Is This the Reason People Love Call of Duty?

Kotaku - You can thank/blame marketing and a Michael Bay-on-steroids storyline all you want, but there's a reason people come back to Call of Duty games year after year, and it has nothing to do with zombies or sideburns.

It has to do with how the game feels.

There's a quickness to Call of Duty games that you don't see mentioned in many reviews, and don't even see mentioned that often by fans, but it is, I think, the reason people who have played (or at least been exposed to) other shooters keep playing Activision's flagship series.

Quit trying to justify a crap game by the way it feels.

ReservoirDog3164559d ago

Well, I would think the way it feels is pretty important to a game. Like in kz2. I loved it but some people were just turned off by the feel of the game.

And isn't this one of the complaints people always use? Quick, twitchy gameplay that's catered to ADD kids?

Or so they say. It's good in its own way though I haven't tried mw3 yet. It's basically a good game to just unwind with. For 2-3 matches. Anymore and it gets repetitive (like all multiplayer games).

Montrealien4559d ago

BF3 feels just fine, on a PC. ;)

STONEY44558d ago (Edited 4558d ago )

It has to do with the framerate. And people say 60fps isn't important, but honestly, lately I've actually been lowering settings in PC games just to be hitting 60fps. To me, that fluidity makes a huge difference in games. I'm still maxing everything out, but I'm more than willing to sacrifice 4xAA and such.

flyinrhyno4559d ago

This is exactly how I feel. I hated fps with a passion way back when bond was on n64. thats why i always played winback or socom, but when my friend bought his ps3 he bought cod4 we played 4 player split screen and i was hooked. the game flows so much better than any other fps. Ive tried battlefields and killzones and they all fall short they may be better graphically and more inovative but control is what it all comes down to. and please stop the mw3 hate every installment in the series adds somethings and gets somethings wrong. waw added dogs, black ops added variable zoom scopes. mw3 has hybrid scopes and support packages.

RedDead4559d ago (Edited 4559d ago )

Complain because at best, they are an expansion(i'd give it DLC myself and MW3 is closing in on just being a patch of MW2), year after year after year. Hey atleast you get a shi**y short campaign which is new

"16 new maps new weapons new class structure new attachments new killstreaks."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...

All MW3 does is attempt to better MW2.

flyinrhyno4559d ago

16 new maps new weapons new class structure new attachments new killstreaks. new modes btw i love kill confirmed hardcore. what do you want for $60 ? i played every campaign, and spec ops and zombies are great extras. short campaign? maybe but def not shitty. $60 for 150+ hours of multiplayer, i average about a week+ on everyone of these multiplayers I know im getting my moneys worth. Someone hacks report them. the game is great and so far from a disappointment that everyone tries to make it out to be.

Dr Face Doctor4559d ago

Gonna have to agree with RedDeadDestroyer to an extent, it's not enough just to add some stuff, that's not what I aim to pay $60 for. MW2 introduced the practice of frivolous adding that ultimately threw off the balance of things, and Blops barely changed the gameplay at all, justifying it with new maps and modes. It's not enough to just add things if you aren't changing and refining the fundamental gameplay, not if you're doing yearly full-priced releases. Though in MW3's defense it looks like they've made some interesting changes to the killstreak and perk systems, but whether that's all for the better or even affects the game that much remains to be seen until we've all had a good amount of time experimenting with them.

ZippyZapper4559d ago

BF fans still pissed I see.

MRMagoo1234558d ago

@zippyzapper

I was a COD fan till MW3 and BF3 came out at the same time so far i have spent 2 hours on MW3 and over 20 on BF3 its a more complete game imo

One of the most annoying things this time around is no AI bots for multiplayer like in Black ops me and my son would play it for hours.

Another problem i have with COD is the damage you take from guns, it seems like 2 bullets from someone will kill you on normal mode maybe its only certain OP guns and alot of ppl use them but its not fun
IMO MW3 is on a very steep downward slope and its only going to get worse they need to step back a bit get rid of all the stupid killstreaks and crap they keep adding its over bloated with all these new things they keep trying to top the last one with and take it back to the way COD4 was.

Four player splitscreen with CoD4? I'm gonna have to insist on a drug test. OT - The "feel" of CoD is one of the reasons I hate it. People like it because it's easy to pick up and do well, even for casual shooter fans, which is what the majority of people who buy it are.

ColdAssassin4559d ago

Looks like kotaku is desperate for hits with all these mw3 articles.

Commander_TK4559d ago

So, let's sum this up. Every article that disagrees with the majority of the N4G, it's "looking for hits", but when it doesn't, example: Suck Sony's d***, it's all of sudden a great article. Yeah, what a great community...

On-topic: Yes, I agree with Kotaku. The flow and quickness is of the controls movement is the thing I like most about COD. Still hate MW2/3 though

ColdAssassin4559d ago

No what im saying is that kotaku is the only site that i have seen trying to get both the haters and lovers of mw3 on their site. Just read the other mw3 article and you will see.

flyinrhyno4559d ago

oh and correct me if im wrong but cod created the hold the analog stick to hold your breath and scope? just like manhunt with the double analog sticks to choke your victim.

