Epic Games' New Franchise FORTnITE Blends Survival Horror With Tower Defense Strategy

Epic Games is one of the most successful independent game development studios in the world today. It’s celebrating its 20th anniversary this year with quite a slate of hits. The Cary, North Carolina-based game studio shipped three games – Bulletstorm through publisher Electronic Arts, Gears of War 3 through publisher Microsoft and Infinity Blade II, which was self-published for Apple iOS devices.

Now the game maker has revealed its latest original franchise, FORTnITE. The new game was introduced through a world premiere teaser trailer by Cliff Bleszinski, design director at Epic Games, at the annual SpikeTV “Video Game Awards” show, which was hosted by “Chuck” star Zac Levi.

Isn't that just like Dungeon Defenders? I'm not saying it's a bad thing, in fact I think it sounds cool, 4 player(im hoping) co-op, maybe with a mix of left 4 dead; ie: moving from area to area once the place has been over run.

Yeah except Epic didn't develop Bulletstorm so that doesn't count. They're just working on different stuff for now and you can't blame them for trying out new things. I'm sure they'll get back to Unreal Tournament in the near future.

It looks interesting, you cant say Epic isn't taking a risk with this look and type of game.

People complain that they do too much "dude bro" and too many shooters, so they completely change and people still find a reason to complain.

This should be amazing if its anything like im imagining, building up a ghetto-rigged fort to try to defend against with friends. I imagine they will take hoard 2.0 and add in more depth and real strategy and basically make it into a full game. I was hoping for the samaritan to be a game but thats for next gen, im kind of happy they went back to the fun goofy games like tf2 and the like. Not every game needs to be a graphical beast with realistic graphics.

I can definitely imagine this game:

You get a big city with 4 friends to roam around. You then can find an area and start building it up. You will need to go around the city finding supplies by scavenging and blowing up existing buildings to make walls, weapons, electricity, etc. Then, each night, some type of monster attacks and it keeps getting harder each night as you build up your fort and get better weapons.
