Rayman Creator 'Doesn't Enjoy' Playing Mario Games

Rayman Origins, the newest game from creator Michael Ancel, is often compared to New Super Mario Bros. Wii. In our E3 preview, we called it "the best Nintendo game Nintendo will never make" and said that NSMB was "the largest inspiration for Rayman Origins' frantic multiplayer platforming action." But in a new interview with Gamasutra, Ancel calls himself "very different from Miyamoto" and explains why his philosophy is completely different than the Mario designer's.

Says the guy whose latest platform game just sold 10 copies

(I kid, I kid. Origins is brilliant.)

Optical_Matrix4544d ago

I don't see anything wrong with that. I don't enjoy playing Halo (anymore) but its still popular etc etc. My opinion isn't gonna change that. So long as he doesn't go hating on it then its fine.

LettingGo4544d ago

I'm with this guy. If you are going to make a game based on FUN...make it FUN! I'm NOT paying $60 for Origins though. No way!

Agheil4544d ago

U CANT SAY THAT CMON MARIO STARTED THIS GENRE......

grailly4544d ago

it's his right to not like mario, but "bashing" the controls and story telling while he made rayman: origins, that has good controls, but not as good as mario's and no story what so ever. also he says he focuses on storytelling ?!?

Goodbye New Mario, I Won't Miss You

Super Mario Bros. Wonder is the first Mario 2D game in almost two decades without the New Super Mario art style, and it looks all the better for it

Am I missing something? It looks exactly the same, just higher resolution… Is this sarcasm?

specialguest324d ago

Yes, you're not observant if you think it looks exactly the same. It immediately appeared different to me from the start. Mario's 3D model will always be the same, so not much difference there. However, the animation they've given the Super Mario Wonder makes it look more like a CGI Mario animation where as the New Mario Bros game looks more like typical video game animation movements

__SteakDeck__323d ago

@specialguest Yeah those animations are insane.

FinalFantasyFanatic323d ago

You really didn't notice the difference? It's really obvious, I was surprised when I first saw the trailer.

"Am I missing something?"

Your glasses maybe?

Juancho51323d ago

This Mario game looks great, getting a switch for this and Mario RPG. CANT WAIT, TITS JACKED.

Profchaos323d ago

Yeah I liked how much more emotion could be conveyed through the new style at first glance I didn't see much difference but then rewatching the trailer I'm seeing more and more animations that remind me of the Mario artwork from the manual of smb3

Outlawzz323d ago

I hated the new super Mario bros Style. This new one seems a lot more expressive and less generic. I hope it's a good game

shinoff2183323d ago

I prefer the 2d Mario's. Me and my girl have played them all together and mario galaxy , Mario odyssey. The 2nd player option is extremely eh

Why Rayman Origins Is Still Worth Picking Up After 10 Years

Ubisoft is giving away Rayman Origins for free and although it is a decade old, it is still one of the greatest classic platformer titles.

i think they should try to make a rayman 3D open world game for PS5 & Xbox Series X

PS-Gamer-1986877d ago

Still waiting for an origins and legends successor. My wife and i were addicted to these games at the time.

IanTH877d ago (Edited 877d ago )

I'll be curious if they make one. If they do, it won't look like they did, at least. Ubisoft retired the UbiArt framework used to make these games, apparently because the tools were too hard to work with across their many studios. Which is a bummer for sure, as I feel those games having a fairly unique aesthetic also benefitted them.

EDIT: Apparently I misremembered. They did say "hence the decision to temporarily put it aside", but they also said "it’s still there, and you will see other things using it". So it sounds like a new game could possibly still use UbiArt.

Fantastic game. Have great memories playing Origins on the Vita.

I will say though, around 2/3s of Origins' levels can actually be unlocked in the even better Rayman Legends which you can find dirt cheap these days.

Legends has so much variety and those music levels are amazing.

Gamer79877d ago

Loved the rayman games especially origins and legends.

MWH876d ago

Even the first Rayman game is still worth picking.
