6 Great Moments of Retribution in Videogames

Dorkly: Rarely in life do people get what they deserve. Your boss still thinks AltaVista is the world’s best search engine and gets checks with more zeroes. The ex-boyfriend who backed over your dog has a profile picture with a new girl every weekend. You have crabs. In our universe, God plays dice, but in video games, you can murder God for giving you crabs. Here are some of the greatest moments of virtual people getting what’s coming to them.

Agree fully with the god of war series... those games were ripe with retribution moments...

The God of War series was built on retribution. But the fact is Kratos killed a lot of innocent civilians, doing to them in the process of his revenge what he so hated the gods for having visited upon him.

Although I love the series and just finished up Origins and would readily buy another GOW title, there is nothing redeeming about Kratos.

As regards the Boss, it wasn't really a matter of retribution or payback in the killing of The Boss. In fact, it was something Big Boss would have chosen not to do so I do not really see it as a matter of getting even.

However, a lesser known title from Swordfish, Cold Winter is positively rife with the grounds for unrelenting payback. Cold Winter is the true spiritual successor to the original Goldeneye and one of only a very few games where I refused to go to bed until a certain character in the game was dead dead dead.

The developer's ability to make you despise a virtual individual and thirst for his demise is deftly handled in a manner rarely seen.

MW was an excellent videogame. They messed up Spec Ops big time, but aside from this it was a huge step in the right direction initially. Most notably, at launch it seemed to come from a very cohesive creative vision that was felt across gameplay, to story to art style/visual direction. It was also very notably written by prominent ex-Naughty Dog guys that quit almost immediately before release.

That COMPLETELY dissolved through post-launch content and the full pivot to a "cross-mode" narrative that completely obliterated the cohesion in overall story direction. Warzone then "became" the new face of Call of Duty and the franchise completely removed itself from anything remotely creatively "good". It is a pure money machine, so I kinda get why they're doing it....but I personally completely lost interest.

I would love to see Infinity Ward move off CoD and get to make their own product with full control. They clearly have some massive talent in their ranks but it's perverted by Activision's corporate interests.
