Skyrim reaches nearly 250,000 concurrent Steam users on day one, topples MW3

Skyrim’s kind of a big deal. Seeing as you’ve probably heard it mentioned more than the word “the” in the past 24 hours, I doubt that comes as a Tamriel-sized surprise to you. That said, at this point, even my cold, jaded soul can’t help but say damn...

Heartnet4574d ago

probz cause most mw players are on console :)

Si-Fly4574d ago (Edited 4574d ago )

I think overall Skyrim is aimed at a slightly more mature audience than COD and the vast majority of pc players fall into that bracket, really glad the games getting awesome sales as well as reviews :)

Canary4574d ago

I don't think so.

I know both console and PC gamers like to think of themselves as more mature than the other, but the sad truth is most PC gamers act like most Console gamers--no matter their age or station, they act like 6-year-old twats.

The only "mature" group of gamers out there is the group that only refers to themselves as "gamers." No PC or console prefix--no hardcore or casual prefix, either.

Well said, some of the pc crowd make the whole bunch seem like utter trolls.
Same goes for console gamers.

OT: got skyrim off steam myself. Impressive numbers, well done bethesda!

"I know both console and PC gamers like to think of themselves as more mature than the other, but the sad truth is most PC gamers act like most Console gamers--no matter their age or station, they act like 6-year-old twats."

Well on average, PC gamers are around 24-35 years old, and a have higher disposable income. Also our taste differ, pc gamers like hard more complete experiences, ie: The Witcher games, Stalker games, and Strategy games like Civ. It's not that we think we are more mature, it's that by and large, you're dealing with a older gamer with differing taste. That's why you see that giant disparity between MW3 and Skyrim.

Hufandpuf4574d ago

Not surprising. Mw3 is not optimized for PC, elder scrolls is. What i really want see are the console stats.

MaxMurdoch4574d ago

neither is optimized for pc. what are you talking about?

slyrunner4574d ago (Edited 4574d ago )

I dont know why you have disagrees ,they are both console ports....They run great, dont get me wrong, but there are times (with 2 580s) where skyrim is using 30 percent of the gpu and on open worlds, it sometimes comes to 50 (sometimes 40). And cod is a stright up console port, the graphics still look like launch titles. these are with the nivida beta drivers, sooo yeah, either they need more patches or they are diffidently optimization for the PC. A true pc title has the latest tech and looks. If this game were truly testing my PC, the usage of my card should be at 70 at least! Yet that could be a driver problem, but as of now, all my other games are running at top speed.!

GraveLord4574d ago

That is pretty amazing. Didn't think the game would topple MW3. But will it sell more though?

gamernova4574d ago

It's an interesting statistic for PC gaming but for the whole gaming community, not really.

Nice. It's really cool that PC players get to play this masterpiece.

PrinceOfAnger3d ago

It has surpassed spider man now
it's 71k+
game did this with way shorter time than spider man.

itsmebryan2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

@prince
I'm confused. Does that number mean total players at one time playing like a snapshot
or total sales? If it's the former that's not very accurate because I know I'm not the only person that buys games and plays them later and that number is not included.

RNTody3d ago

Great, I loved this game. Definitely think it's Sucker Punch's best work to date!

rippermcrip3d ago

Is this going to be the new thing thing? Articles about Steam reviews? Which of course was in response to the false article about the review bombings in the first place.

Christopher3d ago

Hey, just a heads up that the new owners did open news to Steam updates, but we try our best to not allow them to go on daily updates unless relevant to some other news. I understand this isn't everyone's cup and tea and sympathize, but the door has been open. If you feel it's 'too much' please do PM me or submit a ticket to the mod team. Thank you.

I came here to post this link in that specific article. 84 perce t is pretty good. How many bad reviews were there like 5

GamerzElite3d ago

This is good game and Ghost eliminate all fake outrage.

CrimsonWing693d ago (Edited 3d ago )

I always get confused by this, but is 72k good sales numbers for a game? I keep seeing games fail at selling 2.5 million and that they need to be on multiple platforms but is an additional 72k adding much?

Fishy Fingers3d ago

Im not sure how its confusing :\

72k actively playing. Not 72k sold.

A good example is Helldivers 2, 6m sold, 450k (at its peak) active players.

But how many swords swung is what we're all really waiting for.

shinoff21833d ago

Lmao. How many swords swung. I was hoping for how many steps

wesnytsfs2d ago

And its how many years old from initial release.

Crows903d ago

72k is concurrent
...that is not the sold figure.

Michiel19893d ago

for one they already had a huge launch on the playstation, they don't need to sell 5m to make the porting to pc profitable and as pointed out below that number you see is just the people playing it at this moment.

Plague-Doctor273d ago (Edited 3d ago )

Also from the insomniac leak we know these PC ports are a quick turnaround and budgeted around $2-4 million. At 100k sales they break even including Steams cut. They may not sell millions but they are a great ROI

elazz2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

72k concurrent. That is a global number. People who bought the game are not playing at the same time because of timezones, working schedules, holidays, events... There is no good rule of thumb but you can extrapolate based on other games that also released sales data. Then it is clear that the PC release alone accounts for at least 500K copies sold on steam, maybe closer to 700-800K. Probably will sell over a million this extended weekend.

According to steamspy and other data gathering sites games like Days Gone, Spider Man, God Of War, Horizon Zero Dawn have sold 2 to 5 million copies on Steam. So I expect Ghost to reach similar numbers. Probably even surpass it.
