award.

This seriously sounds like blizzard paid them to win this award and it wouldn't Shock Me even slightly.

I just don't see many outlets giving this game game of the year in a year where a final fantasy and Uncharted released

FF15 wasn't nominated because of its release date so I won't talk about it but by your logic why should Uncharted 4 have won when its the 5th game in the franchise and follows the same concept and basic premise of its 4 predecessors? What's so creative about Uncharted 4?

Why? Overwatch has a 91 metacritic so that meant that critics enjoyed it and thought it was a great game. What the hell is so suspicious about critics awarding it GOTY?

Exactly. It is ran by jeff keeley who was part of gametrailers for years so that tells you something. I liked GT but they had their heads up their collective @$$ 90% of the time
