This Changes Nothing: Looking Back At One Year Of The PlayStation Move

Ian Fisher writes: Sony’s first showing of the Move at E3 2009 may not have been that flashy but the technology was stellar compared to what the Wii offered and the potential seemed extremely promising. Despite whatever promise and internal might Sony has showed us with their internal endeavors, looking at the PlayStation Move a year after its September 15th, 2010 launch I can’t help but shake my head in complete disappointment since the device seems like a failure of sorts.

At least Move does exactly what Sony said it could, unlike Kinect which had so many features nerfed from the final version. Still waiting on milo and kate type interaction and immersion, I don't want to hear about next gen kinect. Move does need a killer app though. Where's that sorcery game?
Ps, I know the kinect bit was completely off topic, I was just venting.

Micro_Sony4638d ago (Edited 4638d ago )

Did you even read the article? The article does not even mention Kinect and the comparisons was with the Wii - with this said why are you mentioning Kinect.

"The device has the technology to be great yet Sony hasn’t pushed it at all." I have to agree with this because Move 1:1 is so dead on and Sony has the developers like Media Molecules and Sucker Punch who would make awesome games for a Move only games but they choose to implement it on games that are already controller established instead of showing us the true power of Move (Sorcery).

KMCROC4638d ago

kinect was mentioned 3 time in the article

Instead of being hyped as the next evolution of gaming on the PlayStation 3, the general hype around the Move seemed rather ho-hum compared to the mega event Microsoft was planning to do with the Kinect.

but why isn’t there a studio working on something beyond a new fitness game for an immediate retail release? SCE London has essentially been given the task of developing casual games, almost eerie similar to the UK based Rare handling core Kinect duties,

At this point it’s almost obvious that the Move hasn’t gained any ground in a year since publishers like EA hardly find ways to utilize the Move outside of shoehorning it in games like Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 and Sony themselves have failed to capitalize on their own technology to directly combat Microsoft’s Kinect

refocusedman4638d ago (Edited 4638d ago )

Honestly I dont see how kinect factors into this article. This isnt abt kinect vs move its abt the fact that move sucks because the support has been anemic. I was one of the duped consumers that purchased it shortly after launch and it has mostly collected dust since. Its really become a more of a paper weight than a gaming device. At least MS supports kinect with new software and not rehashed or tacked on support from pre-existing software. Its gotten to the pt that my girl friend refers to it as a dusty womans sex toy with colored balls....... need I say more!

gamingdroid4638d ago

Apart from what has been said, about Kinect vs Move this article IS NOT!

***Kinect which had so many features nerfed from the final version***

What features has been "nerfed" from Kinect? If anything, MS is set to deliver on many of those promises this Holiday season.

Ilikegames764638d ago

Update all the old shooter games like R1, R2, KZ2, etc. to support Move. I already bought those games even though I'm not a shooter fan. But I want them to support Move so that I could play them like Time Crisis.

Megaton4638d ago

I honestly sometimes forget the Move was ever released. Support from Sony is nearly non-existent. Only mediocre optional support for a handful of current titles. Nothing in terms of software dedicated solely to the Move.

Anon19744638d ago (Edited 4638d ago )

So there's almost 70 games right now that can use Move in the year since it launched, 20 are Move exclusive. How do you figure Sony isn't supporting Move again? Compare that to some other motion control devices on other consoles that have about half that - and then tell me Sony isn't supporting Move.

And wtf is with this article? Don't you have an editor? Someone to say "Really? Do you need a novel length article to get your point across?"

And I'm left scratching my head wondering what the point even is. What exactly did the author want to happen? Did he expect move to replace controllers altogether? I don't get it. It's an optional game accessory. It's a different way to play if you want. This guy's acting like it should have been something more. Does he really want Sony ramming Move down our throats at every opportunity like other motion devices I could mention?

Megaton4638d ago

Assuming even 3 of those 20 are worth playing, when's the last time one came out? They released a handful of really bad ones at launch, and then what? You say almost 70, but I can only think of Heavy Rain, SOCOM, Resistance and Killzone. All of which I'd rather play with a controller.

In-fact, I still haven't even played Heavy Rain because of the Move. My friend brought it over along with his PS3, and upon startup we were prompted to download a 2gb patch for Move support. Easy decision to switch to another game.

You'd also be foolish to assume I support Kinect simply because I don't think the Move is good. As bad as the Move is, and Sony's support for it, I'd still choose it over the Kinect if I were forced to own one. Luckily, I'm not, because frankly both of them have been just awful.

gamingdroid4638d ago (Edited 4638d ago )

Most of the support has been tacked on with Wii style controls. There has been a few titles here and there, but nothing must have.

