The New York Times' Matt Richtel reported on November 16, 2007, that NPD analyst Anita Frazier's take on this year sales and Guitar Hero, and Frazier's expectation for the PS3.

But in all honesty, the post doesn't really add anything new. Yes, Naughty Dog is owned by Sony, so that almost automatically knocks out the possibility of this game coming to the X360. Then the article goes to say that load-free times are possible with a hard drive, which not all X360's have. Also, they claim that it would be a a different game if it were ported. So what's the point of your post?

I have to agree in some part. I understand that this site, especially, is driven by fans of their corresponding system, but it's not necessarily just Sony fans. In all fairness, I think all system fans are guilty of the things you mention. However, you are in a lucky position to own all three consoles and that makes you a fan of gaming, which I commend.

Most droids whom reported on this story did so 2 or 3 times each. Its sad. I know loyal PS3 owners are desperately waiting for a killer app so I guess I can understand where their need to sensor this type of news comes from. It makes me glad that I can enjoy all 3 consols and enjoy games like Drake and 360 exclusive with out blind allegiance getting in the way of my fun.

I am absolutely perplexed that EVERYONE not just xbots are neglecting to admit that the ps3 sold 5.6 million units in 1 year.... This is without "games" as some would put it. Even if the ps3 stayed at this snail like pace, it would be sitting exactly where the 360 is in the year to come. We all know games are rolling in already at the end of this year. Each one is a great AAA title as well. Ratchet/Uncharted, not so sure about haze.

I imagine sony didn't expect to sell 12 million units in one year without any of its major franchise games, or at least an "SSX" for the ps2.. type game for the ps3. No way in hell did they think niche games like Lair or HS would do that much for sales.

It irritates me to NO end that going at the same pace as the 360 (IN THE FIRST G.D YEAR) equates to disaster on epic levels.. that the ps3 needs saving yadda yadda.

No one cared about the 360 until Gears came out. Im sorry, but its 100% true.

The ps3 has amazing games.. but are trounced in this current atmosphere where the 360 is dominate. Xbots/PS3loyalists all have to agree that reviews for the PS3 for recent releases have had to stretch to find something wrong with the game. While gameplay glitches/controls/problems are overlooked on the 360.. because reviewers claim other things make up for it.. its as if the PS3 can never catch a break. I'm JUST talking about Ratchet & Clank, and Uncharted here:

Or it gets an amazing review only to get an 8/10. No Cons what so ever.. Now say what you want.. but its just ODD that this happens to almost every ps3 super title. If a review has the same criteria in it that say made Gears an AAA Or Bioshock, then the same criteria SHOULD apply to the ps3. It doesn't. Innovative Gameplay/Interesting Story for ps3 titles means 8. No one wants to give the PS3 an AAA title for some strange reason.

The PS3 has broken every BS rumor down. The hardware cant make games... Right.. The hardware cant make amazing games that CANT be done on the 360.. SEE Uncharted. Multiplats cant be made Equally... See COD4. PS3 Has NO games.. It has about 1600 dollars worth of good titles now, I'd say thats plenty for a person who understands the PS3 is NEW.

This time next year, hopefully things will be back to healthy competition.

I agree with you. Most of those writers are columnists. They are obligated to write something. The problem, many of them are usually not fully aware of the topics they write about, giving they don't consider the fact that this industry grows quickly and things change sometimes overnight like when a game is released. About the hero thing, I don't think a console that needs a hero is a good console. A good console is that is well built with excellent specs and gives the user an advantage that is precieved as useful. So mario is Wii hero, Xboxs halo is their hero. But, Ps3 is it self is a hero that has many great games already released and more coming up.. Don't forget God of War ( the best game ever in my opinion, along with Halo 3).

I think PS3 is doing a little better.

I get the feeling XBOX 360 fans need any bad news they can find on the PS3 because it sold 2000 more than last month. But most importantly because XBOX 360 solid like 200,000 less than September.

Ever since the NPD, I've seen some attacks on the PS3 more petty than usual. Like people rubbing in how bad the NPD was for PS3. Is that news? We saw the numbers with our own eyes already.

XBOX 360 is still very strong, and it's gonna sell more than PS3 but Sales were especially high in September for obvious reasons.

If you're working at a gameshop, I can't understand your comment about the 360 having a line for getting games, when several analysts have indicated the 360 will outsell the PS3 at least 2:1 this Christmas.

With that logic, the line for buying a 360 will be twice as long as least as that one for the PS3.

Thing I agree on: don't get a Wii. UNLESS you like Super Mario and Zelda (and a lot of garbage minigames). I must say, for those really young kids it is an option though.

I think this is going somewhere. Sony needs to make a new Twisted Metal with their own characters. Have Jaffe come back to write it and direct it. It would sell like CRAZY! Then, have a fighter...but hier the guys who worked on Power Stone 2 to do it. That game is awesome!

I think they could make a solid game here. Just have Crash Bandicoot as the final boss and it'll do just fine.

