What if Final Fantasy Went Back to its Roots?

How many times have we heard fellow gamers lament that the Final Fantasy series is terrible these days, and how they wish that Square Enix would only make 'em like they used to? On one hand, at this point it seems like Final Fantasy has a virtually unpleasable fan base. No matter what Square Enix does with the franchise, somebody who wants a carbon copy of an earlier game will be unsatisfied. On the other hand, some of Square Enix's recent design decisions have been very unpopular and have detracted from the general enjoyment of the Final Fantasy games.

Make FF games like FF 8 was. That was the best one (imo). It was great! Side quests, chocobo forests, free-roaming, towns, shops, a world map, the Ragnarok, GF's, magic junctioning, etc.

@CrescentFang
I disagree. I loved the love story approach. It was just amazing. I wish they'd make a movie based on FF 8. However, I do agree that Triple Triad was an awesome card game! I re-bought FF 8 from PSN awhile back and have played about halfway through it again. I've still got the original strategy guide for it from back in the day.

CrescentFang4606d ago

Though I agree on that, I don't feel that another FF should focus (and I think advertised) on a love story. The story was kind of confusing but I still love FFVIII (though I have to admit I haven't played it in years) Also Triple Triad was a great!

I loved that card game! I even remember going to certain region to manipulate the rules to my liking. It was deep, addictive, and understandable--unlike FFIX's mess that made no sense!

How about anything BUT the battle system of 8!
I'd take 9 or 10's battle system. Thank you.

ff9 was FF going back to its roots. Maybe they will do it again?

Stealth2k4606d ago (Edited 4606d ago )

I enjoyed the article

doesnt 13-2 do that at least somewhat?

Fully controllable party

Towns

side quests

non linearity

ff type zero also exchanges the turn base combat for a world map but still the elements are there.

If FF went back to its roots...

the same people would still be complaining

Rainstorm814606d ago (Edited 4606d ago )

We'll see if FFX does better (sales-wise) than FF13 or 13-2 then you will see squeenix go back to its roots for future FF games..

Money talks and BS walks

Neko6084606d ago

Thing is though X isn't even back to FF roots

Most of the game is pretty linear
No world map
Voice acting
Laughing scene

(I'm not complaining, FFX is a fantastic game)

Blaine4606d ago (Edited 4606d ago )

Agreed.

Also, (@Raiinstorm) you can't use the sales of a remake versus the sales of a new game for your argument. Obviously the people who are complaining for a return to the series' roots are long-time fans who've almost certainly played FFX already. I beat the game a few times myself, even poured about 150 hours into one playthrough to completely remodel the sphere-grid and completely max out my characters. Yet I won't be getting the remake.

I didn't get FFXIII either, but if FFXV were to be more like X, or even the older classics, then I would definitely buy it. So for your argument you'd have to compare FFXIII to the hypothetical FFXV I just mentioned.

PHOSADRA4606d ago

I prefer the:

Graphics of FF 13
Story of FF 3 (FF 6 in Japan)
World Styled like FF 12 (or FF 13 but more open)

But Honestly I can't decide between the FF 10 or FF 13 battle system.

FF 10 was my fav for a while until I played FF 13.
I like FF 13's system because it was fast paced yet required strategy through paradigm shifts.

Neko6084606d ago

Here's a battle system for you...

Paradigm system of XIII
Retort (swap out) and limit break system of X
Job system of.... V!

That'd be insane

Final Fantasy IV Pixel Remaster Review – An Epic Tale Of Pixelated Portrayals

Gary Green said: We’re finding ourselves in a similar position with the Pixel Remaster edition of Final Fantasy IV as we were with Final Fantasy III since, once again, we’ve received a slightly upscaled, more vibrant port of the original game when there’s already an expanded 3D remake available. As such, we’re playing a game which, even after its long-awaited release, still lives very much in the shadow of its remake.

If only they didn't screw ps4 owners over with a physical release. I'd have ran through this in a heartbeat.

The first one I played, it was the one that made me fall in love with JRPGs and is still my favorite to this day. A masterpiece

I’m Glad Atlus & SE Changed Dates To Avoid Competing With Shadow Of The Erdtree

Saad from eXputer: "I'm glad I don't have to choose between Square Enix, Atlus, and FromSoftware due to bad release windows and Shadow of the Erdtree."

H93d ago

More intelligent than guerilla games

raWfodog2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Atlus is releasing their game one week before Erdtree, SE is releasing theirs one week after.

HZD released four days before Zelda, HFW released one week before Elden Ring.

It seems to me like they are still releasing their games too close to Erdtree.

What a word vomit, rambling, turd of an article that simply states the obvious. Classic exputer.

Yuji Naka guilty of insider trading breaks silence to accuse Square Enix producer of lies

I find his comments around how Balan turned out to be very insightful as to why the game is trash. He basically apologises for its existence

solideagle16d ago

can you please give some of us who don't know anything about this, a summary of what happened?

Chocoburger16d ago

Balan was knowingly rushed out by S-E, it had an extremely short dev cycle and was fairly low budget.
Naka was the game's director until near the end when he was fired or perhaps he quit, I forgot.

carrotcakeag16d ago

@Chocoburger Yeah they did fire and replace him which caused him to unload a bunch of rants about the company. The project only existed because of Naka in the first place, he convinced Square to give him one shot at making a platformer. They gave him an opportunity but pulled the rug out before he was done for reasons not explained.