The issue is Sony isn't making it a must have device instead they are pushing Sharpshooter.

Where is Richard Marks and his research?

Where is the exciting "new" things for PS Move?

Where is the integration into the dash beyond the half @ssed attempt or anything to make it essential?

What happened to Sorcery?

In fact, I can't think of anything for PS Move.

I even passed over buying the PS Move stuff at 50% off during the GameStop clearance. It wouldn't surprise me if more stores started clearing them out at all.

It's fine to have third party push your product, but you better d@mn well make sure they do otherwise you have to push it yourself, and right now Sony doesn't seem to care, they are too busy with PS Vita.

PS Move unfortunately was never really a selling point for the PS3 and I can't help, but feel from the initial presentation to now it was just there to stop MS, not a genuine interest in the product/technology.

TitanUp4638d ago

if ps3 didn't get hacked i would have gotten the move and kept my 150 ps3 games. sure was funny taking 2 garbage bags full of ps3 games to gamestop it was like i was throwing them away

zeksta4638d ago

Troll is just written all over that comment.

TitanUp4638d ago

i have been here since 2005 when this was called ps3today.com this is the first time i have been called a troll for a comment.the ps3 got hacked our personal information could have been stolen. i was concerned for the future of the ps network. just like with ps3 i didn't keep buying the 360 after the damn thing red ring on me i freaking fried the thing in a grill.

im a pc gamer i take care of the parts and i know it will last me and so fare steam has not been hacked.

Agent_hitman4638d ago (Edited 4638d ago )

As a PS3 fan, I would say that move is not that successful compare to kinects momentum, but we can't escape the reality, those peripherals has short term popularity, hardcore games and core games are more important.

Just look at BF3 and MW3!, whenever you hear about those games, does kinect pop up in your mind?, no!

Sony CEO says although AI "has been used for creation," it's "not a substitute for human creativity"

"AI is not a substitute for human creativity. We position it as a technology that supports creativity. Creativity resides in people. We will continue to contribute to people's creativity through technology," the CEO said.

...not yet but 100% within the next 10 years!

..Then Sony will use it like the drop of a hat. They're no different to the others.

isarai3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

They used to be 😞 sure it was always a business, and money's always the priority, but they used to have a very strong stance on supporting artists and creativity. "Dont f#@k with the artist" was a phrase they touted a few times back in the ps1-ps3 era, a philosophy carried over from their music branch PlayStation was created from. It's not COMPLETELY gone, but it's barely there compared to what it was back then, i just want them to return to that.

Eonjay3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

I am highly encouraged by their statement about human creativity. "Dont f#@k with the artist" is exactly what they are saying. But at the same time, I don't think people understand that Sony is a corporation. If they don't realize growth, they don't get to exist. When you say 'Sony', you are talking about a bunch of investors. To speak about them any other way is a illogical and incorrect. They haven't changed. They have been a group of investors since they became a public business.

isarai3d ago

Ugh, i really wish people would stop gambling people's livelihoods by turning a project/game into their political soapbox. Im all for statements and having your own opinion, but there's more people working on this than just druckman, ham fisting your political beliefs onto just seems inconsiderate for everyone elses job security when it can result in a failure due to people avoiding it for that reason.

I play games for escape, im so tired of nearly every AAA game blatantly dragging real world issues to shove in my face when I'm trying to take a break from it all. They don't even bother to be subtle about it, quite the opposite, it's blasted and force fed to you and it's just getting exhausting

Einhander19723d ago

People are taking a whole interview and cutting it down to clips that make him look bad and take what he actually was saying out of context. For example he also said things like this AI has "ethical issues we need to address"

-Foxtrot3d ago

@Einhander

Why defend him at this point?

It’s not taking things out of context, he said what he said.

Old ND would never talk about soulless AI taking over so many creative things they are well known for. The whole “ethical issues” is just a good PR spin people who push this crap fall back on to make their statements not seem as bad. So many AI lovers do this.

AI has no place is so many creative based things.

Einhander19723d ago

Well yeah, because everyone else is using it so they need to stay competitive. It's the same as paid online, they didn't want to go that route but their competition was making so much money they needed to add paid online just to keep up.

RaiderNation3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

AI will never replace humans in game development in terms of conceptualizing new games. Humans still need to come up with the ideas and what they want to implement. However much of the day to day menial coding could be AI driven to reduce production time and team size. I could also see AI being used for bug testing/optimization that could lead to better quality games at launch. I'm actually very optimistic about how AI can positively impact game development.