The Wii has quite a few games that I've enjoyed:

LoZ:TP, MP3, BWii, And Wii Sports I suppose. That's more than enough for me, as I don't consider myself someone who lives to play games all day and doesn't have an attention span long enough to play one twice. However, I still have not gotten SMG, and SSBB will come out next year, accompanied hopefully by Disaster:Day of Crisis. Later on, there will be this new ruins RPG "Fragile" that looks interesting.

With the 73k the PS3 sold in EU last week, that's over 150k dualshocks/sixaxis's over that wiimote. PS3 is up in Europe and Japan. They may need a hero in america, but who needs a savior in Japan and a saint in EU? I think this is the last little blog/articles left about Sony's needs. And I agree This moth is going to be good for Sony... but it's still not going to eclipse their competition. I see R&CFTOD sales have reached over 200,000 world wide on simexchange, so that bodes well for the rest of the month and into Christmas... but What Sony needs is their install base to actually buy games. I don't get what the hell people are buying for their ps3s? Blu-rays I suppsoe, since those numbers are incrediblky strong. It's almost as if everyone bought a ps3 for the blu-ray player and only 300 to 500,000 bought it to game with since hardly any games ever sell past 500,000 on the ps3. Resistance, Motorstorm are the only 2 that has sold 2 million units world wide.

R&CFTOD is expected to hit 1.10 million but that's by October of next year. So, really... sony needs to have a better strat invloved. I'm sure Insomniac doesn't mind waiting for it to hit a million units as Sony foots the bill for all the advertising and production cost, but it's still a little off putting to know Ps3 buyers aren't buying games for their systm near fast enough.

Games like Oblivion, Madden, and Nija Gaiden Sigma are close or well over 600k. EA said the PS3 version of FIFA accounts for 75% of sales in Europe! Ratchet & Clank, was only one day of sales in Japan reported for the entire week. It was released Nov. 11, and Heavenly Sword was released Nov.15.

360 had 100% of next gen market with no xbox 1. What did xbox owners have to buy other than the Fears and Saint's Row's? Oblivion (2 million) and Gears (over 4 million) were the phenomenal sellers of the bunch for 360 first year.

Sony is working with all new ip for PS3 year 1. Ratchet was the only familiar face. Drake, Ratchet, Warhawk, and Heavenly Sword will go multiplatinum soon..Drake being first to sell 2 million quick. I have no clue how many Warhawk's have been sold (has to be close to 1 million). I say PS3 did damn good on the games front than many would have you believe. Christmas will push these games very well. Time will tell all...but 2008......DMC4, MGS4, Disgaea 3 (japan), Tekken 6, GTAIV, see when those familiar faces pop up early 08 around the..well I don't want to gloat...mad PS3 games of 2008! We know the list!

I do believe Sony does need to cut ties to the PS2. Keeping the PS2 around is also letting develophers target Wii. If they dropped the PS2 would anyone even take a chance on making a game for the Wii knowing it just doesn't sell.

What Sony doesn't need is those games that are just as good if not better on another system!

Sony needs to get those games finished but make sure those game are TOP NOTCH! An example would be Haze. If this game is not everything it can be by the December launch date, delay it. If Sony keeps rushing these "what-could-be" great games out the door, the PS3 will fail!

If the game has the hype behind it, then it needs to match it. That is a big task but it can be done. There are always going to be those who can rip everything apart and complain but that is life. But their games to do have to hit a certain level.

The 360 has those games. The games that go above and beyond. Sony has had the chance to have those games to but they have fallen short of the target.

I am not a fan boy of either system, I love them both and I support them both. I love my 360 and the PS3. Both systems have serious potential. The 360 has the online system going and the games are great.

Sony has an incredible Idea on the Home community and could really make something impressive. At the moment their online system fails to impress. They are making head way though.

As for the games, most have not been top notch yet. Great in idea but I FEEL they were rushed. Lair could have been incredible in my book, but their wasn't enough time to get some of the frame rate problems and control issues fixed. I know some are going to argue with me on that and that is fine. Just the way i see it.

Sony has some killer IP's and these games are coming. Killzone 2 can be a major seller, Drakes Fortune has already impressed me big time...I am going to get it when I see that it is out. MGS looks awesome!

I loved the old way of system leadership. Nintendo had Mario, Sega had Sonic. I would love to see those leaders come back.

If Sony can make a deal with Konami or something, Snake would make a killer system hero! Imagine that. Or possible Killzone would make a killer leader.

Microsoft has the Spartan. Hey Halo is good but not great in my book! They need to have a true leader. I am sure the Halo Spartan is a good choice, just not my cup of tea!

PS3 indeed does NOT need a hero. One thing I like about Sony is the fact that they don't rely on one game to sell the console, though it does kinda seem like it with KZ2.PlayStation has Nathan Drake, Nathan Hale, Kratos, Ratchet & Clank, Jak and Daxter, used to have Crash Bandicoot, FF characters, and I honestly would think the Chernovan vehicles in Warhawk would be great!! I know someone up above said the Eucadian warhawk, but I honestly like the Chernovan one most, it looks like one of the nazi german fighter bombers that was closest to the 1000 1000 1000 requirements, but i forget its name....
Also chernovans have a badass looking tank!

