Final Fantasy's comback starts now | More Than A Gamer

Final Fantasy is done rolling around in the dirt and it's getting back on it's feet. It's return to grace has now begun and it's all starting with a game that's flying so low under the radar that many hardcore Final Fantasy fans don't even know about it.

I agree with FFXIII and FFXIV being the two final nails in the series' coffin. And I agree that Versus XII and Type-0 may really help the series to a comeback.

But I don't agree with XIII-2 being what XIII was supposed to be. It's gonna be just like XIII. They may have added some "cool" features in it, but combat and the overall core of the game remain practically the same.

The Troll-without-Bridge is right, Tabata is the director of Agito/Type-0. The writer is mistaken. Tetsuya Nomura is the lead of Versus tho.

Many of the FF's with the strongest receptions all had Tetsuya on the team full time though. FFVII,FFVIII,FFX, FFXIII(low point but he was also working on many other games such as PSP/DS titles), and FFVersusXIII.

It can't be a coincidence that when there is a high ratio of Nomura, FF is golden...

I hope this guys right, I'm dying for a good FF- I like most JRPGs but none satisfy my Squaresoft JRPG cravings.

They really should get Nobuo in for the music again his melodies are the heart and soul of so many of the best ones...

Yea thats not Uematsus style at all. It may not be Uematsu but the Yoko is just as good. Nomura and Shimomura are the new Sakaguchi Uematsu combo.

FF Type-0 & Versus XIII for me. Now Type-0 needs to be localized and Versus needs to go into 100% development.

I know I am in the minority but I really enjoyed everything about FF XII, honestly:) I can understand the gripes I guess but they were never things that bothered me. I've finished it twice and am as excited for the next installment as I am Mass Effect 3.

i promised myself after the complete overhaul of battle mechanics to never even consider buying another final fantasy title and i havnt since final fantasy 10x2 I wouldnt be surprised if in the next game every character will have a gun with upgrades like Modern warefare series hell it might even be a shooter where you can summon a pavelow or attack helicopter.... im a squaresoft fan not a square enix

Lots of people have been disappointed with the last three outings. They feel that these games didn't correctly embody the spirit of what an FF game is supposed to be. These people will probably give you many disagrees.

To a certain extent, I agree. These games didn't feel like older FFs much, if at all. In that sense, they did a poor job. But that's about as close as I get to seeing eye-to-eye with these individuals.

I've played a good 30+ titles outside of the FF franchise, and I learned a lot about what the JRPG genre was and could be. I have to applaud Square-Enix for having the gall to try something new every game- especially with every new generation of console- instead of sticking to the same formula. I enjoy saving the world in different ways, interacting with new characters in new worlds as part of new stories.

But there are a lot of people who are only comfortable with the familiar. Specifically, they wanted the things that made them love their particular favorite, be it IV, VI, VII, or X. X-2 was an abomination not for the paltry "Charlie's Angels" excuse, but because it was a rapid departure from the series, as well as a very different game from its predecessor. But Tidus and Yuna each said the same line in both games, and I think it best sums up how every game in the franchise should be taken: This is my story.

I've taken the approach that every game should be different from the others. I treat it the way people SHOULD review games: I look at what it does, and then judge how well it executes that.

As I said before, though, that's not what people wanted, so they've been rather unhappy. For them, Square-Enix has fallen off its A-game. To them, the company has failed.

People forget about Dissidia and Crisis Core. They may be spin-offs but they come under the Final Fantasy name and they were great and innovative.

They just don't get that much attention because they are on the PSP.

Final Fantasy XIII got an 83 on Metacritic. Is that rockbottom?

If so then I guess EA just hit rock bottom with Battlefield 3!

Don't you know that reviewers don't play games these days, they just look at the box, rate it and make up a story to go along with it.

FFXIII did have a lot of potential but it lacked in some areas and because they take long to develop the games all people could do was write article after article about how the franchise is going down but after playing games like Crisis Core and Dissidia it was never in doubt to me, we just had to play the waiting game.

The problems look like they've been fixed for XIII-2 but i can't tell if the storyline will be good then after that we get Type-0 which if you have been following streams looks so good and better than XIII and then Versus to complete the comeback.

As for XIV i don't know too much about that but it just seemed incomplete at release. The plans they laid out for it looks good so it's just a waiting game for that as well i guess.