Fylus4559d ago

I swear I played a Tom Clancy game with that feature before Call of Duty did it... but I'm not 100% sure on it. I may have to do some researching.

flyinrhyno4559d ago

wouldnt mind knowing for sure, but first time i saw it in a game was cod4.

bobrea4559d ago

People like it because it's extremely easy. It's as simple as that.

MRMagoo1234558d ago

I used to be a COD fan and defend it but its getting easier all the time for anyone with ADD it takes like 2 bullets from a clip to kill someone by the time you see them your dead unless you camp like a mofo and there is still no-scoping the most lame thing to ever grace the game.

Please, can Call of Duty leave awful Netflix-style menus behind

Call of Duty games used to be streamlined experiences, but COD 2024’s UI could be another nightmarish clutter of streaming tabs.

Let's just leave Call Of Duty behind.

anast10d ago

The isn't for you anymore.

BlackCountryBob9d ago

If we’re beating that drum, can we also stop forcing anyone who wants to play only the single player to download Warzone and all updates BEFORE they are then able to do another download from the menu of the single player campaign. I don’t see why I need 150gb of downloads in several ways to play the single player mode only from a bloomin disk which should have that campaign on it already.

DefenderOfDoom29d ago (Edited 9d ago )

The UI is confusing to me because I have not purchased a Call of Duty iin like 8 years .Only bought CoD MW3 because 3 of my friends I have known since to 70s are playing zombies . But I am used it now .

smolinsk9d ago

The UI is the least of the franchise many problems these days. But yes the UI is also terrible.

Players claim Fortnite ruined Call of Duty by letting in more corporate greed

Do you remember what gaming was like before Fortnite entered the gaming space? One of the biggest arguments was about loot boxes. Now we have conversations about crossovers, battle passes, and community outreach.

GoodGuy0922d ago (Edited 22d ago )

Idk. Loot boxes did disappear and battle passes and in game purchases are all cosmetic. We get free weapons and maps post launch, any gameplay affecting content. I could care less about all the cosmetics.
I absolutely hated the days where weapons were locked behind a less than 1% chance lootbox pull where it'd take 5+ hours to have enough tokens to do a single pull and lazy remastered/remake maps cost you $15 each wave or $50 for the season pass that you didn't know what you'd get and these maps were only available to those that bought it so you get a smaller pool of players match with.

Tacoboto20d ago

The "good ole days" are actually what drove me away from COD and Halo 3/Reach. Halo 4 becoming a COD-like drove me away from that only a week or so after it launched and I beat its campaign.

It sucked way back then, going a month or two without playing online-shooter-of-the-moment, and then needing to buy a $15 map pack to play with the majority of the population or your favorite playlist. The "community" rejecting Spartan Points in MCC killed that game's support, too. No revenue = no support, plain and simple.

Cacabunga20d ago

That headline could easily be something Spencer could have said 😅 I had to check if it was really an opinion piece

KyRo20d ago

As times gone on, the COD battle pass has got ALOT worse so they can push people to buy the more premium battle pass which itself is a huge rip off and nearly half the price of the base game.

The cosmetics can be fine but they've taken it to far to the point of no return. Why make a military themed game then have rabbits, dinosaurs, cats, rats & z list rappers as skins? You wouldn't add a Lamborghini to a fantasy RPG to replace a horse and you would never see Mario have limb dismemberment because they know what they are. COD is having identity crisis but kids and streamer but then all

franwex20d ago (Edited 20d ago )

Call of duty can simply not copy the bad aspects of Fortnite? Or is that too out of this world? Like COD, a realistic shooter-just HAD to have Nicki Minaj running around? Or super heroes?

Inverno20d ago (Edited 20d ago )

Exactly! Trends don't all need to be followed. Plus where Fortnite got somewhat better with it's monetization, Acti got worse. Or at least Fortnite has lended itself more to the wacky stuff, and has put more effort and quality into that stuff.

jjb198120d ago

I prefer the battle passes with free maps than the $50 season pass that divided the community. I definitely feel that Fortnite had some influence on CoD having loot boxes with Blackout being introduced in 2018 with Black Ops 4.

PRIMORDUS20d ago (Edited 20d ago )

Actually Fortnite bullshit ruined Unreal Tournament. Epic are sellouts and I will never have that shitty store on my PC, fuck them and that shit bag Tim Sweeney. At least the community keeps the games alive, I still play UT2004.

StoneTitan20d ago

I mean cant really blame them for supporting the game that made them the most money and the most people player...ever?

Psychonaut8520d ago

Call of Duty ruined Call of Duty. They needed no outside assistance.

Ra303019d ago

100% correct! The makers of Call of Duty ran out of ideas long, long ago so they take ideas from other games like Ghost Recon, Fortnite and any other FPS game hat had success hell CoD remasters maps that they've remastered several times already then charge you again for it. Call of Duty is simply a cut, copy and paste and then put the $70 price on it every year. Activision and now Microsoft has been essentially remastering Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare every year since it was released in 2007 its to the point it's worse than the sports game like the Madden, NBA and others yearly sports franchises.
@Psychonaut85 is spot on "Call of Duty ruined Call of Duty. They needed no outside assistance"!
