Five Mistakes The Old Republic Can’t Make

FF: At this stage in The Old Republic’s development, we’re hearing a lot about its “innovative” fully-voiced quests (seven years after EQ2 tried it) but thanks to the closed beta NDA we’re not hearing too much about specific other features. If The Old Republic wants to not just complete against World of Warcraft, but survive past its first month and not become another MMO casualty, there are some mistakes in the MMO genre that it must avoid.

the united states does not equal the world

Doesn't it take up at least 51% of the MMO market when discounting gold farmers?

I can't really argue with this list. I would add one more thing though, which kills all MMO's if not done right: have a good launch. What I mean by this is, have enough and strong servers that will handle the millions of people who will be playing. If everyone can't get on at launch, they will get mad, then get bored, and go somewhere else. I can't think of one MMO (even WoW) that had a GREAT launch, though some have been ok. And then many have been downright disasters. They need to avoid this if possible.

As for bad MMO launches, I remembered this article from a while ago. fun read.

ok fuck the idea of buying things with real money. I'd rather just pay $10 or $15 a month and earn stuff. Also I hope ToR
is how SWG was pre-NGE or whatever it was called. Like when there was a shitload of ways to play and being a jedi was actual work

Agree with all but the first. The cross-server dungeon feature let people find groups and get them done faster than normal. If you only have a little time to play, you can get in an instance or 2 quickly.

Also, before if someone dropped / DCed or you found you had a bad tank, healer, or dps, you'd end up having to hearth and spam for a bit for a new replacement, and then run all the way back. And depending on the population size or composition, it'd take a while to find a tank or healer. Also, you can vote kick the bad players most of the time.

As for the rest of the ideas, I really hope they don't kill it with a cash shop. Selling pets or mounts doesn't really hurt, but gear or potions to level faster when you're already paying a monthly fee is a bit annoying. I've only seen that stuff in free-to-play MMOs as its one of their only ways to make money off people.

I loved this game and have played since launch but don't let this article fool you, this game is a step above life support. While they are still technically updating the game, the updates are few and far between and there is a significant lack of quality control, so many little bugs that have been present for years.

The updates felt flimsy to me also. Stopped playing in 2021.

This game got a huge update last year didn't it with more content?

PapaBop400d ago

They promoted it as an expansion yet offered like 3-4 hours of content. The game is amazing and easily one of the best Star Wars games ever made but content drops are so few and far between.
