zConnection: Sengoku Review

Connor Beaton writes: "Sengoku, the latest in the line of Paradox’s releases, was developed by Paradox themselves, and puts players in the shoes of a Japanese clan leader during the Sengoku era. With a strong focus on diplomacy and politics, the game gives you one major target to aim for: become shogun of Japan for at least three years. It is not an easy task."

Having played EU3 it's still quite a challenge to get a hold of.

The fun being the game makes it more personal. You can start the game as a mere subordinate to the overall clan and work your way up from there. It creates an amusing 'hands off' approach as your clan leader requisitions your own troops (you can't control them) to fight the clan wars. You can create your own personal retinue and that you can controll.

If you don't like the idea of waiting and plotting your own insurrection, you can start as clan leader if you like. Giving you overall controll of troops etc, though you must keep your subordinates solvent lest they rebel on yo ass.

One thing I will say is that the relationships between characters could have been much...more? A numerical relationship meter is all well and good, and it works, but seeing as they were going for a more personal, character centric strategy game, it could have been deeper(having said that, I don't know how that could be done).

Decent game for £20.

Nintendo Life: Sengoku Review

Nintendo Life: Given the popularity of arcade titles like Final Fight and Double Dragon, the beat 'em up genre was a big draw in arcades during the late eighties and early nineties. Hoping to cash in on some of this success, SNK created its own unique take on the genre with Sengoku for its Neo Geo system. While the game borrows many of the same tried and true conventions of other brawlers of the time period, it did manage to inject a unique theme and a few interesting gameplay twists to go along with it.
