Realism in Games: Yay or Nay?

Carl B. of iNintendo.net writes, "First person shooters are by in large the most popular genre in the current generation of gaming. Their popularity can be attributed to two factors: their casual, pick up and play nature, and their reliance on realism. To the mainstream or casual gamer, a realistic game with little artistic approach is far more appealing than a stylistic game – whether it's a shooter or not. This move towards more realistic games is a product of the powerful technology that now powers game consoles and PCs, and thus something that most developers will strive for in their games. Are more realistic video games important for the industry, or will it end up hurting the medium's appeal to core fans?"

It all depends on the aim of the game. If a game touts realism and isn't realistic, it's disappointing. If a game instead says, "Hey, this is unrealistic, but kinda has realistic elements," that's totally okay.

LOGICWINS4610d ago

I agree. I don't want realism in my shooters because if that were the case then my character would be dead/incapacitated by just one or two shots.

But I DO want realistic elements such as recoil in my assault rifle.

NukaCola4610d ago (Edited 4610d ago )

I didn't like being dead once and dead forever in Counter Strike. In real life you die and that's it, but it's a game and I don't want to stop playing obviously.

This is realism for you: If you can climb walls, make sure if there is a wall that you can't climb, give a realistic reason why..like barbwire or something. Don't please pick and choose what 2 foot walls are traversable. That's quite annoying.

PhantomT14124610d ago

Yeah but it would also be a lot harder to hit/be hit with the recoil so I think it should balance it okay.

@Phantom
thats why in real life, every marine is trained to fire in single-bursts. Like Dice implemented in BF3

gravemaker4610d ago

realistic gameplay? nay
realistic graphics? yay

JamieLeeC934610d ago

I'd rather go for the opposite.

RoboSpiff4610d ago

I think it depends on what you want really. Sometimes you want crazy explosions and aliens. Sometimes you want strategy and realism

JsonHenry4610d ago

^^ Yeah man, this is a really tough call and it all comes down to the game itself. Some games are great because they are not anything close to realistic. Others are great because they are close to realistic but not so close that they are still fun.

Tough call. In the end I would say I've had more fun with games that were not realistic though.

ssb31734610d ago

Some games do need a sence of realism in them but others like wind waker or zack and wiki dont, they were great games and had nice art styles.

jacksonmichael4610d ago

Depends on the game. For something like Versus XIII, yay. For something like Ni No Kuni, an overwhelming nay.

I'm Replaying Skyrim (again), and So Should You

Replaying Skyrim after 13 years is a reminder of the progress made in western RPGs over the last decade, but also what's been lost.

anast40d ago

I tried, but it's a poorly made game that insults its customers.

lucian22940d ago

nah, only mods make it decent, and even then it's bad, and this is after i modded for at least 3 years

Nittdarko40d ago

Funnily enough, I'm about to play it for the first time in VR with 1000 mods to make the game playable, as is the Bethesda way

Loved Alpha Protocol in all it's glorious jank. Great game.

SimpleSlave40d ago (Edited 40d ago )

Not only glorious jank, but the idea that the story can completely change depending on what you do, or say, or side with, makes it one of the most forward thinking games ever. The amount of story permutation is the equivalent of a Hitman level but in Story Form. And it wasn't just that the story changed, no, it was that you met completely new characters, or missed them, depending on your choices. Made Mass Effect feel static in comparison.

Alpha Protocol was absolutely glorious, indeed. And it was, and still is, more Next Gen than most anything out there these days. In this regard at least.

Pity.