Good statement but hopefully this holds up

NotoriousWhiz3d ago

People that aren't software developers just don't understand the benefits of AI. People who's only exposure to A.I is the Terminator movie and other related sci fi films won't understand the benefits it provides.

It's not about replacing human labor. It's about making human labor easier.

Many years ago, I had laser eye surgery done. It was performed by a robot. The doctor took my measurements and calibrated the machine to make sure it would do what needed be done. And then the robot corrected my vision in 10 seconds.

15 years later and I still have 20/20 vision.

Eonjay3d ago

AI in and of itself is not a 'bad'. Money is bad. Money is evil, and corporations will do whatever they can to get more of it. They will find ways to implement AI to replace as may jobs as possible. This isn't even up for debate. It is the charge of the corporation to maximize returns for the investors. They have no choice. I'm a developer and I know that my job will absolutely be replaced. Therefore, I have decided to become an AI dev. AI has a lot of potential to help us solve problem on a scale most can't even imagine. The issue, as ever is that our monetary system only ever allows us to focus on greed and fiscal growth.

But I am a pragmatist. Perhaps an AI model can be built to help protect us from our most dangerous instincts and habits. And perhaps Congress can pass laws to protect us from people who would use AI to manipulate and control us (spoiler: they wont).

RaiderNation2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Progress is inevitable. Nobody driving cars today is complaining that the horse and buggy is no longer around. Yes, some jobs will be lost but guess what? With innovation comes new job opportunities. It's how the cycle of the job market works.

Sony Patents To Prevent You From In-Game Harassment By Reading Your Emotions

A new patent recently published by Sony wants to gather biometric data of gamers to track whether one is being harassed using AI tools.

Profchaos32d ago (Edited 32d ago )

I hope this is one of those patents that never comes to fruition.

I already dislike the fact you can pay a significant amount for a online service buy associated games and content on said service and get banned from that service over potentially a misunderstanding the bans are already handed out for flimsy reasons

I'd rather see money invested in a ban that simply removes the offensive players ability to communicate with unknown players allow them to continue party chats with friends but not with Joe blow on cod.

exputers32d ago

Agreed. Blizzard recently banned a college Overwatch 2 player who's dependent for saying "shit." Pretty harsh.

Profchaos31d ago (Edited 31d ago )

How rediculas really. You can't say a word that's allowed in most PG films and prime time TV but the game is based around killing the enemy team using guns, explosives etc.

It's just backwards.

just_looken31d ago

What your talking about is called block list

In 2006 a spaceship dropped of the playstation 3/xbox 360 i say that that generation was the last great gen with game functions/tech that has yet to comeback

Anyhow the playstation 3 if you block listed a id they could not talk to you in chatroom with either text or voice. But that was pre mind fucked 2018 when people were more human than sheep.

But hey gta 6 is coming out billion dollar budget without a single player custom character creator and without singeplayer coop off/online something saints row 1-3 had on the xbox 360.

Take my social security and bank account numbers too! Here’s a picture of my wife and our address.

phoenixwing32d ago

Cmon where's the pictures of your children. Don't hold out on them.

H932d ago

At this rate I feel Sony will eventually sell a room to play games in it where they can monitor your every breath

jambola31d ago

I genuinely get a bit worried sometimes when a friend says something that could be offensive In a party
Because I have no trouble believing some bans would happen when in a private party for saying something wrong

SegaSaturn66931d ago

I want them to censor erotic content by measuring my groin temperature so i dont get too distracted while playing black ops 2.

Popsicle31d ago

Terrible idea. Not only do I not consent to providing my biometric data, the potential for mishandling biometric data is almost a certainty. Positive stress and negative stress can produce similar changes in biometrics. Interpreting the precise emotion a person is feeling is not only invasive but could be easily misconstrued. I hope this never comes to fruition.

Sony Could Increase Your Game's Difficulty If It Sees You Complain About It

Sony has recently published a new patent that wants to dynamically handle the games' difficulty and gameplay based on the player's emotions.

jznrpg32d ago

This is something I might use. Sometimes I play some good games but they don’t have difficulty option and are a little too easy.

Profchaos32d ago

Souls games will be like that players struggling make it harder

PassNextquestion32d ago (Edited 32d ago )

I think if used correctly it could work well

jambola32d ago

cool idea
cool idea for horror games especially
the way it's explained here sounds like it could never be forced hopefully, so that's ok with me