...the PlayStation 3 has/will have enough heroes. With "has" I mean, that it already has Final Fantasy, MGS, God of War, etc.
Once the PS3 sales really pick up and match those of the Wii I am sure more developers will jump on the bandwagon and create new, innovative PS3 games. I really don't worry about PS3's future, the future is infact very bright.

when you add up the numbers for the PlayStation 2 version with guitar and the version without guitar you see that the game sold 502,800 units on Sony's system in total, making the PlayStation 2 the most popular system for Guitar Hero 3.

No wait... they won't be. PS3's saviour will be Little Big Planet's cute little characters. A few hardcore gamers are underestimating the potential of LBP, but I personally am more excited for that game than for FF13, MGS4, KZ2, GT5, Wipeout, Tekken, Motorstorm 2 Getaway 3, Resistance 2 and so on. the thing is Sony never really had one. It is usually a first paty character from which the consoles brand relies on but all Sony biggest games are third-party and if they go EXCLUSIVE, how can you call them your mascot.

I used to think it was that fury fox game crash band but look at what happen it was third party.

They will say MGS and FF now but if that game goes multi and I think it will, say good bye to that.

If anything it needs to be a sony only game with no doubts of loosing it to other consoles. I never thought Sony needed one in the first place.

The only game that I could think of really is GranTurismo - but the hero in that obviously is creator Kazunori Yamauchi-san.
Which of the hundreds of cars must we pick? Definitely a Japanese made, probably the mighty Nissan Godzilla or Rallye cult-fave Subaru Impreza as a hero or a mascot? - they have to get permission first from the manufacturers.

Or just stick to MGS's Soild Snake... which he used to be, but then...

i dont think the majority of people get it. this go round will be very different. when you say ps3 is doing as good (or bad) as the 360 did at this time thats not a good thing for sony. ps1 and ps2 destroyed the competition before. naturaly expectations for ps3 is expected to be higher, why should the 360 ever sell better any where than the ps3? sony is in tge position that there in not because of anything that microsft did right. sony may have just tried to fight too many fights at once (blue ray). and over priced their system out of the box. they have been repairing some of the blunders but many people may have choosen to go with another system.imo i think this time more than any other, we may have to own all of the systems to fully enjoy the games this time around, due to the fact that there is so much parody. jmo

You are wise, but fans are not going to accept this answer, you think a person that spent 500.00 dollars on a system wants to hear that kind of statement? Sony fans are spoiled and truly don't understand that sony has never really had any comp. Really look at who they had to compete with. This is why Sony never really had a problem with having late software
hits. Lets be honest Dreamcast had the best games for any release of a system, it was much better then PS2, but Sega shot themselves in the foot by releasing the Sega Saturn. So, has it been the blunders of other companies that has kept Sony so high on the video game chain, or has it really been the hard work of Sony?

18.2 said it best, Sony is taking a hit in the software department. All the fans of other systems know Sony is going to sell, it has a billion fans. What Sony has to do is change their campaign. Their approach has been more towards the Blu-ray technology. I think Sony feel into this trap where as long as people see the play station logo on the electronic people are going to go out and buy it no questions asked. Now that has not played to their advantage. So, has to come up with a way to make people get up and get out and spend money. I want to know if Sony took a big loss by dropping the price early?

TThe ps3 needs its GTA tho, I agree; A game that drives adoption of the platform. Not sure if it will get one this gen, but candidates are Unreal Tournament 3, MGS4, GT5, KZ2, Socom Confrontation. I dont think GTA4 will do it cause its cross platform. The price needs to get down to $299 fast. I wonder if UT3 will be to PS3 as Gears was to 360.

I think the platform has a lot of original and great titles already and deserves more credit than it is getting -- Heavenly Sword is stunning, Folklore is new and imaginitive, Uncharted is visceral and cinematic.

I'm not sure its a bad strategy on Sony's part to keep the PS2 alive. Titles such as Manhunt 2 are still coming out for it, subsidizing the losses on the PS3 until it can become profitable. I think eventually once the PS3 price gets down the transition will occur and all will be well.

If not for Sony fanboys and AV enthusiasts the PS3 would be dead already and no hero is going to change that.

I'm a PS3 owner so don't try it. I can see truth when it's staring right at me. The PS3 is in trouble, it's not failing but it is in some trouble. I play on my Wii and 360 far more than I do my PS3. The 360 is obvious I'm a FPS nut but the 360 also has Live wich is like crack (never done it I'm just assuming) The Wii is very very fun dispite it's graphical shortcommings and Nintendo games are classics. The PS3 does have Haze comming up :-) and there is UT3 (I don't like Epic so I'm not buying) Killzone 2 looks good but can it play good (I hope some of the environments change because those same textures would get boring) Bottem line IMO is the PS3 needs a big boost and Blu-Ray isn't helping. They need MGS4 and GOW3 to come out early and save this console.

As you can see by my post my writing skills need improvment but practice makes perfect :-)
